What if my key will not allow the tumbler to rotate to the "on" position? That is whole reason I need to install a new one.

I did this myself months ago. You can also just shift to neutral and avoid disconnecting the battery altogether while avoiding it turning on. That's what I did.

Your model may be a different year than mine. I had to remove the lower part of the steering column cover because there are 2 screws holding the top ½ down. 1 short screw right behind the ignition switch/cylinder, and 1 long screw on the opposite side behind the turn signal lever/switch

That new key doesn't need programming? Is it automatic? Does this vehicle not have the security?

When I put the new one it it turns over but won’t stay crank just turns right back off

Not so easy to get the trim off. There is something holding the top piece on next to the cylinder, 2000 Silverado, that does not appear easy to get to. I removed two torx screws on the bottom and it is loose but I’m gonna have to figure out how to get the top piece off. Seems there should be a screw hole at the top or something to get to it. I have a photo but cannot upload it.

For a 1996 S10 manual 5-speed the ignition cylinder has a different Tumblr for it. It has a button you have to push . Do you specifically have to have the one with the button or the one with the button is only the manual and the automatic one will not work in the manual origin of the truck?
