Replaced everything fairly easily. Watching ur vids along with others gave me the confidence to do it myself.

Not too expensive of a repair, you just gotta shop around for a reliable shop that takes into account the core of the old cv on your bill and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for labor. On my 2004 Subaru Outback, it cost me $450 to get both lower ball joints changed, as well as both my front cv axles. (Central Michigan location)
@CesarPerez-ck7ci8 жыл бұрын
here in Atlanta its $100-120 for a labor hour
@DeathsPit006 жыл бұрын
Yeah.... You still would've saved yourself at least $300 by doing it yourself. If you only pay for parts and do the labor yourself than sure, you'll come out the other side sweaty and dirty, but you'll still have saved yourself sometimes an assload of money in the process. I get that it's not for everyone though.

If anyone feels that where you attach the wishbone needs to be in a neutral (on the ground) position here's what you do: Just use you jack under the lower control arm to bring it up to neutral. That bolt is much easier to tighten this way rather than when it's on the ground, that is, for guys like me who don't have a lift. Great video!

@CaptainGSR I'm not one to disagree but I was under the impression that roller bearings such as this car has need to be preloaded in which case there really is no such thing as too tight. I will admit that I have never used a torque wrench to put one on and have never had a problem that I know of. I do appreciate your input however and I agree that proper torque is important but perhaps when it comes to axle nuts maybe not so much.

@trunk516 The axle didn't "snap" it just came apart when it was overextended when the lower ball joint broke. Nope, not a female driver either. The tire wear is most likely due to the alignment issues caused by the loose suspension parts and a lack of rotation. Thanks for your comment.

It's now 2o18. Last Saturday, my Accord CL7 (aka Acura TSX in the US) decided my lower ball joint had to go. My shoulder and neck isn't a big fan of lower ball joints no more, but I'm glad it happened in ~30km/h (which was hard enough of a hit, believe me) - This gave me a WHOLE new level of respect for maintanance to say the least.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@mjolson29 I'm a little confused by your terminology but if your trying to get the axle nut loose you might try removing the center cap from the wheel (if you don't have steal wheels), bolt the wheel back on, lower the car, and put the axle socket through the hole with a long breaker bar to break it loose. You don't need to remove the hub to get to the lower ball joint, in fact you don't want to remove it unless you are changing out the bearing. Good luck and keep me posted.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@mike186abl Try moving the wheel while it is up in the air side to side and up and down, if you feel anything loose look for the cause. Axles make noise on turns but that is normally while you are driving. Not sure what your issue is without getting a look for myself. Good luck.

@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@3782tk Struts aren't usually noisy like that, it's more common to hear ball joints make the noise you describe as they sound like rusty door hinges sometimes. You could verify this by putting your hand on the joint when it's making noise while someone "bounces" the car, if you feel the vibration coming from the joint in your hand it's probably the problem.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@eisman07 With the upper ball joints you just replace the entire upper control arm as it's not only easier but it also gives you new inner bushings which are nice to have in addition to a new ball joint. Thanks for the comment.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@adspof It's not something I do often but I have rebuilt a couple of automatic transmissions in the past and I hope to make some videos at some point in the future. If your going to do a repair you should consider a full rebuild as you will be there anyway and if one part is worn or broken the chances are good that other parts may soon follow. I don't have specific experience with Mercedes as you ask however.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@uGxNation Could be lots of things really, the best thing to do is see if you can produce the noise while the car is sitting still so that you can pin point where it's coming from. I would be checking the ball joints as well as the strut rod bushings and upper control arms. Good luck.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@Maxximum44 You should not have to worry about the fluid leaking out when doing this job but if some does it would be a negligible amount. If you do ever replace the fluid I recommend you use only Honda fluid as other fluids may cause a problem.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@jdmrcool13 The backing plate is held on by 3 screws behind the hub assembly, if it came loose you probably won't be able to reinstall it without removing the hub and if you were going to do that you would probably have to replace the bearing. You might consider just cutting the remainder off as you may need a new one anyway.

@TheAlex511 Not sure what kind of car your working on but if it looks like this style then try spinning the axle a little to line up differently and pry in a slightly different place, you may have to repeat this a couple of times before it comes out in some cases. Some axles require a special tool to remove them but most should pry out like in this video.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@Taxminia0311 Good point but in all the years I've been working as a mechanic I really haven't known many people to do what they should and I've known others that go too far in the other directions. @ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@opsvideo2008 On some vehicles that is true but on this one no. It is a good idea when replacing axles on cars that you are not familiar with to place a pan under the trans when you knock the axle loose just in case. You don't need to change the fluid so much as try and replace what was lost when you removed the axle. Thanks for the comment.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@blackhondaa37 No, it's not the wheel bearing just a dust shield that will come out if you tap it with a chisel, when your done you can put the ring back in as it does help to protect the bearing.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@TheAlex511 What you did will work if the cup of the inner joint is not worn too badly. There is no special tool to get the old shaft out but sometimes you need to work it a bit to pry it out, as I said in my other comment sometimes you can spin the joint just a little at a time and keep prying until you find the "magic spot" that will allow the axle to come out. It's not you they can just be a little difficult sometimes. I did a video on CV boots that might help you with the clamp.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@PVoyager It's perfectly fine to just replace the broken parts, inner tie rods can sometimes be tricky however as access to the part can sometimes be difficult. No matter what you will need to have the car aligned when you are done.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@TwIiAnOkWU I would check the timing both mechanical and ignition as well as for any slack in the belt or chain. You will want to address any issues with that engine noise before you start on the suspension as it could leave you stranded if it's serious.

Thanks eric. I never thought about using an air hammer for an old balljoint. I am a little hesitant about using all hammer on my new one though. Thanks for the pointers. This is great information.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@JohnzCarz If you are referring to when I hit the axle through the hub the reason is because the ball part of the hammer will actually fit into the hole in the hub whereas the flat end will not. Other than that use the flat end by all means.
@ericthecarguy13 жыл бұрын
@bequay113 You don't really need air tools to do this job but it helps. A breaker bar and a pipe extension are your best friends with stuff like this. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@IndividuallyWrapped You may not have a problem with axles, they make noise only when you turn for the most part. Since it sounds like you may have suffered some suspension damage at some point you may want to check those components for looseness. Also look for orange dust at the joints as this would indicate a worn or dried out joint that could cause a noise.

@DALE97DSM Suspension parts don't cause vibrations, if they are loose they make vibrations worse but as a rule they don't cause vibrations at speed. Based on your description I believe you have a bad tire our your tire balance is way off, my bets are on a tire though. It's not a bad idea to jack the front wheels up and check the suspension for looseness anyway as you don't want to end up like the car in this video.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@2455jbl240 Axles will pop out if they are not installed correctly, make sure the 'c' clip on the inner joint is not damaged and intact. Also make sure the axle is fully seated inside the transmission, there should be no gap when the joint is fully installed.

@ferrari1305 Vibrations at speed are either driveline or tire related. Check the tires for issues as well as the tire balance first, if that is good then check the inner CV joints as when they get loose they sometimes cause an intermittent vibration.

@patrickm993 Loose suspension parts don't cause vibrations, they can make them worse but they are NEVER the cause. In your case it's either a tire, tire balance, or inner CV joint problem. The only thing that can cause a vibration is something that is spinning, that is usually a good rule to go by. You would be surprised at how easy it is to throw a new weight off of a wheel so don't rule out tire balance, in fact that's where my money is.

Eric, Please keep the videos coming. I enjoy watching your videos and not always because I need to repair stuff, but because you're funny. Thanks much Eric.

This exact same thing happened to my accord. (Side note, its pretty scary when the ball joint snaps and you suddenly grind to halt in a now lopsided car!). Anyway, this video was useful as was your CV boot replacement video in dealing with the aftermath. Cheers!

@offdaheezy503 The clicking noise is probably an axle but the pulling could be a number of things from worn suspension parts (check the strut rod bushings) to an alignment issue. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check the tires either, try swapping the front tires side to side to see if it pulls in the other direction, if it does you know the pull is caused by a bad tire.

It is amazing how not much has changed in his video, yet everything changed. It is in the small things that make them different.

@c72zero Berings don't have to have play to make noise, in fact they usually don't when they make noise, it's when they get quiet they start to get loose sometimes. That said you should do what you can to mimic the noise by turning the wheel and listening to the suspension before you replace any parts. You might want to watch the Finding A Noise video I did to give you more details on that.

@SmopuiM Actually I think their ball joints are bolted to the lower control arm.

@kenman1717 Don't have a ball joint press, the reason I didn't use one. I haven't had issue with these cars hammering them in in the past but it's always nice to use the right tools whenever possible. Thanks for the comment.

@mrexecutive1 When you tighten the bolts with the car in the air the suspension is fully extended, when you lower the car and compress the suspension again the bushing will twist inside it's mount, think taking a dish rag and twisting it to wring it out. In short you are stressing the bushing by doing it this way and that could cause premature failure.
