Just wanted to drop a comment that I used your video to help swap my 5th gen seatbelt today. It was overall pretty useful but there are a few major differences between the generations. The bolt pattern is slightly different but that’s easy to figure out right away, and the wiring connection is also different. You need to disconnect the battery from its post before working on it, because the 5th gen seatbelts are equipped with an explosive charge. I thought it was funny the whole time you were taking trim pieces off saying it was nice and easy, and that was indeed the hardest part for me 😂 I cursed a lot and had to use those stupid plastic tools to get most of my trim off. I had to phone a friend a few times for this one 😅 Last slip up on my part… there’s only two total 10mm bolts you remove in the whole process for the 5th gen. One is short and one is long. I paused in the process and forget which order I pulled them out. Long on top! Shorter on the bottom. I’m admittedly a complete amateur learning mechanics in my 30s 🙃

Hey there, thanks for this video. Friday at lunch time my belt just stopped retracting entirely in my 3rd Gen 4Runner ('99) so I ordered a new one from Toyota (probably could have found one at a wreckers or cheaper online but I need my vehicle!). It arrived on Tuesday (yesterday) and after an hour, I had a brand new seat belt working beautifully! The 3rd gen has a couple of differences, the kick plate trim along the front and back seats has screws that had to come out. There is no upper plastic trim on mine so that was a bit easier and fewer bolts to deal with. The top mounting point did not come with a cover so I just reused the existing one and the colour seems to be a good match. The bottom of the belt is strapped to the floor so I had to lift the carpet a bit but once the kick plates are off, it's easy to see where to do that. A dealership had left a trim removal tool in my wife's Santa Fe so I had access to that to take off all the trim and that was pretty slick. All told, there are 3 14 mm bolts and one 10 mm (thanks for mentioning the sizes, made it that much quicker) and six screws for the floor trim pieces. I'm super pleased with how things turned out and it's got me thinking about washing the other belts so their performance is better too. I'll have to wait until it warms up or use a blow dryer too (I'm in Calgary). Thanks again for the helpful tutorial!

Just an FYI. I had a problem on my Tacoma where the seat belt wouldn't retract well. I saw a EwToob video where you pull the seat belt all the way out, place a clamp on the belt to prevent it from retracting and soak the belt in a bucket of soapy water over night. Next day, remove the belt out of the bucket and soak in a bucket of clean water. The next day let it dry out completely. It's amazing, it's like a brand new belt again! Apparently all the years of grime on the belt makes it too stiff to wind up.

Oh wow! That's legit, this might've worked in my case too. Thanks for sharing.

thanks for this info, you just saved me $256. my 2007 4runner is due for inspection next month and my drivers seatbelt wouldnt retract. I just assumed the spring was worn out. I was watching this video and getting ready to purchase a new seatbelt assembly online for $256 when I saw your comment. I just finished cleaning mine and it's retracting all the way now. I did it a little differently because I need to drive my car daily, couldnt let it sit around a couple days with the belt soaking and drying. I hand washed the belt in a bucket with hot water and laundry detergent, then emptied the filthy water and repeated with another bucket of soapy water. then rinsed the belt in a bucket of plain hot water and dried it with a hair dryer. took under 30 minutes and I'm thrilled. thanks again!

@@LLcreeker just passing along good information. My "new to me" 2003 4Runner needs the same treatment, but I'm procrastinating.
