This video will show you the quick and easy method of replacing the alternator on a Volvo 850 and S/V70. Should work for all model years from 1993 - 1998. Took me about 2 hours. Please post the mileage on your car of your alternator failure.
When you put in the lower hidden alternator bolt, prior to putting the power steering pump assembly in, don't push the bolt all the way in, the threads will be in the way of the bracket. Just push it through till the tip is level with the front of the motor.

I changed the alternator on my ‘95 850 many years ago and that there bolt did give me trouble but I managed that’s all to your video from then. And today, I am changing the alternator on a 2000 s80, so I’m back. Very interesting to see the bolt on the pulled bay in all its hidden glory. Thank you for the opportunity. Thanks for the video again!

Hey guys. I've owned my volvo 850 (855 USA) for nearly seven years and I've found Roberts Videos a great help. Like to share with you an ABS fault repair. Before spending out on parts, first check the power cable that feeds the ABS motor on top of the alloy pump block. The insulation breaks apart and the two wires short out. Remove the motor and reinsulate the bare wires all the way along its 4 inches. I used four layers of electrical tape. Then tape the two into a bundle and test it with a 12 battery to make sure it's now working. Reinstall and your ABS light should go out after a short drive. Takes 2 hrs to complete and only costs you the price of a roll on electrical tape!

@robertdiy thanks for another great video. The procedure on an 960/s90/v90 is about the same, but perhaps a bit easier because of the alternator faces the radiator. For my S90 I had to remove the airbox (the complete airbox, not just the cover). It's helpful to remove the upper radiator hose (you might as well since you won't loose much fluid if any at all). And it's even more helpful to remove the radiator fan. I ended up having to replace the radiator at the same time which opened up even more space. Oh, another tip is to clean the rust and gunk off your bolts, bolt holes, and mounting surfaces to ease installation. On installation, you may need to wiggle the alternator or even use a screwdriver or small prybar between the mounting bracket and the alternator near the lower mounting bolt to get that bolt to line up. The most important thing to be aware of is that the pulley may be different, especially if you buy the 120A Bosch unit AL0752X.

I was wondering, did you not have to remove your serpentine belt
@travelingwithruffy
@travelingwithruffy 6 ай бұрын
I believe removing the serpentine belt is part of the procedure. It may be possible to slip the alternator out without disturbing the position of the belt too much, but it is probably better to replace the belt while you are there since the alternator is driving off of it.

*edit* On the 1998 S70. I would advise people consider pulling the power steering pump and the cage around it, which Robert also did a video on. The cage was jammed on the alternator flange, making it impossible to get the assembly out as I had left the recessed bolt in to give leverage to pull the alternator off the bracket - which I could not do and the hole in the bracket was no longer aligned to pull the bolt. If you pull two of the three mounting bolts of the pump (through holes in the PS pump pulley) and loosen the long bolt at the very top, the cage loosens and pulls right out with the pump in it. I detached the PS lines but you don't have to. Then the alternator is totally exposed. You made an issue of people asking about bolts, but "that bolt down there" is not always seen. Some of us are visual learners, and it made a HUGE difference for me to see where all these bolts/nuts are. In particular, the front left side and bottom of the PS pump pulley, has a recessed bolt and a non recessed bolt, in an area very hard to see. That engine mockup in your edit is extremely useful. Thanks to this video, my job is easier - thank you.

Thought I might share a solution I used in a pinch with no serpentine tool. The business end of an 11mm wrench fits in the ¾" space. Use an adjustable as a handle for leverage. Haven't seen that in any forums and we all tend to have those 2 things handy wherever we are with these cars.

Hey Robert, a total fan! I have a 1998 S90 project that I been reviving for a while now. Is in great running shape now until like 2 weeks ago. My ABS light keeps coming on and off and the other day I hit the brakes and it jump (skid) like several times, then driving it I heard a loud tatatata for like 30 sec it would stop and come back again and I think is coming from the front right side where my ABS unit is locate. The noise comes up randomly and not all the time. The Speedometer and rpm all work and seems to get into gear ok. I saw your post on ABS control module and the only symptom is the ABS light. I was planning to start replacing the relays on the ABS unit thinking maybe one is bad but not sure if either is bad would cause like the speedometer to fail as in this case is not. I checked the easy things like fuses and they are ok and I don't have a ABS scanner code reader and not sure if I want to buy as they are expensive for the volvo ones. No that many S90 out there or built and is hard to find information. Base on the symptoms any idea what could be?

living in a cold climate means my car doesn´t have air con (i´ve done alternators on 850s that do and don´t have aircon and without it is definitely a lot easier). without aircon, the bottom bolt is very easy to get to, even if you can´t see it. also without aircon, alternator just drops out through the bottom, in front of the frame so the power steering remains untouched. i´m a lazy person so i´ve never disconnected the radiator pipe when doing an alternator so maybe it makes things a bit easier but i´ve gotten away without ever doing it.

Very interesting! - The alternators on my '99 V70 and S70, mount differently to this. I had two alternator failures in two weeks (one on each car) just before Christmas. The first one (Oliver) just upped and quit on a trip to town - working when I parked, and wasn't working when I came back to the car an hour later. The other one (Sylvia) 'fried n' died' en-route to hospital one morning. It did strange things to the warning lights (ABS and SRS) and was overcharging just after it failed, and burned out my headlight bulbs! Shortly after that, the alternator stopped outputting completely - well weird. I ended up taking them both to the local garage (I bought my own replacements) and they did the job while I waited. The first one took just an hour to swap, and the second one took forty minutes (the guy reckoned it was because having done one already, it was easier next time round!). But looking at them, and the one in this video, there's quite a difference in the mountings. . . Good job I bought the right ones! I have a steering rack to replace on Sylvia, and I reckon it'll be another garage job. I have the new rack, but don't fancy grovelling about in the dirt - and it looks like an awkward and fiddly job?
