The Motor in my power window went out, and this guide helped me get the door panels off. Thanks! One problem I'm having is re-stringing the wire that connects the motor to the tops of the tracks and then down to the clamps that the glass sits in. Each time I try, there is too much slack and the window won't raise or lower correctly.

I know that this video is for 99 and newer, but for those who have a silverado 89-96, when changing the regulator on those models, be very carefull of the heavy duty spring that is coiled to help the regulator move up and down. Be sure to use a c-clamp or something to make sure that spring does not work itself loose when drilling the rivets that hold the motor and reg. together. I realized this once that spring narrowly screwed up my hand.

If the motor has gone bad you should be able to replace just the motor. You could try to test the power going to the window motor with a test light to see if it's getting power to it when the switch is pressed. Hope this helps you out.

great vid. this is very helpfull. i work at a chev dealer. i have done manual regulators on these years, and i do alot of door handles so i know how everything comes apart. i own an '03 and think i have to do the pass side one on it. it goes really slow up and down, kind of binds in the middle, but it goes fast near the top or near the bottom.

It is going to be either the window regulator or the switch. It could also be an issue with the power or ground wire to the motor. Opening up the door and checking it out will be the best bet at this point.

There are people that sell aftermarket install kits for these vehicles. Something like that will require some extensive wiring and installing of switches as well as the relay system.

@bobsyphrit You have the right idea, take the door panel off and investigate. The most common problem is the window regulator breaking but in the cold the mounts to the window could have broken off.

yes you can but normally that is an extra step that most don't want to have to go through. We sell the window regulators through our website with the motor already installed.

@1commuterguy If your motor goes bad your window will just stop working, it may move up and down slow before it stops. If your reg goes bad you will hear squeking and general friction noises from your door while the motor is still working. Also an indicator that you reg is worn is if you window can move excessively by hand. The Astro has a differnt style reg. This video provides an outline it is not a good representaion. Check out our camry regulator vid to see a scissor style.

@12beastman You should be able to push the window into the up position from inside of the door with your hand. then you can use the painters tape to hold it in the up position, so that you can remove it from the window regulator. Hope this helps you out.

Your best bet would be to see if you are getting power to the lock and the window motor from the master switch. If you are not getting anything you might want to check for a frayed wire and then test the switch.

On the 2000 it looks like the motor and regulator are one unit. If none of the windows work you may want to test the power going to the window switch. to see if there's power going to it. You may also want to check the fuses to see if they're okay and not blown. Hope this helps you out.

If the cables are broke and have the glass jambed into place, you may need to cut the cable so that you can lower the glass, before you replace the window regulator with a new one.

@tinhi1 A good mech can do it in less than 1 so I'd say a good quote is 1.5 or 2 to stretch it. On the other side though if you proposed to the mechanic that you are buying the part then they may tack on extra because they normally make money on parts and they do need to make money.

Ask him if he tested it with an ohm meter and if he recommends that you replace the relay. Usually a new relay isn't a whole lot of money and should fix the issue, if that's what's causing it.

Unfortunately the window regulator most likely is getting hung up on the wire. The best bet would be to remove the door panel and see inside to get a better idea of what is going on.

@ derek tucker11 the power windows on my 99 silverado roll down fine but roll up slow or sometimes it will just stop half way up, what is the problem? HI Derek, Thank you for watching our auto repair videos on KZbin. The window motor might be getting tired on that window. What you could try to do is, you could take the door panel off and put some white lithium grease on the window regulator track. Another trick to help speed up a worn window motor is to spray a little silicone on the weatherstrip seals that surround the window. I have a 99 Chevy Silverado pickup passenger window does not operate very well slow and stopped working on the down position I took the regulator out and motor greased and took the motor apart and oiled it up with WD 40 and cable lubricant works really good now.

You may want to test the power going from the switch to the window motor. If it works from the opposite side of the vehicle, it may be a bad switch. It could be just broke in the up position. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

@AvidDesigner Same thing happend to me. You have to take the motor off the track and then the circular part that holds all the slack needs to be popped off so you can run some of the wire around it and then put it back in place and secure it with the motor

It looks like one of the wire strands on the cable broke on the cable closest to the door handle (possibly the pull down cable). Could the loose strand be binding up in the regulator?

What if my window goes up and down and once is is close to all the way up it makes a clicking noise? The window still has a quarter of an inch to go and I have to put my hands on both sides of the window to push it up the rest of the way. Once I close the door it falls back down that quarter inch.
