How to Replace the Staked In Front Sight on a 1991

Just grab it with a pair of vice grips and move the vice grips back and forth until the sight breaks off, the knock out the remaining stub with a punch and your all set.

Perhaps an addendum showing how to remove the first sight, then determining whether you have a thin or wide tenon and if you have to file the sight to fit, then how to mushroom just the bottom of the sight and how to make sure the top does not mushroom since that striking force transmits through to the top of the sight thanksi

Easiest way is to tape the top of the slide, put in a vice, grab the front sight with vice grips and gently rock side to side until it snaps. The remaining tenon usually comes off with a punch and hammer.

I made my own front sight tool to restake one of my 1911's. I had an old 1 9/16" open ended wrench (a 1 1/2" should also work); just ground down the outer edge to form a plateau slightly smaller than the rectangular post of the sight. I added a drop of red thread locker, then a single hit with a hand sledge hammer. Good video, thanks!

I've been dealing with some front sights lately that didn't play nice ,, sometimes a 3lb hammer was involved ..Then i went to change the Sight on my new ruger gp 100 ,,, push in a spring loaded pin at the business end of the revolver lift out sight , set in new sight release pin ...My God what a blessing compared to some sights i've changed

You basically have to file inside and grasp the old sight and twist pull,snap it off. It's softer than the slide itself

I have to stake a front sight and I'll probably do this less than 3 times in the rest of my life. I checked out methods and tools online and discovered a tool called the Strobel 1911 front sight removal and installation tool. I found that the hammering type staking tool is $50 at Brownells while the Strobel non-impact type staking tool is $76 at Midway, USA. Should I hammer on my Gold Cup or just turn a few bolts? I looked for used staking tools online at the normal places, but everyone is holding on to the Strobel after using it. Buy once, cry once... Strobel it is.

How about making a Delta with a match barrel. You could also offer it with Heine ledge sights or Gold Cup adjustable sights instead of the slanted Novak rear sights.

Be careful, you can rupture some night sights, making them useless. According to trijicon it is pretty common.

Come on guys you want to know how to remove the sight? Watch the video and listen, he shows you how to install it. He actually at around at around 5 mins he starts describing how to file the staked end and at 530 he tells you what not to do…so answer is file the sight and then a once you have a enough off the sight filed( not the inside of the slide) it will fall out as always a punch and hammer will make your lives easier, that being said, if you didn’t get this by watching the video you probably should just pay a smith to do it because just because you know how to do it doesn’t mean you can actually do it correctly, 1911’s are fitted and are not AR-15, now you why good ones are expensive, and can figure out why less expensive ones are not always good or should we say not custom fitted they will shoot sometimes very well but a fitted one will be NICE.

Colt actually had some pistols that were called model 1991’s. Stamped it in big ass numbers on the slide. Probably the most ugly rollmarks they ever made but it is a real thing
