How to replace Indian Hawthorn w Distylium -one tough shrub!

Some shrubs, like Indian Hawthorns get leaf spot fungus, and unless treated, they will eventually die. See how I replaced my dead shrubs with the best evergreen shrubs that few people know about, Distylium. I’ve planted two varieties by First Editions called Coppertone and Cinnamon Girl and another brand new variety from Southern Living called Cast In Bronze Distylium. These evergreen shrubs are in the Witch Hazel family, and bloom tiny burgundy flowers in late winter. They are good in USDA Hardiness zones 7-9 and are disease and pest resistant, drought tolerant, and also tolerate moist soils.

This is exactly what I’m planning on replacing my Indian Hawthorns with. Mine have leaf spot fungus and it made me so upset because they were beautiful when they were healthy. I’m excited for a change now though and think this is the perfect fit.

Mine are planted on the east side of my house. I planted 5 two years ago. One is beautiful. It gets a bit of shade under a dwarf magnolia, One has died no matter how much I took care of it. The other 3 aren’t doing very well. I’m not sure if it’s the sun/heat or a disease.

What did you pour into the hole before planting?

That was pine bark soil conditioner to help with drainage.
