Excellent instructional video!! We just purchased a 03' Ford Windstar that needs a brake job all around and your video was so helpful. I couldn't have done it so well without your video. The camera work was excellent too. Very thorough except lubricating the brake shoes, a minor, but important detail to avoid squeaky brake shoes. Thanks a Million!!! Awesome presentation, i really learned a lot. The only thing you forgot was to put some silicon paste on the shoe support pads. if we don't put that silicone paste , the brakes shoes will make noise when they are working back and forth on that rough surface. good luck guys!!!

I spent 3 days trying to bleed my Ford Freestar. I finally found that with my Traction Control there is a pump. So you can not bleed if the pump is not working. The solution: Let the engine run during the whole procedure. You then get an incredible pression in the pipes. Oil is coming out for 1 foot long. I found this solution on internet and it was finally the right answer. So for Ford Freestar, Windstar and Aerostar and most Ford Traction Control brakes you need to have the engine running.

On many newer vehicles the brake bleeding procedure can get much more complicated and some are best taking to a repair shop. Make sure to research your specific vehicle thoroughly before opening the hydraulic portion of the brakes. Some vehicle require a scan tool to properly bleed the brakes as you cant get to some of the fluid without it.

thanks for the tips and videos . I am planning to do mines in the future

I've noticed something you forgot to do. As you was reassembling you forgot to clean and grease the pads on the backing plate where the shoes make contact with the backing plate. There are three for each shoe. That helps reduce unwanted brake noise.
@APDTY6 жыл бұрын
yes you are correct, the spots that the brake shoes ride on the backing plate should always be lubed to prevent that clicking sound

Thanks, you just saved me about $400.

The coil is straightforward, just time consuming. Disconnect the negative terminal, take off the wiper cowl (there are tons of sites out there telling you how to do this), and reach to the back of the engine. Disconnect the spark wires, from there only three bolts hold the ignition coil in place. If you are doing this job, I strongly recommend you think about replacing your spark plugs/wires since they involve the same steps anyway. Also think about knocking out your valve cover gaskets as well.

@HereIsGreatness what special tools did he use? Not trying to be snooty but do you mean the open ended wrench? The jack the jack stands or the cresent wrench? Watching this video I dont recall seeing any specialty tools though I may have blinked and missed something. If there was a specialty tool then good point, but im just not sure what your referencing.

Have a 2002 Windstar, rear shoe style brakes. Like the video but have a question. You talk about the "adjuster" 1. Are these brakes Self Adjusting ? 2. How does it self adjust?
@APDTY9 жыл бұрын
Yes if you have rear drum brakes then you will have a self adjuster that is suppose to keep the drum brakes adjusted out as the brake shoe material wears down. In other words as you use the brakes the brake pad or shoe material wears down and creates a larger space between the brake shoe and brake drum. The front brake calipers stay adjusted as they are constantly being pushed together towards the brake rotor. A built in self adjuster exist on most all drum brake setups and on a 2002 Ford Windstar they are suppose to adjust them selves as you apply the brakes sharply going forward or reverse. You can manually adjust the brakes if they don't adjust them selves by either accessing a hole in the backing plate or you can remove the wheel and brake drum and use a measuring gauge and adjust them out using the gauge. If the rear brakes are replaced or serviced, the rear adjuster should be removed, cleaned, lubricated and re-installed. Failure to service the adjuster during a normal brake service usually leads to is stopping to adjust automatically.

the tool he used to remove the retaining clip is fairly cheap at any automotive parts house, but i prefer a pair of slip jaw pliers easier to use than the specialty tool, incidentally worked in a garage for 2.5 years

depends on the exact year and model vehicle but in the rear you would have a brake line going into the wheel cylinder, a parking brake cable, and also possibly an ABS sensor wire.

hello can you make a video on how to replace a 02 windstar ignition coil.

we lube all the brake shoe to backing plate touch points, obviously not getting any lube on the friction material.

Hello, I get the ABS and Brake Light on. They turned off once when I changed the front rotors and brakes. Recently the lights came back and I assume that is time to change the rear brakes. I can't take off the drum tho. I slammed and slammed with the hammer but it does not come out. Any advice how to take it off and whether these two lights are actually indicator to change my rear brakes?
@hm34269 жыл бұрын
+L3gion3r I have a 2003 and those lights comes on. It does not bother me for I know all brakes are new.
@L3gion3r9 жыл бұрын
Heriberto R Montalvo I managed to change the rear brakes but the two lights turn on even more often now than usual, considering that I cleaned everything well.
@hm34269 жыл бұрын
+L3gion3r the lights that comes on, on my 2003 wind star are the ABS & emergency brake light. When I hit a pothole. My problem started when I slammed on the brakes real hard cause it did not want to stop at a red light. I'm thinking that since it was a real hard brake that it might had damage the sensor on the brakes reservoir. Any p0171 or p0174 on your van?
@L3gion3r9 жыл бұрын
Heriberto R Montalvo Yes, those 2 lights exactly I don't have a code reader. I took it to Ford once about that issue but the lights were inconsistent back then. All they did was to change the fuse harness which I believe is part of their recall program anyways. They said that there is nothing wrong with the brakes. Told me also that if I want to look further into this, they need to take the entire ABS apart. I need the car everyday so this isn't an option for me. I read somewhere that the issue is actually with the ABS box underneath the car. Due to high temps from the brakes and maybe vibrations, the cooling plate of the electrical board there messes up the solder.
@hm34269 жыл бұрын
+L3gion3r Knowing that your brakes are okay and the van brakes ok, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I will be changing the master cylinder and the brake switch on mine next spring. Is the only two parts that has to do with the brakes beside those rings on all four wheels and sensors. I just finished putting in 4 oxygen sensors and intake Isolator bolts bottom gaskets and top gasket. Now, the engine performs like new. What I have noticed is that those two lights don't come on that often any more. Only if I hit a big bump or pothole. As a last resource, try putting in a new master cylinder. Do you know how? Does you van vibrates when you put the brakes on? Mine does. Put everything new and it still vibrates.

now are the drums for just e break or all break?
@APDTY6 жыл бұрын
both, the rear drum brakes are used to stop the vehicle and also for parking, the rear brakes take 20-40% of all braking applied as the from takes the majority.

if it is wet, then you probably have leaking wheel cylinders which get all the brake dust to stick to it and look really dirty, so if that is the case, typically the fix is replace everything.

I would never do a crap job like that just put new parts right on the dirt and grime, why didn't you clean the rust off the back plate and the brake retainer all that should look like new when you put it back even take some time to paint it. I would paint it and clean anything that new parts touch. 300 dollars for crap work.
