ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. I was all ready to tear out the Air Conditioning system in order to have room to replace the belt and pulleys. I would have really missed that A/C on hot days. Now, I can see your way is better. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. God has some milk and cookies waiting for you.

Thanks for the video I saw so many videos where they loosened the motor mount. I knew there had to be a better easier way!

FINALLY!!!! An excellent video about the belt tensioner on a freestar/wnidstar. NO OTHER videos on KZbin do as good a job as these guys do! My only complaint is I could not exactly see where to put the wrench to release tension. I don't mind having to pull a tire to get to it just so long as i can get to it! THANK YOU!

To release tension the pulley bolt is 13mm //// socket wrench are too wide chassis too close , just need a flat bar tool with 3/8 sq nub for very shallow socket or use a 13mm open/box end with a pipe to reach down there. But from bottom its easier if you have a friend up top, ready to slip it off the other idler. Swinging the tensioner 45- 90 deg should be enough. it will rotate only one obvious way to loosen.

@@josephbohme7917 Thank you! Unfortunately, the Freestar developed other expensive issues. It is in a junkyard now. I miss it. I enjoyed driving it because it was like it was designed for a big, tall, and disabled man.

Tip: Removing the holding pin in the tensioner assembly AFTER fitting the belt saves you from having to wrench the pulley out of the way when fitting it.

mine was different, with a 3.0, but same basic principles. tensioner uses a center bolt, much easier. and better to get to. did whole job in about 20 minutes. no prob. thanks for the tutorial

Yep got it off and replaced the bearing grease which was dry after 200K miles, Not won out enough wow. BUT when taken off the tensioner it unloads spring..There is a torx hidden behind pulleu and a 6mm hex screw on other side. How do you reset the spring. The pulley female thread Post/ hole has a half flat side to lock it somehow. Amswers???? Also the pullet bolt is reverse threading-- no one says that, but it is for a good reason. Clockwise too loosen. etc..

I have a 95 windstar and the belt puley is different to the one you show on the 99 wind star. What is the best way to retract the puley to its original possition. it is very hard to pull from under the van I already bent a bolt trying to put it back.

This is for a 3.8L engine. Tensioner in difficult place. 3.0L much easier as it is accessible from top side engine compartment near alternator.

UPDATE - well, I or more accurately my friend and I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner, serpentine belt and alternator. It is NOT as clean and easy as this video makes it look. 14 minute video, my butt. More like two or three hours. Everything in the video is absolutely accurate but, DAMN, you better have tiny hands and long fingers. Then, as I was driving home, the alternator light came on. I had a plug-in charging system monitor and my NEW (not remanufactured) alternator was putting out 14.0 to 14.2VDC. So, either my Ford Smart Charging System isn't sending a signal to turn off the light or maybe the PCM needs a few days to get used to the new alternator output. My old alternator would only put out 13.0VDC. From what I've been reading, as long as alternator is putting out 14.0VDC or better then there is nothing to worry about - I hope. Tomorrow, I'll double-check all the connections and clean up the ground wires that attach to the front radiator housing support. They looked pretty rusty and corroded.
