Thanks. I used to change the belt on older cars - from the 70's - they were easy because they were at the front. I've never done one on an east-west engine. Doesn't look as bad as I thought. Taking the front wheel off is a good idea.

Ohh nice, yes I miss working on cars like that, that had tons of space in front of the engine. Yes taking the wheel not required, but does give you some room to fiddle down low

I've loosened the firs 2 bolts and it doesn't release/drop. There is another larger bolt above the alternator which is tight. I might need to release that one too. BTW, the belt is cactus. I'm surprised it's still there. Gulp!

Are there two belts on this generation rav4? What belt controls the power steering pump and water pumps for example?

The main accessory belt goes from crank to ac compressor and alternator then theres a 2nd smaller belt goes from crank to power steering. The water pump is driven by the timing belt located behind time cover 👍

This video was super helpful. What voltage do you get when you start the car the first time? on the alternator I just installed on my 98 its at like 13.7V but on my 97 it gets to 14.5 right away. Does that mean the belt might be loose?

13.5-15 volts is good with engine running 👍 try revving engine a little see if changes

I have a 96 rav4 and I have squeaking and hesitation when accelerating. Any idea what the problem could be ?

Hmm could be 2 unrelated problems. But Id check belt and pulleys for squeak. Spray each pulley one at a time with wd40 til squeak goes away. Could be bad bearing or loose/misaligned. For the hesistation make sure transmission fluid isnt low. Check engine codes too

Engine codes will help a lot with hesitation. Could be multitude of possible sensors, clogged fuel filter, bad plugs or wires, distrib cap

Do I need to do anything to the alternator before using a ratchet to loosen it? Or is it safe to touch? It's my first time making a repair on a car.

You can disconnect the negative lead to the battery so they'll be no chance of anything to happen with alternator 👍

Hello John DIY, Just want to asking you questio n.? Does the Toyota1996-2000 Rav4 3s-Ge -5door, AC compressor have the solanoid?? Or Any AC system have solanoid??becos my AC does not blow cold and Compressor clutch does not engage -cut off.. Any idea to help??? Thanks.

Make sure has enough refrigerant in system. Clutch wont engage unless full. It does have an AC pressure switch

i have a 99 rav 4 and my serpentine belt just came loose all of a sudden. the tension on my alternator is maxed out and the belt is still extremely loose. both the old and new belt are loose and obviously it had to have been tight for it to have ran for so long. just mind boggling and not sure what to do

Hmm that doesnt make sense, check all the pulleys, AC, Alternator and crank and make sure theyre all solid and not wobbly. Compare belt lengths too. Makd sure have right replacement belt

Need to remove timing belt cover first then should be able to access it. I replaced the timing belt and pulley, Water pump too, on this engine, but its been many years.

Theres a lock nut that locks it in place. Then theres the tension adjusting bolt 👍🏻
