My local Mazda dealer wanted $350 to change out the 4 spark plugs. I feel like I may spend $60 at most including the torque wrench and do this in 15 minutes after watching your video. I watched a half dozen or so about this topic and this was by far the best and gave me the most confidence. I'll let you know how it comes out.

One pointer to add ... if you have compressed air, blow the dust & debris from the cavity where the plugs are located after removing coils while plugs are still in place to minimize the debris and dust from entering the cylinder while removing and installing plugs.

I replaced spark plugs in our 2008 Mazda 3 today and this video was super helpful and very easy to follow. Probably the best step-by-step car video guide that I ever watched. Thank you very much! I didn't use a torque wrench as I didn't have one but the new plugs were pretty snug and tight and I was careful not to overtighten them. On a side note, I noticed quite a bit of dust, sand and other debris so I vacuumed the area before removing the coil packs but was careful while doing so. Thank you!

I was reluctant to get a torque wrench where the torque to tighten the plug is at the very low end of the wrench. I did a little digging, and a chart told me to tighten a quarter turn as a rule of thumb for plugs this size. (I assume this means a quarter turn past hand tight.)
@MorrisDugan
@MorrisDugan Жыл бұрын
UPDATE - I changed the plugs a couple of days ago. The plugs in there must have been the originals - they are marked "Ford" and 6M8G-12405-BB (Mazda #) and ILTR 5A-13G (NGK #), which corresponds to the NGK "Laser Iridium" plugs. There's no gasket on the the old plugs or the replacements. It's set up in the car to be almost impossible to cross-thread them. I found it impossible to tighten 1/4 turn, but I probably tightened more than 1/8. After I was done, and had a successful test drive, I took another look at the little boxes that held the new plugs, and noticed that it had a little graphic showing that you tighten them 1/16 turn! Now I'm thinking I should loosen the plugs and try to be precise about tightening 1/16 turn.

🛠 🏆 5-star DIY video. This is how you make a great, useful, and easy-to-follow car maintenance video: tripod-mounted camera, no distracting background music, and methodical explanation every step of the way. When I hear shops charging $200-300 for a 4-plug swap on the Mazda3 2.3 engine I have to laugh. This is not a hard maintenance item if you follow this video. The only thing I would add is that I always blow out the spark plug hole before removing the spark plug. You don't want grit, sand, or other debris to fall down into the hole once the spark plug is removed.

When the plugs are iridium, I would not recommend gapping the plugs as the electrode tip is so small and fine that you can chip pieces from the tip. I know this from experience. I was told to never gap iridium plugs by a mechanic friend. Most come pre-gapped already, just find the ones that fit the recommended gap spec for your car. My Mazda 3 has a gap recommendation of 0.05 inches and the Autolite iridium plugs I bought came pre-gapped at 0.050. Makes the installation hassle free.

If you have a code scanner I would see what codes the engine is throwing. If you don’t they are invaluable tools for car owners and usually pay for themselves after the first use. The codes it shows will point you in the right direction.

@5MinuteFixit

It’s not a major problem, but that seal does help prevent debris from going down the tube and resting on the spark plug. The next time the plugs are changed the debris can fall into the combustion chamber.

You can do it, ft-lbs is a unit of torque (basically how much you should tighten) the spark plug. Another good rule of thumb if you don’t want to over tighten is to hand tighten it without the wrench on until it seats then put the wrench on the extension and turn it 1/2 turn more. Hopefully this helps. The idea is that you want it tight but do not force it. Thank you for watching and please consider giving the video a thumbs up if you haven’t already! Thank you!

rule do thumb : I always '' COPPER SLIP '' anything that has a thread. Easy removal.
@MorrisDugan
@MorrisDugan Жыл бұрын
Anti-seize affects the torquing, so you're talking about a can of worms. NGK recommends not using anything. That also makes me nervous, because the threads are in there a long time between changes, and could get stuck. I'm doing the change at just under 70,000, hoping that the plugs won't be stuck when I try to remove them.

Dude! Can’t wait to try do this on my Mazda following your video. Just taking my car in for an alignment and they quoted me at 330 bleeping dollars to replace spark plugs. I don’t even know if that included the coils. I’m loving doing maintenance on my car especially for stuff like this. Not all heroes wear capes muh man! 🦸‍♂️ I’m at 105k. Hopefully I’m okay with waiting so long, they said I should have replaced them at 75k. How do you know if you need to replace the coils? If you are changing your plugs at 100k, then I’m sure I’m fine too to just change the plugs. Thanks for the great video that’s so clear.
