Posting this around because I couldn't find anybody else online talking about it: After having a world of trouble with my Stihl MS-250 not starting, I decided to check the coil. It had spark, but I guess it wasn't strong enough to fire the plug. Forums have people that tell you to replace the coil in a case such as this, but a few say the coil seldom goes bad in a Stihl. My saw is not that old. Even so, I decided to pull the coil and replace it with one out of another older ms-250 I have. Then I noticed the gap between the old saw's coil and flywheel. It was not the same as the one on the problem saw. The non-starting unit had a wider gap. I got back online and found the correct gap setting should be 25 thousandth (can use a business card to set the gap). I decided to only remove the coil and clean it up, then reset the gap. I put everything back together and used a business card to set the gap. Then pulled the spark plug and made sure it was gaped at 25 thousandths too. The saw fired up and runs like new! It's hard to understand how that gap changed. It was never torn down till now, and it used to run very well for the longest time. Maybe buildup from the dust and oil lodged between the two components and caused it? But the torque screws holding it in place were very tight, and I can't see any reason for the coil to have slipped. But now happy... got my toy to working again.

Great video. Now, I have bought new/ owned my Stihl 031 AV saw since 1980 and have had some issues with it. It starts and runs strong for maybe 3 - 4 minutes while cutting, then just shuts down. Then it will not start until it cools down. Do you know of one of these electronic coil replacements for my saw. Thanks SD

Love how you skipped over installing the boot on the spring. That's what I came here to find out, the trick to it. How long did it take you to get it to go through that small hole on the boot?

Yeah, that's the part I wanted to see. I'm working on one now and the wire is so short (original, I didn't cut it) I can't get it back together.

So my spark plug rubber cap wont come off the high tension wire. I am at the point of breaking something so I guess I need to try to take the whole saw apart since I cant separate the rubber cap that snaps onto the spark plug from the wire. Since mine is all original stihl I guess I will break it if I keep forcing it. The rubber cap will not route through that small hole as it is way too big.

Those plug boots are a pitas. Everytime I tryin pull mine off my plug the boot comes off,but the spring stays on the plug and you cant get it lined back up. I usually get frustrated and just leave it off, wrapping a little black tape around the spring and wire. It works, but I always worry about a fire if fuel gets spilled.

Mostly what you show in this video is the back of your left hand which conceals completely what you are removing. Reposition your saw or you camera or both and do this video over again. Not much help.

Well, that’s the ghetto version. Most of these kits come with the spark plug boot already connected. Doing this job with a real kit is a lot more complicated.

I tuned in, Lee, to see how the wires lay in the saw. Getting them reinstalled is challenging. Your camera angle hides everything from view. All we can see are your hands moving. So the video is useless.

Nobody wants to have to strip the boot off, and those Chinese repro ignitions are shit. I just wasted hours with one. Yeah they're $13 on ebay but the one I got didn't work or put out intermittent spark. Take the saw apart to change the ignition. Pulling off the boot only causes headaches.😢
