Very helpful. I'm relatively new to gaming, but not new to taking things apart. Instead of forking out a fortune for one of the latest boxes and games as an introduction for a beginner, I went for a quite cheap second hand XBox One console with games bundle. I also knew I got an optical drive with it, so it's one less HDMI being used. All was going fine for a few weeks until the optical drive started to fail. I bought a replacement - not that expensive for what it does - followed your instructions, and now it's all working fine again.

take a dry erase marker and save yourself 20 minutes of confusion and label the old and new drives , youll be able to put dry erase marker on the pcb too itll be fine , just a helpful comment for anyone whos not sure :)

So I'm followed the video to the T, and when i put everything back together i now have no power going to the disc driver. Did i fry the pcb while soldering? Or did i not put the ribbons in far enough, or could i just have a bad "new" drive?

These units are RoHS compliant as required by current laws. This means zero lead in the solder. This is why it melts at a hotter temp. The industry standard for lead solder for electronics is 63-27. It is 63% lead and 27% tin. The tin reduces the melting temp of the solder.

Thanks was able to fix mine yesterday, just a note, since I added too much solder I had to add electrical tape to the drive cover since it was grounding out and not working when I put it together.

has 2 be the same model number as ur old drive as of the dvd drive has that model number on the board if u put the wrong dvd drive in the console with a different model number wont update the console with get a error msg if you buy the same model number as ur consoles then yes it will work no soldiering ive done it 2 my familys broken xbox 1s people think can just buy any drive plug an play

Flux makes the heat transfer better and won’t take as long , I’m using a 30watt (non adjustable heat) soldering iron I got from Walmart and it lifted in a few seconds . I got the Flux from Home Depot (bernzomatic is the brand)

i believe that flux is for copper pipes i wouldn't use that on electronics as it is stronger and can eat the traces on the board, get mg rosin flux its non corrosive , but use in a well ventilated area as it has strong fumes

You can add some low melt solder to each pad and then heat up the pads, it will melt much easier. The same thing i use when doing repairs replacing the 3DS charging port

@TinkerMods Microsoft sent me a replacement, but it constantly runs the motor that brings the disk in. Is it possible to just take the eye out of the new one and put it in the old one? My old one just doesn’t read discs. The new one with play games, but when a disk is in it, it runs the motor.

Yes, the motherboards and the disc drive board are what people call "married" I've had to do this same method on my old xbox 360 and my xbox ones disc drive is starting to fail, so im gonna replace it

The lasers get weaker over time. So most likely the cd drive. Not the board.

@RogerWilco99 yes I repaired CD players in the 80s lots of them. Sometimes the cd drive motor goes bad. Will not play tracks on the outer side of cd but inside tracks are ok that’s the drive motor.

Very good information except for the method of de-soldering the solder joint. Heat transfer is almost impossible unless you add a bit of solder to the soldering gun first. The solder would likely not need as much heat to liquify is using solder on the tip of the solder gun.

You can still play b-ray but as soon as your Xbox updates it will brick because the boards don't match. Luckily I kept my old drive - swapped it back in and Xbox completed update. Replacing the board as shown here is necessary if you don't want to keep having problems every time you take an update.

I think I finally got close, the best I came up with is it's an "Xbox One Blu Ray Drive Spindle Motor Cable". I haven't found one for sale without having to buy the actual spindle motor with it but for anyone else who screwed up like I did, that's what I/we need

so... i was able to do the board swap with ZERO SOLDERING. i was able to remove the small rubber band and pulley off of the motor shaft very easily, along with the 2 small screws that hold the motor in, and it came out with the board... it was much quicker and easier than the desolder and resolder job.

Mine wouldn't take in disk the eject noise would change if I pushed the disk half way in from no disk to disk ejecting noise when pressing the eject button. So I got another drive unplugged HDD put different disk drive in just to see if I had a working board, great took in disk and everything worked. So I thought ok has to be the motor chip, I swap it over, try again still the same. At this point I thought ok the motor controller chip is good, board good, laser good so I'll transplant the ID chip from one board to another.... Very hard to do but anyway with patience I did it... Pop drive back in and I'm back to square one but I now know it's a glitch with that ID chip and everything to do with the drive has been swapped. At that point I thought mmmm I haven't been on the Xbox in quite a while possibly a year so I update the console while updating I insert a disk and it takes it. So I can only think if you don't go online to update Microsoft nuke your disk drive. As crazy as that sounds it's the only logical thing I can think of. Been using drive last few days and it hasn't missed a beat. So make you sure you update your console before even thinking about replacing disk drive...

Not worth it. They don't sell new replacements for these. You still have to replace them with a used drive and there's no guarantee because one doesn't know how many hours of use is on the donor drive. If there are already many ways and videos of repairing or replacing BD drives on an Xbox one, that's already a sign that the weakest link of the Xbox one is the BD drive and the chances of getting another defective one is great. Honestly if one is finding a lot of issues with consoles, become a PC gamer, plenty of new replacements and mods for that rather than monkeying with used components in a console. Great video tutorial, but a waste of time according to many I.T. techs I've spoken with.

This is precisely the reason I became a PC gamer as well. I have an Xbox One that I only use for buying used last gen games which are much cheaper than what it costs on Steam, but for everything else, I buy it on PC. The performance is also much better than a console and the experience is nearly identical since I use an Xbox Core controller for gaming and can stream locally and remotely over Steam Link.
