great tutorial! ** I've always heard that Lb/f?? as "foot pounds" which upon thinking about it doesn't seem right, but that's what it is.... After reading the other comments and horror story, I will for sure look up in the book and do my own due diligence. update: not sure what the "horror story" cause was, but the Haynes book book showed 59 foot pounds (ft/lb?) fwiw **(edit-- note: this job was completed only with the encouragement and help from this video, and also the book, Thank you Mr. Peter Finn! some observations: the later model hub with the ABS tone ring absolutely did not fit the 1994 DX, and the correct replacement came with a plastic cap that had to be removed. Added bearing grease per Peter's other video, since the ball bearings had only a light coat, were showing and not well packed from the factory)

Yes, please check by the book.

A wheel bearing has gone on my Corolla but my garage said it might be quicker and easier to change the whole hub assembly rather than just the bearing. I don't mind as long as it's fixed.

According to the Haynes manual, the torque required for the hub bolts is 80 N-m/59 ft-lb, not 100/75 as you demonstrate.
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor9 жыл бұрын
clinke2007 Thanks, also 80 N-m/59 ft-lb is Ok.

Peter, thanks for this vido guide. I have a question - what is the torque spec for big central nut, if you want reuse the hub and replace only bearing? I cannot find this, as this procedure is stated as too special for DIY mechanics. Thanks.

Peter I love your vids I drive a 1994 Toyota Celica and this is literally the exact same setup. I have a question though when you remove the rear wheel bearing assembly do you need to remove the the O-ring and lube it and generally clean the inside area where the axle is?
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor9 жыл бұрын
goldiegoo You could only add bearing grease to rear bearing.
@divineavengers9 жыл бұрын
Peter Finn Thank you! The Chilton Repair Manual shows an O-Ring but there isn't one on my car - you are exactly right!

Peter, big thanks for video.. I'll try to put out my rear left bearing this afternoon.. But not sure whether it is bearing which is making more noise when I turn right (and most of the weight stress to the left side) or it is just brake shoes which is moving? Somebody can help, pls? Fyi : brake shoes already changed.
@BabyxBandit Жыл бұрын
I am alil Kate to the party but to check if your bearing is faulty: While the wheel is on and still tightened up put your hands at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try pushing and pulling to shake the wheel, if it moves, that means it is a faulty wheel bearing.

@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor8 жыл бұрын
+Ernest Makhetha Yes, hooo sound is from tires or bearings. Replace both and Hooo is away. :-)

Hello! Is it even necessary to put grease in the wheel bearing? It's because the new wheel bearing already brings a little grease! How number is the key to loosen and separate the bearing from the hub? I'm not talking about the four 14mm screws, I'm talking about the only screw. Thank you and sorry for my bad English.

I have a huge question, I used your video when I changed the rear passenger side. I have tried to remove the rear left side. I have worked on it for 3 days now. Problem is I can not get the dust cover to come off of the bearing. so How do I do it. I have soaked it . I have driven backwards (someone told me to do that because the break is stuck ) ( it stops my car) HELP how do I get the dust (rust) cover off so I can change my wheel bearing. When the wheel turns it sounds like it is uneven and rubbing on 1 side. I have soaked it with a very expensive spray. THANK YOU. HELP PLEASE

10:22 100Nm ????? Typical maximum torque rating for class 10.9 bolt is ~70Nm (50Nm w/ lube). Mine all had to be drilled out to remove unfortunately. I was going to buy new OEM bolts, but Toyota wants $6 each! I went to the hardware store and obtained 10.9 Class bolts of the same type. Toyota's bolt markings are proprietary, so I can only assume they're class 10.9. Anyway, 100Nm is impossible and I've snapped 2 heads off and ruined the threads in one of the holes. I don't know what to do now, because you cannot buy the axle carrier assembly anywhere, except maybe from Toyota. The only thing left I believe I could do is to buy longer bolts and add nuts on the other side (1 bolt enters the axle carrier and cannot receive a nut). I looked up the torque sheet before, and I thought it said 59 ft/lbs, but I figured you knew best. With anti-seize I should have really used 50 Nm. Arrgh:(
@MrZman3117 жыл бұрын
icawn you realize NM and ft/lbs are two different measurements? 100nm isnot even close to 100 ft/lbs. in/lbs and NM are very close.
@icawn7 жыл бұрын
Yes there was no confusion between Nm and ft/lbs. 100Nm was too much for the bolts I obtained. It may have been fine for Toyota oem bolts, but not the class 10.9 I obtained from the hardware store. The heads were turning, without the rear turning, until snapping. I ended up using 80Nm, which felt like a more appropriate limit. I used longer bolts, to add nuts and lock washers on the opposing side. So far still tight after 150 miles.
