WOW!! Even though this video is 6yrs old… It’s as helpful today as ever! My Boxster had developed a misfire and being a traditional ‘car guy’ I had no idea how to look at plugs and coil packs on a flat six engine! I was genuinely ready to get my wallet out (again) but this fantastic video saved the day! Well shot, direct and to the point without any BS, or silly background music, long intros or any of that other junk! Nicely done Ry! 👌

Thanks Ry, this doesn't look too hard, I'll proceed on my 2002 Boxster! For those wondering which plugs to buy, there's a number of resources on the web to figure that out of course. For my 2002 Boxster, it looks like the Bosch 7413 Spark Plug is correct, and I can currently get a set of 6 for about $30 through Amazon.

Well my plans are to put in a full touch screen double din radio. I am also buying drop in cup holders for the center console. There also may be a few interior panels that I want to replace eventually. OH and I want to replace the diff fluid. The problem is, the car is in amazing shape! It does not really need anything. If there is something specific you can looking for you can suggest it and I may be able to get around to it.

@hjon963 жыл бұрын
Good video but I would have to add on some tips for people. You should clean the surrounding area any time you have part of the engine exposed so you don't bring foreign contaminates. You should also check gap on spark plugs, apply anti seize to the threads of spark plugs, dialectic grease to the coil pack to ensure water tight connection.
@Rythecarguy3 жыл бұрын
Good tips, thanks!
@ok2853 Жыл бұрын
Anti seize is actually recommended against by porsche
@hjon96 Жыл бұрын
@ok2853 just googled it, I guess with modern spark plugs you don't need to do it anymore since they have a special coating on them. It used to be highly recommended so they don't seize in aluminum heads

I would use a magnetic sparkplug removal tool - special order - instead of the rubber grommet type. If the rubber comes out of the 5/8th plug tool, then how will you remove the rubber grommet from the plug? It can be VERY difficult to remove, even with the engine removed from the car.

I don't know the model of Boxster this is but it is not a 981. In my 2014 Cayman 981 you cannot even turn your wrist vertically to get access to the coils as the space between the sharp edge of the cats and frame is too narrow. It is such a pain. You can barely even see the driver's side front coil, let alone reach it. Great video to give you a good idea how this process unfolds.

Great video...thanks! Today First time...I changed my 00 Porsche Boxster spark plugs and found oil in two spark plug wells (rear passenger side). Any idea what cause this? Is this a serious issue? The coil/boot look fine, but not sure how oil got into the wells. Appreciate for any help...
@Rythecarguy7 жыл бұрын
+Yang, Nhia was the oil on the tip of the plug where it sparks?
@NIYA4247 жыл бұрын
No. The tip of the plug was dry. The oil was found in the well, but I cleaned it with a cloth. I just ordered two spark plug tubes for replacement. Issue might the o-rings.

Nikolas Yang what is the valve cover gasket and o ring gaskets that go around the plugs?
@skorpsaiyan23612 жыл бұрын
Wow much easier than I thought. My 2013 only has 29k miles, but maybe I should change the spark plugs since they are still original. No issues though drives so smooth, so I don't know if I should.
@Rythecarguy2 жыл бұрын
There are two camps. 1: Do them at the interval set out in the owners manual and 2) do them once you experience issues. There are good points to both. I am in camp 1 but I try to combine the job with other stuff.

You really should use a torque wrench. Those washers on the new spark plugs are crush washers and require a specific torque value. If the the washer doesn't fully crush per its intended design, you can damage the coil pack tubes and possibly get a missfire.
@rojacob95326 жыл бұрын
Frank Armstrong what's the torque spec to the spark plugs?
@DapwayBeatz4 жыл бұрын
I doubt that. If you don't tighten the plug enough to crush the washer you had never tightened the plug in the first place. I would never torque a sparkplug. At least with a regular ratchet you can feel the tension and be able to feel if the threads are going to let go. Spark plugs only ever need to be snug. Not tight. The gap matters most. All coils and wires are intended to seat fully without arcing. If the plug washer wasn't crushed, the boot would still be seated on the plug and the washer sits at the cylinder head and the actual electrode goes inside the cylinder heads so the electrode would never be able to arc over to the washer.

The old plugs were loose and so are the new ones. If you look at the old gasket, you'll see it's as thick as the new one. Means it was never really tight - no evidence of gasket crush. Always use lube on threads and both sides af gasket. Tight by feel or at least 25 pounds. Realize the spark plug is a cork for an explosion that occurs thousands of times per minute. It must seal. I could tell the old plug was loose by the ease of removal with such a short wrench. It'll never be tight with it either. The factory torque is to protect you from yourself and to protect the cylinder from empty headed.
