RJ, a year ago, I couldn't adjust a rear deraillur. You have taught me how to do so much, I flip a couple of bikes a month, and have a serious passion and love for bikes that is only growing. You have truly been the biggest part of me getting bikes that would have gone to crap or trash, back on the road at good prices. All my customers have been really grateful, and I meet some of the best people dealing with bicycles. I am so in love with a green/black Giant Iguana that I just got for a song, and you and your comforting voice and familiar garage are about to guide me through getting this things shifters ungummed and into more than 3 gears, lol. So happy to be spending another quite night working on an amazing bike with my reliable bike mechanic instructor. Truly love you man, best to you and yours...and your bikes, from Vancouver, WA just outside Portland, thank you so much my friend!

You're the MAN RJ!! I like these little quick videos, of specific model Shimano/Sram shifters and how to run new gear cables through each one. They're all different, but you making a really simple and quick 3 minute showcasing how to remove the old cable, and run the new is Amazing! Thanks for all ya do, and teaching the rest of us buddy. 1st Like. 1st Comment. I'm getting ready to buy an old MTB to work on over the winter and ride in the spring. So, these videos about shifters, forks, rear suspension and bushings are getting saved to a Playlist. When the time comes they'll be quite helpful indeed. Because, all of my experience so far has involved Road bikes.

What do you do if the old cable head broke off and is inside the shifter? Pretty certain mine is as when I put the new cable in it won't advance the cable. I'm speculating the head of the old broken cable is lodged somewhere inside. Worried about unscrewing the other screws as often times there are springs and such that may not go back the way they are intended. Any advice is appreciated...or I will see my local bike shop can deal with it...
@RJTheBikeGuy4 жыл бұрын
You figure it out. Not a standard answer or fix. That is why you replace cables well before they get to the point of breaking.
@DZeeSea5 жыл бұрын
Great, I couldn't figure out how I could remove the cable on the Shimano SL-R3000(Sora), but it uses the same plastic screw system as displayed here. I hadn't even noticed the screw and thought I might have to open up the bottom casing like some other Shimano shifters.

Fantastic information and well shot! Can I ask a couple questions? 1) I have the Deore 510 system (rapid shifters and derailleurs) on an all original 2003 Jamis Dakar Sport. It shifts poorly at the cassette. Cassette and chain are very clean (like shiny chrome clean). I've replaced the derailleur and trued the hanger using the Park Tools bar. I have all the adjustments dialed in. What I'm seeing is very little movement of the derailleur in the middle 2 or 3 positions on the cassette. The derailleur moves fine and has it's normal "jumps" otherwise. The only thing I can think of, is that the cable is sliding stiff, probably up at the section of cable housing that leaves the shifter, and goes to the top tube. My set up looks like what your Trek has in this video. Do you think that's probably my issue. 2) Which cable housings do you prefer on Ama zon? Looks like there are quite a few options, and I'd like to avoid buying cheap junk. Thanks for your time!

Rj thanks for the video. I spent two hours trying to get the front derailer working but it looks like I need a new cable. I have the Shimano deore mega on my tassajara. I also broke the shifter dial since I had no clue where to change it and started taking the covers off. So my question is, do you have a link for a cable replacement and where could I get the internal pink lever piece or does that whole cover have to get changed. If so how do you install that so I don't break it again.
@RJTheBikeGuy5 жыл бұрын
You can probably buy individual cables/housing at local bikes shop. I buy in bulk from Amazon.com myself. You are unlikely to find shifter parts. Live with it, or replace the whole shifter.
@myshots1015 жыл бұрын
@@RJTheBikeGuy Thanks. I'll see what I can find. I figure that shifter may have to be replaced but that's not a huge deal since it works. Just a bit annoying but it is my fault for not checking since I was tired.

Would you happen to have a video on how to fix the gear indicator on these? I have a shifter that was seized and I got it fixed but now the gear indicator doesn’t work. Thanks
@Koos_R6 жыл бұрын
If you take the top off (2 screws) you can fiddle around with the indicator and reattach it again. If the plastic bits aren't broken it's probably been mounted while the shifter was in a different position then the indicator, which has a small spring which makes it go to one side if I recall correctly.
