Any DIY guys who replaced the parking brake shoes on one of these, you have amazing determination. I am a wiz at brake shoes and I wont do another set on these without taking off and replacing the hubs. the hubs are in the way making it ridiculous

great video, however I did notice you edited out the 10-15 times the retaining spring falls off of the nail before you can get the retaining clip in place and success is achieved.

I just finished replacing the rear rotors and pads on my 2009 Camry and while I was in there, I serviced the parking brakes on both sides. Here's a little tip for at least the Camry (I'm not sure of other Toyota models). If you notice where the nail pins attach to the shoes, the "hole" is actually an open ended slot. I've found that if you assemble and lock the 2 caps and the spring onto the nail first, you can compress it then slide it onto the shoe into the nail slot at one time. Just be sure to position the hook on the base cap into its associated hole in the shoe frame so it locks in. No need to struggle trying to hold everything together and then twist on the end-cap from the small space between the hub and the shoe. It works for both the straight and the curved nail as well. Hope this helps.

The old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words" certainly does apply here. I was trying to reinstall the e-brake assy and after 2 hours, cussed it and left it laying on the concrete and popped a beer. Looked this video up on you tube and saw where I was trying to install the retaining spring rod into the little hole instead of the slot. I had it backwards. Thanks for the video.

Great video. The best I’ve seen on this topic. It’s never this easy though. Well maybe for a mechanic it is. I’m just a DIYer and I went through probably 50 times where the springs popped out while trying to install them and probably let out even more choice words. I’ll just leave it at that.

[From the UK, June 2022] This must be the best video out there, for this! It will help for the Landcruiser Prado. Those two sprung pins - are also meant to be accessible via the two large holes in the hub assembly. But - that probably makes more sense for the 'special' tool - however you can adapt a very wide flat screwdriver, & cut a nick into its centre.

I found a tip that really helped me. The round keeper springs on each side (with the inner and outer spring cap) are in a slot on the shoe with a tab in a hole to hold it. Putting this spring back in is frustrating. The tip -> get a pick (a small tool with a sharp end) that is bent over 90 degrees. Before putting the new shoe in, assemble the spring and its caps on the nail. Position and use the large hole in the hub so that you can grab the back side of the spring assembly and compress it by pulling. You can then slide the shoe into place as the nail and spring assembly slide along the slot.

Thanks, i'm a 65 yr. old female and can now go into Carmax and speak with them knowledgeably about the problem their mechanic created in my car when he over-tightened the e-brake and created a bad vibration in my steering wheel. He either broke something or maybe the shoes need to be replaced and he was trying to do the minimal repair until my warranty expires in 16 days! My Venza is not leaving their shop until there is zero vibration, the way it was when I took it in.

Can't see any other comment about this, so hopefully it is useful. At 3:40 when the main hub is stuck on, rather than pulling and hitting with a large hammer to break the seal, there are 2 threaded screw holes in the hub itself. Simply find a couple of small bolts that fit, use a spanner to screw them in, and they act as a puller, and the hub simply pops off. I experienced a lot of effort and frustration before I realized what they were there for.

Just did this today, was looking for adjuster settings, as the gen 4 isn't self-adjusting. Did want to say, its really easy just to pull the hub off, its only 4 bolts and makes life that much easier, and you can inspect it at the same time. Also those twist spring caps, don't bother with pliers, the spring is weak, its only there to hold it roughly in place, after the first one, I realised this, and then did the other 3 by hand.

One thing I didn't see you mention which is one of the most important parts of servicing the brakes is to clean the caliper pins (and where they insert into) and lubricate with the proper brake silicone. I do mine twice a year, usually when I change from winter tires to summer tires. They always seem to need attention.

This is one of the most frustrating jobs to do. Not sure if a lift makes it easier but I didn't have access to one. Would be nice if you added removal of the horse shoe clamp, but I found that in another video. The parking brake is essential to resetting the fuel trims (idle re-learn) on these cars in the event that the battery had to be completely disconnected - you need a parking brake that can hold the car while in drive for that procedure. Also would've liked to have seen the self-adjust procedure after the shoes are replaced and wound down. I was told to put the car in reverse and apply the parking brake? I found using a zero-taper, short needle nose pliers spread to the wide notches of the spring retainer for the nails worked best - aiming it through the access holes of the hub with one finger on the back of the nail to keep it straight and long, then turn the pliers til the retainer locks on - like you did at the end. Thanks for the tips in the video!

if take the wheel hub off first (4x14mm bolts), the whole mounting plate for the parking brake comes off too (will be hanging on the brake cable). Now taking the parking brake mechanism apart and putting it back together is going to be about 1 million time easier. I just did this job a few hours ago. The hub has a special big hole to get access to every bolt.

Wouldn't it be so much easier to remove the hub assembly, since all that is needed is to remove the 4 bolts, so that there could be a clear access to the parking brake shoes and all its hardware? Btw, can the same hub assembly that is removed be reinstalled, or once it's removed, is a new one required? Thank you!

When I say "worn down" I really just mean that it no longer holds the car in place on an incline if in neutral., I haven't taken it apart yet to see if it is actually worn completely out I guess since they can automatically adjust for wear, this probably means I need to do the full boot replacement instead of just tightening it with the adjustment wheel.
@tev2229
@tev2229 6 жыл бұрын
Take it apart Nick and check the pads for wear. Make sure you use the adjuster to loosen so you can pull the disc off. I pulled the disc of without disengaging. I thought it was warn enough that it would not matter. I ended up pulling the shoes and hardware off with the disc. Thankfully 1A Auto made this video so I was able to see how it went back together!

Depends if you are trying to just replace the parking brake hardware and shoe ? And also depends on the condition of the rim and how rusted and dirty it is it could lead to other parts being broken or worn out or seized alot of different situations and outcomes .Why would you want to work with the hub off to replace the parking brake and hardware like intended on this video?
@prfinest07

@@mobmob5944 I agree. I was ready to replace the parking brakes on my 05 scion tc, and discovered the hub plate assembly was so rusted that the pins that hold the shoes were loose inside the rotor. I could have imagined what if the pins was still intact, started removing the hardware, and then had to deal with the rusted plate that could of been a headache.
