Excellent video. I have a '99 V70 XC. Car charges at 13.5 volts, not enough to keep charged for around town, plus there is a 12 volt short to ground draw when off. After pulling every fuse on the car, I narrowed it down to the alternator. I hate to spend the money but I love the car. Test came back voltage regulator is bad. Found no + to ground shorted wires.

I found my noise.... the bearing in the alternator pulley is shot. Thanks for the video. It is the bolts shared with compressor that were baffling me. BTW I have a 2001 S40, so the engine bay looks different but luckily the PS pump, Alt and AC comp are the same... Thanks.

Thanks Robert. Another helpful video. My 2004 C70 is whining every time I crank it up. I'm not sure it's the alternator but it is suspect. Any way to tell if it needs replacing. The red light comes on the dashboard when I start the engine, but then goes away. Is that another indicator?

Robert I have a question? On my 1998 V70 s/wagon it is stuck closed. The electric switch or manual open pull lever won’t open the rear hatch. You have a solution or trick up your sleeve for this? Let me know

Thank you for posting this video. Should I completely unbolt the AC Compressor and lower it to the ground to get enough clearance to get the alternator out? I have loosened the bottom AC Compressor bolts but don't seem to have enough room to rotate the alternator to get to the electrical connections. If I lower the compressor to the ground, do I need to worry about any of the hoses leading to/from it? (IE: Like when I had to remove the hoses from the power steering pump to get it out of the way) Are the hoses connected to the compressor flexible enough to move it without issue, or are they rigid pipes?

Hey Robert, Another excellent video! So far everything I have ever had to do to this S70 you have had a video for! Keep up the good work. You are a tremendous help to those of us who cant afford Volvo dealer prices! One point though, is there ever any reason to disconnect Both battery cables? The negative should be sufficient, should it not?

That's your call. If you take the batter out if the car, then touch the positive with a tool, and the other end of the tool to a ground, will anything happen?

@@RobertDIY Nothing will happen if there isn't something in contact with both battery terminals. The scenario you suggested - no, nothing will happen if earth ground is not connected to the negative terminal. So touching to "a ground" will not result in an issue, UNLESS that ground is also connected to the negative battery terminal. Long story short, disconnecting either the negative or positive terminal AT THE BATTERY is sufficient.

Great video, thanks a lot for this DIY Robert! Got my Check engine light on my C70 01 lit up for about a week, i've been driving it occationally and nothing obvious was wrong so i postponed getting my OBD reader back from a friend until now, and the car is totally dead. Could be something has drained the battery, but i checked all light switches and whatnot and there was nothing obvious. Gonna have to jump the battery and get the car started, and read the error message to see what it is, but if it's the alternator i'll know what to do, thanks to you. :) Greetings from Sweden.

@@RobertDIY Yeah that came to light as i jumped the car an hour ago, gonna have to wait for it to come back. alternator seems fine though, i could disconnect the second battery and the alternator supplied current with only the dead battery connected. The search continues. Thanks for your response!

Hi Robert, I'm curious I replaced my battery and I kept having an issue with battery acid on the negative side so I took it back and they gave me a new battery. I installed the battery everything lights up but when I try to start the car I get a clicking noise. It doesn't sound like the starter could it be my alternator now.
