Had a garage mechanic tell me today that my whole front end needed to be replaced and he could do it for $800.00. I decided to wait since I just bought the thing, license and registration was close to $500.00 and tires were pushing $300. I went to change my oil and saw that one side sway bar link was missing and the other so worn out it was loose....less than 20 dollars and I changed them out, it steers good now without the wobble. I bought this '02 Ford Ranger a few months ago. It squeaks a lot when I drive, when I go over a speed bumps, or holes, even when I sit in the drivers seat. I was planning to do a complete suspension overhaul. After watching this video I now think it is the sway bay and bushings. If true that will save me $money in the short term. Eventually I will overhaul other suspension areas. Thank Mr. Chris Fix.

I plan to buy a suspension parts kit and get this repair going. Maybe I'll hire a good shade tree to help if I get stuck.. From what I've seen on your videos and others, I can get this done. Never noticed symptoms when driving, but when I did my oil change yesterday, I discovered two things. First, I have an oil leak somewhere, only 2.5qts out of 6qts was drained; and that I have a total of 2 sway bar bushings (that is counting passenger and driver side), so I am going to try and fix that tonight. I had a bad "clunk" when I turned or hit small bumps. Turned out I was missing a bushing on each side. I noticed it while doing and oil change. Replaced mine this weekend on my '03 Explorer Sport. Used the same parts. I followed the video and it was really easy. Ran into one problem where I did not have enough threads exposed for the nut. I had someone pull down on the sway bar enough to expose the threads and quickly screwed it on. Great instruction. Subscribed just for this.

Your sway bar should move relatively easy, shouldn't have to hang on it to get yer nut on.

I had to do this same job on my '04 Explorer Sport Trac, by myself, and ended up lowering the vehicle onto a jackstand, and then using the jack under the lower control arms to get the end link arm bushings to squeeze down enough to get the nut on; couldn't rotate the sway bar enough by hand by myself. But it all worked out.

I like how you very succinctly describe what sway bars/links actually DO. The only thing you'll ever see on Google and such is an overly general 'they help with stability' or 'the help with controlling your vehicle'...you actually say it, like all the other sources should do.

Atreyu Auryn lol, yea, I too was also taught to never back off a nut! Especially on castle nuts where you have to stick a cotter pin though. Add a lockwasher and locktight to the nut. No worries if you set it to factory recommendation. Or get selflocking nuts. Only very small thing I would recommend is turn the frame bushings so the split faces aft to avoid water entrapment. Other wise great job as usual. Your videos keep my mechanical brain working. We are all here to learn and share knowledge.

The facing surfaces of the small bushings where they meet the sway bar need grease also. That's where the real squeaking comes from. Don't use lock-tight on the big bushing mount bolts, use anti seize. Looked like those bolts went into anchored nuts in the frame. if you use lock-tight you increase the likelihood of breaking the anchor nuts loose next time you need them off and, properly torqued, they are not ever going to vibrate loose. I use anti-seize on just about every fastener on the chassis. The problem down there is not that they vibrate loose, the problem is they rust together. Anti-seize is your friend under there. It will NOT induce unintentional loosening of bolts. Use it on lug studs also to get accurate torque. A little goes a long way.

The original sway bar bushing opening was towards the rear of the vehicle , I would think facing it forward could allow road salt and dirt to enter the bushing easier

Good eye !! Yes, the crack goes toward the back ! Makes for cleaner, neater install. I used Energy Suspension brand of Urethane Bushings and end links -- the Front Bushings that attach to the frame were replaced with Greaseable fittings. One-inch REAR Sway Bar gets Energy Suspension's Greaseable Bushings and Urethane-bushed End Links.

Thanks for the advice, Chris! Just did this to my '01 Mazda B4000, and my old end links looked just a cruddy as those. I rubbed some anti-seize on the bolt shaft where it contacts the outer tube, so hopefully that won't be an issue next time (which is hopefully not for a while).

I didn't know you had to unbolt the sway bar lol, I feel so dumb as I loosened the lower control arm when I replaced the upper control arm to be able to slide the link in. I have no idea how I didn't think of taking off 4 bolts to get the link in lol. Thank you for saving me a hassle

I have to add that in my experience with my Yukon, it is best to install the sway bar links with the wheels on the ground then jack the front end off the ground to tighten. This alleviated any play that I experienced installing and tightening on the ground. I get around 6-8 more full turns and steering is tight no chatter.

Good video -- BUT -- Sway bar bushing was installed backwards -- crack goes to the BACK ! End Link nut was installed up-side-down. That's a NY-LOK nut, and it is always installed with the rounded part toward the end of the bolt. After completing sway-bar installs/upgrades on several types of vehicles, I've found that Energy Suspension has the best selection of top-quality Urethane components for both street and racing applications.

I went to a garage this morning and the job would cost almost 700$ can... and if they also change the struts it comes to like 1800$ lol. And i paid the car 1000 $, so I guess I'll try to change the bushings and links myself.

@GoodmorningDan I have a pontiac vibe, so it's like a corolla or matrix... The links were not so hard to change, I used a metal saw to cut the rusted bolt and a vice grip to hold the rubber part to remove it. But, I totally aborted the sway bar bushing. I would have to lower the sub frame and a shit load of stuff. And actually I didn't felt too much play... It fixed the shaky steering at 100km/h, and really reduced body rolls. But 6 months later, I think changing the bushings could be a thing to considerate, but I'm really not sure I'll do it myself, and I should probably change lots of things in the suspension in general... so I don't know if it's worth it

Sometimes heating up the part can help Break It Loose. and if that alone don't work, reheat the part then spray it with penetrating oil. let it sit for a moment and nine times out of ten it will come out.

Thank you! I've been dealing with rear end noises that have been driving me mad! Ordered some Moog sway bar bushings and end links, followed your steps, and the noise is 90% better! Now to locate that other 10% haha

If you plan keeping the vehicle for a period of time that you'd replace the sway bar bushings again a good practice is to use Anti-Seize compound especially on the tube you install. I'm completely redoing my 06 Impala , quikstruts, lower control arms, bushings and links front and rear, outer tie rod ends, replacing broken front sway bar and bushings, power steering rack and pinion and I use Anti-Seize all the way around the vehicle as you never know if you may have to pull that part off to fix something else, due to accident, warranty purposes and it helps being able to get them off. don't know if you've seen the moog problem solver kit for the front sway bar link. It's nice how they have them setup. Keep up the videos ++1!

NO PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC would use or recommend an "anti-seize" compound be applied to the threads of suspension parts. Clean bolts that are properly torqued to specs will not loosen in service.

Just discovered my bushings are gone on my 04 ranger sway bar links when I removed my front bumper to paint it. Thanks for the video

I am amazed the the sway bar link wasn’t broke already. Mine rusted and broke on my Mazda B4000. Ford had thicker ones to fix this problem. Went from 3/8” to 1/2 “ bolt size.

Chris I wish you'd do a video on changing the REAR Sway bar Bracket bushings (not the end link bushings, but the actual bar bushings... on a 2003 Ford Exploder. Thanx for your vids - they're the best!
