I changed my screen successfully just following this AWESOME video. Some immediate suggestions around details not mentioned in the video: (1) at 3:10, under those 2 screws (one on each side) there are some little pieces of metal. Remember how they're positioned and put them back. The ridge that fits into a slit in the flame helps remembering. (2) The hinges on the old and new screen are hard to turn at 90'. You don't realize when taking out the old screen because the whole screen acts as a lever, but to turn on the new screen you can use some pliers, just be careful not to push on the new screen, that would be the worst :-)

I agree with RobAnthonyDire's comment below. This is one of the best instructional videos that I have come across. I have a working Macbook now. Thank you very much.

I've never worked on computers before but the cost of having Apple or a computer repair service replace the display wasn't cost effective, so I was glad for this video. It's definitely a bit meticulous for anyone who hasn't worked on computers before (especially dealing with tiny screws) but it worked out fine. Thank you!
@ChrisZwolinski3 жыл бұрын
That's probably the one thing that "regular PCs" have going for them. They might have some small torx or phillips screws to deal with, but I never had to buy a pentalope driver before working on macs. They also seem to be much easier to work on in general, IMHO. Maybe I just need more practice, or less people breaking them would help too.

Dynamite video!! Thank you so much!! I just replaced my screen. You saved me so much money! Articulate explanations, images were clear. Well edited. This was the best of the two other videos on the same subject I saw. My only suggestion is there is one part that needs more clarity. There are actually 2 clamp screws on each side of the screen. So a total of 8 screws that have to be removed. You took the right one out and it looks like the left one is missing. The clamp is not mentioned. I can see the holes where it goes. This made it confusing for me because I almost busted my screen trying to take it off, thinking I didn't have another clamp screw to remove. But overall, bravo and thanks for keeping us informed.

Fantastic video. We have 2 older macbook pros, one that works far better than the other, but of course, the one not working well has a much better display (it was replaced only a year ago). I used this video to swap the 2 displays and was successful with both :) We will repurpose the one macbook that's on it's way out, but now the other has a much better display and is still very reliable. Hi, I have a MBP 15 A1398 mid 2014, screen have some issue, may I know which year/models I should be looking for. I am looking in ebay for a used screen. Thanks in advance
@BartechTV3 жыл бұрын
- Mid 2012 / early 2013 share the same screen - Late 2013 / mid 2014 share the same screen - 2015 model has its own screen. So, you should look for a late 2013 or mid 2014 screen. Replacement screens are a lot more expensive now than when I made this video. Instead of looking for a used screen, you could try looking for a liquid damaged laptop, since they're often cheaper than just the screen and usually it's just the motherboard that's fried while the screen still works.

@BartechTV3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, In your 2014 MacBook Pro 15" you can use a screen assembly from a Late 2013 or Mid 2014 model. The screen assembly from the 2015 MacBook Pro 15" models isn't compatible, unfortunately. The Late 2012 and Early 2013 use the same screen. The Late 2013 and Mid 2014 use the same screen. The Mid 2015 screen is unique and isn't compatible with previous models.

I was given a MBP from my brother in law last week who moved to the Pixelbook. His MBP is an early 2013 15" with Retina display. 16GB ram, Core i7 2.8Ghz, and a 750GB SSD. The laptop was either dropped or something since the bottom right corner of the display is out and is getting worse. The entire bottom of the display is out now and growing. My question is, the laptop seems to run very well and I am new to Macs. Love this one so far but wondering if it is worth the money to replace the display on it? I have priced them out and found a couple good ones in the $300 range. I work on electronics daily and repair cellphones so I am confident in my skill in doing it myself. So is it worth it?
@BartechTV6 жыл бұрын
An early 2013 15" with the specs you listed is still a very fast and capable machine, and still has a resale value of $900 or thereabouts, so I'd say it's definitely worth spending $300 on a new display.

is it possible to replace just the cable? as my screen works but there's a faulty connection somewhere
@BartechTV6 жыл бұрын
The cable is very difficult to replace. The display with lvds cable and antenna cables is an integrated part and the glass is glued to the screen. You would have to remove the glass, using a heat gun, which is very difficult to do without it breaking, unscrew the LCD, swap the LCD cables and reroute the new cable through the frame, then re-attach the glass with some adhesive. Louis Rossman made a very good video on replacing the glass which would be a good starting point if you want to attempt cable replacement.
@johnsnook60846 жыл бұрын
Bartech TV thanks for your response but I’ve since seen that it’s possible on the MacBook retina without removing the glass, it wasn’t possible on previous models as you described. The black plastic strip that runs along the bottom of the screen that covers the hinges attached to the screen slides off when the display section is removed and underneath you can gain access. Check out the video on you tube about tightening the hinges.

Hi. My A1398 has a black screen, and have tried all the software attempts to fix. Nothing. Anyone know if I can try to replace the CABLES to the screen first, (see if that works?) before I pay out for a whole screen? Is it poss to try replacing cables first, or are they integral to the screen? Thanks.

The cables are integrated into the screen assembly, which is a sealed unit. There's no way to access the connector on the panel without disassembling the screen assembly, which is firmly glued together.

We followed instructions precisely. Turn the computer on prior to reattaching the bottom panel. We heard the computer come on and the fans are spinning, but the screen isn't working. Any suggestions, please???
@BartechTV6 жыл бұрын
Do you hear the startup tone? Can you see an image if you connect an external TV or monitor over HDMI? Reset the PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R when turning on the machine. If still no image, open the machine up again, disconnect the battery, and the LCD connector, clean the contacts with isopropyl or contact cleaner, then re-connect making sure there is no damage to any of the contacts and that it is properly seated. If you still have no image, and the computer works with an external display then it sounds like you have a bad screen and will need to exchange it with the person who sold it to you.

The glass is glued on there. You'd need a heat gun (or a powerful hair drier and something to direct the heat to a smaller area) and a lot of patience. Look at Louis Rossman's videos here on KZbin - he has some videos where he does exactly what you're looking to do.
