How to replace the flat cable to repair the display

👨‍🔧 Watch this video and learn how to solder a flat (also called carbon ribbon cable or flat ribbon connector).
🔧 We show you how to solder the flat by using two different soldering iron tips: the T tip or the Chisel tip (this last one is not suggested).
Replacing a flat allows you to repair the display of instrument cluster, infotainment system, car radio, ect. of several vehicle models.

Amazing guide ! Thank you so much for it. Also who has problem of removing old pieces of cable, I recommend heating it up with hot air gun and then remove it with isopropyl alcohol. But don't heat it up too much ! Also watch out for pads, because they are fragile !

Hi, our flat cables release a sort of glue themselves when heated and pressed with the soldering tip, so they get sealed to the glass and to the PCB. You need to clean the contacts with solvent, just place the cable properly on the board and press it several times with the T tip at 350° as shown in the video.

Thanks for the video. In order to solder the flat cable with the T-soldering iron do you apply tin on the contacts first or after the cleaning you just you put the flex cable on the board and then you press with the T-iron? Thanks a lot..

Hi, in the video we didn't use any tape, our flat cables gets sealed to the PCB simply using the soldering iron with "T" tip at the correct temperature, which is 350°C, as they contain a glue which gets released when soldering.

i am in the mid of doing this acf repair. the problem is those pitch ...they are not 0.5 mm nor 1mm. i use one formula from google to measure those pitch on flex ribbon. so i want 30mm with 26 lines/pins. so i got 1.15mm pitch. I am tired asking this question to online Chinese seller they are so dumb and not answering my question but replying smthing not related at all. i even saw that flex ribbon you used in this video. but the question is what is the pitch ? i am looking for 30mm with 26 lines. hope you can tell me the pitch and width of that flex ribbon you used. thanks buddy

Bro I love your project. I need some help from you. I wanted replaced a broken lcd display panel from motor bike speedometer. Which had 58 connecting pin custom lcd panel 11.4 mm x4.4 mm. The lcd display not available in the market. but how that work since the trace on the glass aren't conductive? (I'm trying to repair a very basic timer. After removing the flex I can see in the very slight reflection of those trace on the glass, I thought I also removed the trace (eg. an conductive paint) by removing the flex, but it looks the same as your. I tested the continuity of those trace, but they aren't so I don't understand how you can create a contact by simply putting your flex on it. Anyone know?

Hi @wernerpd777, yes, denatured alcohol can be used, but compared to an electronics-specific solvent you will have to repeat the operation several times in order to remove all residues.

Hi, we don’t use any glue. The liquid we apply with the brush on the pads and on the LCD traces is a bit of solvent, to clean any residues of the broken flat cable. Then, the new cable gets attached simply pressing with the soldering iron set at the correct temperature.

I'm guessing this would be a fix for a screen plug that comes loose so that the display gitters. Apparently this is a common problem, shame then on the makers for installing this poor design.
