Every time I watch a 1a video I’m so jealous because I’m out here laying on the ground bleeding and y’all have lifts 😅😂

Have this ahead of me this weekend. Ordered the starter before this video was published... And happy I waited this long to put it in, this is a really well done video giving me plenty of confidence thanks!

I just got done doing this job on my 2010 F150 5.4, and not on a lift so let me offer some advice. I jacked up the truck pretty high, and used a jack stand and removed the right front tire. Once you get the electrical connections off, the bottom bolt comes out pretty easy as shown here. I used a 13mm boxed end wrench to break it free then a 1/4" drive ratchet and 13mm socket on the nut and a deep well socket on the bolt. On the middle bolt I did not have the combination of socket and extensions he shows in this video and did not seem to have the space at the back end of the starter to fit it in anyway. I was able to get to the middle bolt with a 1/4" drive ratchet and deep well 13mm socket. I broke it loose with a 13mm 12 point boxed end wrench and then used the ratchet/socket to get it the rest of the way out. Note: with a 6 point there is not enough room to maneuver the wrench, but if you get lucky on the position of the bolt it might work. As for the top bolt, I went in thru the wheel well using an 18" long 3/8" extension with a swivel and standard 13mm socket. There will be a lot of angle on the swivel so you might need to try it a few times getting the swivel in the right position so it will not bind....but it will break free this way. You can also use the flexible extensions (see below) to help get the bolt out once it's loose. One of the hard parts is seeing the dang bolt head so you can get the socket on it. But if you have a nice task light or flashlight you can shine it down from over the top of the upper control arm/frame so it's not in the way and you can see the bolt head. Assuming you are on your back under the truck, there were times I flipped completely around (head and feet revered positions) to get the right hand/arm leverage. It may seem like a small thing but it's not....trust me, it really helped. So keep that in mind. Getting the starter out can be a pain in and of itself. Pay attention to how you get it out so you can use the same angle to get it back in. To get the top bolt back in I used the same combination of socket/swivel/extension. I used some putty to hold the bolt to the socket while I maneuvered it into place. Once again you need a flashlight to put up over the top of the upper control arm/frame to shine down on the bolt....it really helps. Also, I used a wire wheel to clean all the bolt threads and added some anti-seize to make them easier to finger tighten them back in. Another thing that helped me were some flexible extensions. I bought a pair (6" x1/4" & 8"x 3/8") off Amazon. These help when putting the bolts back in using your fingers and sockets. They are not strong enough to tighten the bolts to full torque but it makes getting back in a lot easier. Hope this helps you all. It's a bear of a job on your back, but with the right tools it's not too bad. I had to buy a few things like the deep well socket for the bottom piggy back bolt, but I had most of it. Good luck !!

Thanks for showing, I've found in 40 years of wrenching that it's almost always easier to remove the hardest to reach bolt first. Then the easiest bolt last. Just like you did install the easiest first and don't completely tighten any until they are all started.

Thanks for this video, I just changed out the starter on my 2010 f 150. I couldn’t fit my 3/8 ratchet and extension on that top bolt (just slightly too long) and was barely able to break it with the 1/4” but I got it off new one on. Took just over 2 hours to do the job and saved me a few hundred bucks on labour. Thanks again

Your video was very helpful. Took a long time because of sticky bolts, rust and rain storms (I had to work in my driveway), but I managed to remove and install a re-manufactured starter on my 2009 f-150 I obtained at the local ford dealer. You weren't kidding about the top bolt, which I had to feel around by guesstimating the bolt interfaces on the bell housing with my fingers, then guessing where to re-insert the bolt by feel. Lost the bolt once, but found it after purchasing a new bolt and eventually finished the job. Starter worked from the get-go. Thanks!

Great video. Glad I didn’t take it to a shop to do this. For that top bolt, I used an extension to break it loose. After, I rigged up a “mini ratchet” that goes 13 mm socket, short extension, swivel, and short extension (as the handle). Managed to get it all done in about 3 hours.

I had a right-angle socket gizmo that had been sitting unused for years. Used that with a wobble impact socket. Came right out. I also might add that I had to do it all in the drive while on jack stands.

Usually things are easier for me to put back on. Not that top bolt! I thought I was going to have to dislocate a couple of my fingers to get the bolt started by hand. Very awkward area very very awkward. Would not be so bad if the exhaust collector and cat joint was not in the way

I'd use anti seize on the threads! Ford should've put bolts on the rear of the bellhousing instead of removing from front.!!!!!!!!

Save ya a bunch of heartache and cursing. Take the solenoid off (loosen both nuts or screws whichever you have) let it hang and you can reach it with a 6 inch extension and a regular socket. Takes no time at all. Leave the bottom bolt for last. No need for a Frankenstein extension.

I did this whole process, installed a new starter, checked every fuse and relay in the truck after that didn't work, finally checked the fuse box in the cab as a last ditch effort and... there was a cable half unplugged. That was causing several issues the darn thing was having. Probably why the previous owner sold it so cheap to be frank.
