The battery is 2.4volt Ni-mh. Rated for 1900mAH LSD. Manufacturer is HIGHPOWER technology co, LTD in Hong Kong. Model: HFR-50AAJY1900x2(B) I tried googling and found a few places online that sell it for under 10 bucks, but you could probably go to a local "battery plus bulbs" place to get one too. Mine controller after 2 years of heavy use was only working when plugged to USB. After disassembly I found that one cell failed and was giving 0.3V fully charged. The other one was healthy and was still giving almost perfect 1.2V. I've replaced them with Ladda AA batteries from Ikea. I've carefully cut battery pack wrap, used scalpel to break tabs welds and to separate thermistor, soldered old wiring to Laddas, wrapped in electric tape and assembled. Works like a charm. Why Nvidia uses regular AA rechargeable cells without possibility to change them like in XBox controller? This is so stupid and sad decision. BTW: Do not attempt to solder batteries if you have no experience. In bad scenario you will fry protecting circuits. In worst scenario it may explode in your face. If you do not have battery welder and do not know how to solder using acid then just buy cells with tabs welded on. BTW2: No, you can not glue in there regular dual AA battery case with springs. The mounting screws are too close to battery connectors. I had many cases of different manufacturers and every one of them was too long. Soldering / welding flat tabs seems to be the only option.

My original battery pack went bad. I replaced it twice with 2 new batteries and controller wont work weather plugged in or not. if I plug it in without the battery pack or use the old batter only the joy stick works. with the new battery pack controller disconnects. any help is appreciated.

Can't believe they use such an outdated technology, as NiMH is. No wonder they fail so quickly. Does anyone know if there is any Nvidia Shield Controller with a Li-Ion battery?

So check this out...apparently, the 1st Gen Shield controllers use Li-Ion! They are the WiFi model, not Bluetooth (which, from what I understand - is slightly better technology with regards to input latency? I'm not sure). Sadly, because their shape is so awkward and the 2nd Gen is so nice, I sold all of my 1st Gen controllers and kept 3 of the new style :( I wish I had done it the other way around, considering all of my 2nd Gen batteries are DYING. What were Nvidia thinking with this crap? NiMH in 2017??? Amazon. I rarely ever used mine. I used it more as a TV remote than a gaming remote and the brand new controller died within 2 months. I just ordered the batteries on Amazon.

Except they have a thermistor to prevent over charging - note the 3 wire connector. Batteries without the thermistor have a 2 wire connector.
