Detailed info on how to replace spark plugs (basic tune up). As you can see my brother was doing the work himself and all I did was guide him. Now you use this same vid to do your own tune up! Be on the look out for another vid called "What's a spark plug?
Tools used:
3/8 ratchet
3/8 6inch extension
3/8 3inch extension
3/8 10mm socket
5/8 spark plug socket
flashlight
MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE WORKING!!!!!!

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm loyal to my regular garage, but the man recently suffered some health problems and decided to retire. I went with the Champion Iridium plugs because I've had great luck with them in the past. They are a bit more expensive, but since I was saving on the job I decided to go all out. The plugs that came out were Champions and the center electrodes were almost gone, I don't know how the plugs were still firing. I didn't have the 6 inch extension, so I used two 3" extensions and taped everything together so the socket didn't get stuck on the plug after tightening. I used a small compressor to blow out debris before removing each plug (which I wouldn't have considered until you mentioned it). I also added a touch of never-sieze to the threads of the new plug, and a dab of dielectric grease on the boot and coil pack gasket for the next time. Thanks again!

Thank you so much.... I have this same exact vehicle.. and the garage was going to charge me $150 for changing the spark plugs.... I have been learning back yard mechanic things like changing brakes and rotors, oil, etc. but I have never wanted to try something like this because it looked complicated... Just changed my 05 Dakota plugs yesterday. Quick tip: if the unscrewed plugs won’t come out in the socket just drop a telescoping magnet in there to lift it out.

This is one of the better videos that have seen .you've got a narrator and then you've got a guy doing the work the camera is right where it needs to be and your narration stayed on track nice job guys.. by the way I have now chosen to keep my 05 Durango same engine as you versus my 99 Expedition with a 5.4 because you've got to remove the fuel rail to get to the coil packs I think you've got to remove some of the injectors as well. Thank you very much :) I hate taking my car to a mechanic because I am a female and they immediately assume I am mechanically illiterate, which I am not. I always do the repairs on my vehicles myself. I have my Chilton's, but sometimes they leave out parts that they assume you already know. This is the first time since I have had my Durango that it has needed anything done to it, and I have my Chilton and AutoZone online repair manuals, but watching your video really helped with a few things that wasn't clear to me. I've never changed spark plugs that didn't have wires or the long tube looking wires so I was a little unsure and didn't want to start until I had all the information I needed to feel confident before beginning the job. After a week of reading and googling I found your video to be the most straight forward get to the point and get it done. So I am all changed into work clothes and I'm going to head out to my garage and get busy with this Durango. Don’t pull all the coils at once as he told him, dirt and shit can fall down there and cause firing problems or even worse something that now requires you to remove the heads! If you had access to shop air and blew it down before you would have seen how much dirt and crap that could fall in thats around. They have air in a can so I keep a couple cans around. Tried to tackle this and figured I would go for the hardest plug (last one on passenger side) first. Got as far as trying to remove the plug and it was frozen. I backed out and lost the spark plug socket on the plug down the tube. I struggled for 30 min to get the extension back onto the sockety and finally got the spark plug socket back. I quickly put it back together and abandoned the project. I'll let my mechanic do this for me. Note to anyone who is going to try this . . . the last plug in the back of the engine on both sides is almost impossible to get to leaving me to believe that most mechanics probably leave those in. 😳

Jennifer, I normally replace my coils every 100,000 miles or so. It's easy to replace all the coils at the same time you replace your spark plugs since you have to remove the coils to get to the plugs anyway. Signs of bad coils can include a rough idle, a gasoline smell coming out the exhaust, a check engine light, and the transmission shifting badly when the engine is under a load (like passing a car or going up a hill). Hope that helps.

what size extension did you use to remove the sparkr plugs ? 6 inch or 8 inch? i have a 2003 dodge durango, the black rubber hose that is running across your engine that you removed is different with my car. my hose is aluminum so im not sure if i can move it out of the way because it is sitting on top of one of the spark plugs.

It's a coil on plug system, no wires to replace. Inspect your plug boots if they are torn or the metal contact spring inside is corroded then replace the boot. Any auto parts store has them.

Simply buy the new plugs first. Find a plug socket in your tool box to fit new ones and use it to remove old ones. No mistake with that process. I changed all coils also. At $28 per hole with plug and coil it pricey but my labor was free!

Make sure the engine is completely cooled down before trying to remove spark plugs. They break easily when they are warm.

The 2008 4.7 is different it uses 16 spark plugs and you need a tin wall socket for the ones that are at the coils

I have an 08 Durango 4.7 and ive battled with parts store employees to mechanics to shops to fam and friends and they confuse me with the whole "whoever the hell told you it needs 16 spark plugs is an idiot" and "thats stupid ive never heard of that" to the few who have told me "dont let them tell you that its only 8, you need 16.. 2 per cylinder (intake and exhaust) and LET THEM KNOW" I'm watching videos and reading and i HARDLY find any info or anyone else questioning or mentioning this. I appreciate the video, guys. I am about to tackle this project myself, but changing the boots and wires at the same time. I was curious if the backs were a PITA due to the COE design, but this looks pretty straight forward. I will also be putting some dielectric grease on the boots so they don't get cruddy in the future. My only complaint with the video was that it was zoomed in a bit too much. I would have liked to see a little more surrounding the area that he is working.

Great video. Thanks for posting. I just followed the instructions in this vid to replace my plugs on my 2005 Durango. It went very well. The only problem is when I pulled the coil on the last cylinder (left, deeper in), a metal plate with a L-shape and three holes on it came off. I had no idea what to do with it. I just put it back as a washer between the coil and the chassis. Could that be the reason, after I was done, the engine light came on with code U1120 which means that the PCM did not receive the signal from the sensor?
