The Owner's Manual I have recommended disconnecting the negative battery cable before replacing lights -- do you reckon it's safe to replace the lights without disconnecting the battery? Or is disconnecting the battery something that should be obvious to do?

In general it’s a good idea to disconnect the battery negative when working on car electrics. Reason is that if you touch a live wire to the body it will spark. However when changing a bulb it’s quite difficult to short a live to earth because the lights will be dead so long as the ignition is off. It’s up to you at the end of the day. It will give you an extra safety layer.
