NGK’s position on anti-seize NGK spark plugs are manufactured with a trivalent plating. The spark plugs display a silver or chrome finish on the threads. The trivalent plating reduces corrosion resistance from moisture and chemicals. The trivalent coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs should be installed DRY, WITHOUT anti-seize. NGK reports that tech support personnel have received a number of calls from installers who have over-tightened spark plugs because of the use of anti-seize. Anti-seize is a lubricant and affects torque values by up to 20 percent. If you use anti-seize against NGK recommendations, you MUST decrease the set torque on your torque wrench by that amount or risk breaking the spark plug, distorting the shell, or damaging cylinder head spark plug threads.

I'm nearly 70 and I've been changing spark plugs on cars from the 60's to today. Never, have I ever, had to use a breaker bar to remove a plug. A socket, a ratchet with an extension is all I have ever needed.
@eds65692 жыл бұрын
I just typically use whatever works to remove it, I may have used a breaker simply because it was easiest to pull out of my junk. Just because he used a breaker bar doesn't mean he had to nor is it the wrong way if it worked. I also always went by feel on torquing it but that's just me being lazy and most repairs should be torqued to spec if ya wanna do it right and avoid potential problems.

Using a power tool to screw your plugs in is a bad idea, FIRST do it by hand so you know it's aligned properly and won't strip the threads!

Ngk specifies no compound on the threads. The shiny chrome like threads contain a single use anti seize. Do not add more.

This was very helpful, thank you. Didn’t have the fancy spark plug socket with the rubber gripper washer, but did have a deep socket and a ratchet extender that made it easy to unthread and rethread. Used a needlenose pliers to pluck the unscrewed plug out of the hole and get the new plug started - no drama whatsoever. No need to use power - the threads turn easily in both directions once broken free or started, and you want to manually feel the progress of anything being screwed into an expensive and fragile aluminum part like this.
@TheWrecker934 жыл бұрын
If you didn't have the spark plug socket you can use a short length of rubber hose to start the plugs when installing them. If you push the plug into the hose enough to grip but easy to pull off once the plug is started. Used it a few times when no socket was available.

At 3:20 you said that those bolts on top need very very little torque. How many lbs of torque? Please
@clarencesmith95805 жыл бұрын
Educated elbow pounds around 5 for the metal and the plastic do-dads around 2. I have been twisting wrenches for over 45 years in my "back yard" and it's something that you learn by doing. Those 8mm bolts I would use if it fit a 8mm deep 1/4" socket and a stubby 1/4" ratchet and only tighten them just past hand-twist tight and the same for the plastic top keepers.
@foxlake026 жыл бұрын
The spark plug socket also works on the plastic nuts that screw onto the smaller screws too.
