Done and my starter is working beautifully! To anyone watching, you're going to want to make sure you have a solid extension for your ratchet set, just like in the video. I had a few minor extenders and none of them could get me into the right place, especially on the two final screws on the starter itself. Thankfully I had a serpentine belt breaker tool set and it got me just the right leverage to make it no problem. Anyway, thank you for this video! I know it's 8 years old but it sure helped me out in a big way today.

Your video helped another person! I'm 33 and had never fixed my own car before, it took me about an hour and saved me $200 right in time for Thanksgiving! I took my time and didn't loose anything or break anything. I noticed an issue that may have been the actual problem for me, the little black electrical connection on the starter had lost it's clip locking it down, explaining the intermittent starting, I put the new part just in anyway for good measure, then I put a TINY dab of gorilla glue onto the plug of that connection to make sure she stays put - not sure if thats kosher or not but I've never had gorilla glue NOT work for me lol.

One of the best videos on replacing a starter on a 2002 Camry, although the connectors on the back of the filter were not shown how to remove as clearly although not hard to figure that out. Very factual and to the point. Good pointers while working, thanks.

I'm 31, female, far from fam. I watched this video among others. I was able to remove, get my starter rebuilt by a local shop, and then reinstalled it myself. It took some for me, a total beginner. Luckily I was able to borrow tools but some auto stores will loan them. I had a hard time with the filter housing wire clips. Once I figured out how to release the clips and that you've got to push down while you swing the clip open, I was good. I'm extremely grateful for this video. It saved me $300 (knock on wood) just like a lot of people are saying. The rebuild on my starter was $98. The only concern I have is that I did indeed drop one of the filter housing washer things but I was still able seal and tighten the lid without the second one. But my big question is, if it didn't land on the ground... WHERE DID IT GO?????? Lastly, I recommend watching a few other videos to get used to the anatomy and see all the angles. I have literally never done something like this.

Thank you so much. ONly problem I had is the starter I bought gear was stuck and would not slide out. When I reinstalled everything the gear would not engage. I pulled starter off, pulled on gear (it was stuck in housing) and that fixed issue. Just a heads up to others. It was an easy repair thanks to your video! my clip broke off on the starter connection. After pulling the battery on my 06 4cyl Camry, the computer lost the idle circuit. Procedure to reset that is: Warm up car, then turn off. turn the ignition to on twice. then start car put in drive and set the brake. Let it idle for about 3-5 minutes as the computer learns how to idle again. This procedure should be used anytime you dis-connect the battery for any length of time.

Great video. I have two comments. I ordered a starter online. When it arrives, *check it carefully* to make sure that the plastic piece (at 1:47) is not broken. Mine was. Also, at 2:33, my new starter did not slip into place so easily. I needed to back it out a little & start tightening the 14mm bolts (by hand, carefully, back and forth from one to other other). That was the only way the new starter would go into place.

FYI for anyone else here that can use this, it wasn't this easy for me. I was able to keep the battery in and work around it (disconnected of course), but when I went to pull my starter out, it was stuck. I ended up using a hammer and a 25lb weight to impact the top to get it to budge, then the hammer and 2 flathead screwdrivers to wedge in between the starter and each bolt hole. I hammered on each screwdriver in alternating fashion until the starter came free, and then pulled it out about as easy as this video makes it seem. I would recommend greasing that 'neck' on the starter right where it enters the engine block, if at all possible. I'm no mechanic, so take my advice with a pinch of salt.

Very helpful video, can't get the starter to come out though.. 05 Camry and it's probably the original starter. Removed both bolts on the starter, the wire connector and the solenoid nut, but it will not come out. There was some smoke from the starter when we got a new battery and tried to start it after sitting for the winter, wondering if the flywheel is jammed on the inside? Tried pulling, hammering the starter, prying at the joins, will not come out. Ideas?
@DIYtimeTRD2 жыл бұрын
If there was smoke, it probably was burnt and started melting onto the housing. Try to stick a very long pipe into it and see if you can rotate it like a breaker bar. A lit of leverage should break it off.
@enforceraw2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. It was fused, either from being there for nearly 20 years or from trying to start it. We ended up using a sledge to break the whole starter apart, but it was still stuck inside although the flywheel spun and moved back and forth freely. We had to get a mechanic to visit and use a small grinder etc to cut it out, which did work after about an hour of cutting. It did come out in mostly one piece after that In the end the alternator was gone. We aren't sure if the starter even had a problem now but what's done is done. New battery, starter, and alternator and the car is running fine again. Won't make the same mistake of letting a vehicle sit idle through an entire winter

There is really no set lifespan for starters. I wouldn't worry about it until it starts showing signs of eventual failure: slow to crank engine, intermittent or doesn't engage at all, noise, grinding sound, etc.
