No need to program the batteries unless it has battery management. It looks like a small control module on the negative terminal. Typically if you have start/stop it will have it though, in that case you need to have it reprogrammed at a shop or dealer after reinstall. Sorry for the delayed response!

Great video. I just did this and found the large H6 size battery at Costco even though they don't have VWs or BMW in their computer..lol The fit was great. I always use battery terminal gel to prevent corrosion. Had traction control and tire pressure errors that went off after driving and reset pressure. Clock didn't lose it's setting or radio stations, stereo settings. I cut the outside corner of insulation jacket and covered the terminal wires as well to protect them from heat. I had no corrosion in the battery tray on '15 Sportwagon 115 dollars at Costco for full size H6 Interstate Battery. I tried H7 from Costco and it looks like the bottom of air filter would need to be removed to slide batt in and no room for tie down plate and I didn't want to experiment fitting it currently. Cheers

You should discuss the whole issue of AGM vs regular lead acid. I recently replace battery in my 2016 GTI and I kid you not, i called over 15 shops including 2 dealers and most thought the car had AGM stock and said you MUST reset the computer after installing new battery and you need scan tool. Autozone refused to sell me a battery cuz they said it MUST be reset by dealer or mechanic. Even vw dealer told me it was agm but I called multiple dealers and finally talked to vw PARTS GUY, he looked up the VIN and said ITS A NORMAL LEAD ACID, H5 OR H6 WILL WORK, NO RESET NEEDED. I spent weeks researching this as my car was still starting but slower and battery tested BAD by 2 diff auto parts places so I knew it was going out and it was 5 years old. But no one knew what kind of battery was oem and wanted PR codes. The vw PARTS guy told me PR J1L and also gave me oem vw battery p/n. so FINALLY after all that junk i realized i could just go to sams club and get a h6 installed (free installation). As you noted, battery tray is long enough for h6 and multiple mounting holes for the hold down bracket to mount. MANY places said i coul NOT get AGM if car just had regular lead acid. some said you cant get regular lead acid as the car came with AGM and charging system made for it. SUPER CONFUSING. Some said you need a MEMORY SAVER to plug in or put battery charger on the cables while battery was out to SAVE THE SETTINGS...but my settings where there after even though sams club didnt put on charger while battery was out. oh, the windows would NOT auto up/down right after...you had to hold the button for all the way up or down THEN they RELEARNED and auto up/down worked. car ran fine though and all radio stations were there. Please do video explaining all this krazy AGM stuff and resetting computer and what not. BAD INFO all over the internet and auto parts places are confused too.

This is what I did to my 2015 GSW TDI (Mk7). I just replaced my old EF H5 battery (I think it was a CPO replacement) with a Die Hard H6 AGM battery. I also bought battery terminal protector (small packet gel) and coated the terminals and connectors. I have a slow 2 amp setting battery charger, and connected both ends to the cables in the car before I removed the cables, and kept them attached the whole time. You can tie off the negative one to keep it out of the way but keep the charger connected. I also used some small rags around the cable connectors just to be sure nothing sparked. After the new battery was in, I attached the positive cable first and then the negative. No sparks. I then unclipped the battery charger cables. My smart VW was clueless that it had a new battery. Using OBDeleven I updated that I now have a "Binary-AGM" battery type (not EFB) and increased the rating from 61 to 70 Ah. I really don't think it cares about Mfg or serial #, but I guess you put those in just to keep the data current. I left 1111111111 in place and typed in DIEHARD. There were zero faults in this process. I'll update if I have any issues.

Thanks for sharing this helpful video with the DIY VW community outthere. In my case the battery died on me all out of the sudden w/out any warning. I was lucky to be at a gas station where I was able to get it jump started so I could drive to the closest VW dealer to have it replaced. So I wonder why modern car technology doesn't allow the driver to check on the battery status as it was in the old days when most cars had a voltimeter on the instrument cluster?...

Water and baking soda mixture to neutralize the acid. Use an old paint brush to scrub the tray. Flush with clear water. Use a terminal brush to scrape the corrosion off the car battery terminals and brighten up the battery posts. You may need a battery clamp spreader pliers to expand the clamps to fit the battery posts..
@danr81942 жыл бұрын
Mk7 battery needs to be coded for longevity. While it doesn't overall matter, the battery will not last as long due to the charging curve been different as it ages. If your vehicle came with a standard flooded battery and you install an agm it will not charge correctly. You need to change a few settings with VCDS. 1) battery manufacturer 2)Battery Type- change type to "fleece" for AGM 3) battery capacity- input the AH the battery is rated for. 4) battery serial number- put anything in for this, it just let's the ecu know a fresh battery is being installed.

Do you guys have a video of a battery replacement for a 2019 Jetta 1.4? Does a 2019 require adaptation or just driving and turning the steering wheel end-to-end will reset everything, by the vehicles ECU?
@fcpeuro Жыл бұрын
The 2019 Jetta will typically require the same sequence and adaptation as the MQB Mk7 GTI. In our experience, the steering adaptation usually resets itself after the battery is changed provided that the one coming out is not completely dead, and the car has not been without power for too long.

I seen from other videos that it is only required if your VW has the start/stop feature and if it does there will be an extra cable going to, i think the positive terminal. If your car doesnt have that system you could still reprogram a different battery size and it shouldnt hurt anything but not required.

Battery Heat Shield According to the VAG ERWIN Self-study guide, guide No.504 “Vehicle Batteries- Design & Function”, the engine bay is considered a high temperature place for the battery. This can adversely affect the durability of the battery due to:- “Corrosion of the positive grid, water consumption, & self-discharge increase.”. They also state that AGM batteries must retain the heat shields they have been installed with as they are more susceptible to heat damage. Conversely if your car wasn’t fitted with an AGM battery there is a chance that it won’t have the required heat shields & you will have to retro-fit them.

yes the ECU will lose its memory and you will lose your radio stations. The ECU can relearn everything though. When you first start with the new battery, the engine will be pretty rough, no cause for alarm it just had its settings cleared and will relearn them.
