Suggestion: If your replacement gear is too tight, sand material off the metal base of the new gear until it runs smoothly. Details: I got the cheap Chinese replacement gear (white plastic with a hex set screw). It was extremely tight and very notchy feeling when turning the hand wheel. It was binding so hard that the motor could not overcome the resistance. I compared the overall height of the new gear with the original gear. The new gear was too tall. I resolved the problem by sanding off the base of the metal gear housing until the old and new gears were the same overall height. (Thus adjusting the bevel gear engagement). I had to sand off quite a bit of material. I’m sure I didn’t get it exactly flat but I think the longitudinal loads are not significant.

Thank you, Paul. Somewhere in these 600+ comments is one similar to yours, but without the detail. I appreciate you sharing your experience on my video. I've pinned your comment to the top so other viewers will see it first, hopefully before they buy a gear, and know to watch out for that tall metal base. Thanks for saving your machine and take care.

I am having this exact same problem with the new gear that I bought. It is very tight and feels notchy when you turn the hand wheel, just like you said. The motor can't turn hard enough to actual get the gears to move. I appreciate you pinning this comment to the top and also thank you for telling us about your experience.

@@stealthyninja11 Welcome, and thanks again to Paul for sharing his experience. Apparently, another batch of "too tall" gears is being sold. I believe they are actually a different part number than 155819 and are made for a different model/models. The teeth and the base are separate part numbers and I think a factory is going by the teeth part number when selling to vendors on eBay and Amazon, etc. I've had another viewer email me that he had to use a grinder to lower the height of the metal base to match the original height of the old gear. The fix works b/c the teeth are the same as the old gear.

I had the same problem with the same cheap gear. I'm sending it back to get a better brand. Also, the cheap gear hex screw is much smaller than the original and I don't feel like it will tighten down as it should. I would prefer the flat screwdriver head. My advice, don't buy the cheap china gear.

I too applaud the design, engineering, and manufacturing peoples who made these wonderful machine. Slide rules and metal lathes in an age before computerized manufacturing. If you want a paying hobby, just advertise that you will replace those gears and you could be a busy guy, based on the dozens of emails and comment I get each week about them. I see the number of views on the video is appoaching 30K now. I never imagined that many but knew many people would be interested that have the dozen or so models with that weak gear. The machines themselves are good, strong, and versatile. With the new gear they can go a few more decades I think. Thanks again and be safe.

Right now I'm buying online, from thrift stores, which is rewarding. I am an engineer by training, so mechanically these aren't very complex machines and relatively easy to fix. I'm totally impressed. I was told my sewing machine repair of replacing the hook gear would be over $400 - so I bought my same machine on ebay, which is not in great shape (buyer beware!). What's cool is that I have spent the whole day taking both machines apart to understand what was not happening on my old machine. I've spent hours and this video help! Now, dear Lord, I've got to put them back together! No repairs, but a good education and appreciation of how a sewing machine works!

Andy, I was astonished that I watched your entire 2hr video. But the detail, asides and diversions gave me confidence to tackle the job. Got the part from Singer UK, fitted it but could not set the timing because none of my keys would fit the hex screws. Then I had a thought, I bought the machine as a birthday present for my then fiance in 1973 and at that time we measured in inches. So I got a 3/32 hex key for about 20cents + postage and hey presto. Got the machine working in time for my wife to make face masks for the family and neighbours. Thanks a lot.

When we got it open we saw the failed gear. With your help and a pliers with a very long needle nose, and the grace of God, we got it up and running. This video is fantastic! While using my Mom's 1969 high school graduation gift Singer Stylist 466 machine the timing slipped, the needle popped and I was at a standstill, and my Mom was heartbroken. Fearlessly, I opened it up to find the problem and saw the broken teeth. A quick google search found this video and Amazon had the part for $10. During the process of repairing, I found another broken top gear floating around inside(!!!), presumably from a previous repair by a shoddy shop worker. Thank you for your patience and expertise!

Thanks so much for this video! I was emptying out my storage, and found this model 457 in what I thought was an empty sewing machine table. I plugged it in, and the motor turns, but nothing else. The top gear was in pieces, so I started with that. It took everything I had to get it out, and I finally had to use a punch (with a rag) to tap it free. I just ordered Krud Kutter, and I guess I'll have to take the rest of the machine apart to figure out why nothing moves, but I think that it's frozen because it must have been sitting for 40 years or so. (Someone gave it to me about 7 years ago). This is the first time I've worked on anything newer than a 1920 National Electric machine, lol. Everything looks upside down. I'm off to watch some more of your videos now. This machine is being gifted to a woman with 4 young girls who wants to start making at least some of their clothes, so you're videos are helping people in more ways than one!
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 14 күн бұрын
It is very common for an old machine to be frozen. It is usually because of dried oil in the parts. Before I dismantle it I will oil it properly according to the manual (you can read and/or download it here: www.scribd.com/document/720859001/Singer-457-Sewing-Machine-Instruction-Manual) Often that is all it needs, a good oiling and some time to let it seep into the parts. If more is needed I will heat all those metal parts with a hairdryer. That can soften the dried oil and let fresh oil into the spaces. Thanks for helping a young mom. That machine is very nice for making clothing, strong & versatile. Good luck.

@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks again! It's all lubed up with Tri-flow, and I'll wait until morning to see whether I need to use the blow dryer or not. Luckily, I was an auto mechanic before my spinal injury, so with your help, I'll get this "new" machine all figured out.

So, just last month I saw this video for the first time and your instructions were so clear I decided to give it a try.When I first opened the top, I saw the gear (black teeth) in pieces I was happy because I felt that with time I could install a new one, I ordered the part and because of the CoronaVirus 19 it took some time, but last week I installed the new one and my wife was so happy to use this machine again, it was a gift to her from one of my co-worker's wife, immediately after she found out my wife was a seamstress from El Salvador and she would use it properly, and she did ! @@andytubesewing1953 The gear replacement went SO smoothly! THANK YOU! I just have 2 questions. First the small hole to oil the bearing right next to the face plate is not on my machine. Is there another way to oil the bearing? Second, even though the timing and everything is working thread wise, the fabric isn't pulling through. Is there a way to adjust the feed dogs? or do you think they simply need to be replaced? When placing my hand on the needle plate they barely touch the surface, but when I removed them, they seem to have enough life left in the teeth. Any ideas? Thanks in advance :)

Andy - Great video! Really helpful tips, and great explanations. IMPORTANT NOTE: When setting the timing, it is critical that the needle is on the UPSTROKE when you are stopping at the timing mark. If you the needle is on the downstroke, and you go through the timing process, the needle will not raise in time and will hit the rotating bobbin mechanism --this will snap off the needle. Fortunately, I rotated the hand wheel while watching the mechanism - and was able to catch this before any damage was done. NOTE 2: Singer has a PDF of the 457 machine on its website - you can use this to find all the oiling locations underneath, at the end, and on top of the machine. Finally, great advice about not putting gear grease or oil on the vertical/horizontal shaft gear teeth. I cleaned off all the grease/goop from prior users. NOTE 3: I ordered Singer Machine Oil to lubricate the machine, but it doesn't have a long thin tube to get to all the key locations. I used a bendable straw, cut one end to a point and poured a little oil down the straw. The pointed end allowed me to direct where the oil went. NOTE 4: I also ordered Singer "lubricant" in a 0.5 oz. tube which I thought was for the horizontal/vertical gears - BUT you specifically said those gears are not to be lubricated and that the gear lube was only for the worm gear. I used my straw to lubricate the base of the vertical shaft gear base where it meets the bushing. - Thank you Andy!!!

Thank you, Bill, and thanks for sharing all the good tips for working on and lubricating this model 457. Important Note: Yes, it is very critical that the needle bar is on the upstroke when setting the lower timing mark for the needlepoint to hook point timing. I covered this @ 1:46:30 in the video, as well as showing it in the close-up slide @ 1:47:39. It's good you bring attention to it like this and I'll pin your comment to the top in the hopes others will see your notes. Note 2: here is the link Bill mentions for downloading the free copy of the Instruction Manual from Singer; www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 The lubrication Instructions start on page 53 of the manual. Note 3: now that is a creative solution for pin-point accuracy when oiling. It's frustrating without some way to get the oil into the little ports b/c it seems more oil gets on the outside than on the inside parts. Nicely done. Note 4: Yes, yes, yes, greasing the worm gear is the way to go, that and oiling the base of the gear hub on the upright. Many other Singer Models have an exterior oil port for oiling the bushing under that gear, but on a dozen models similar to this 457 they did not provide a port. It's no surprise to me that those same models are notorious for top gear failure. Thanks for watching my channel, Bill, and sharing such a thoughtful and thorough comment. Take care. ✨

@@andytubesewing1953 I have to just say -- I also appreciate how you respond to everyone. It is so dignified and humane. We need more of that. I like fixing things, especially older things because sometimes they were better made and just a tweak here or there can keep them going. Newer machines with all their plastic, need I say more? And not having to throw yet one more thing on the trash pile, I feel like I am helping out just a bit. I will also tell you my mom took this machine to get fixed by a professional -- I saw that the belt was replaced and a bobbin holder -- but the guy never even found the gear and just declared it fixed, which course it wasn't. Andy to the rescue!! And one last thing -- after I changed the gear -- one of the belts wasn't moving -- well, guess what? There is an Andy video for that too. Fantastic, and thanks for saving the machine. 🙏It's such a nice model and based on the 347 which does have a steel gear. The 457 is an "updated" version but they went with a plastic gear. To be fair, the plastic gear lasted about 30 years in some cases. Poor model 457 machines have been tossed for years now after the gear started failing. Such a shame. When you see those nice steel pulleys and cogged timing belt it screams smooth power, but it comes down that vertical shaft from the dumb plastic gear. It is typical to find a 457K in good condition but it sounds like you found an extra clean one. No problem to sew quilts with it. If it fits under the presser foot it will probably sew it. A very nice metal machine that can be portable or mounted in a SInger Cabinet which many quilters prefer. I know you can replace that gear. Best of luck and happy quilting.

@@andytubesewing1953 3 years back I was gifted a Singer Stylist 7258. I've been teaching myself quilting and have made 7 quilts various sizes. The issue (although I love this Singer) is that it's has very little room to sew longer fabrics straight, esp. if you try a higher speed on it. The higher speed sends the fabric off course and misses nice/neat seams. As many of us know, it takes 2-3+ times longer to undo a bad seam. 2 weeks back, I'd mentioned for my birthday how much I'd LOVE to have a machine that could sew a tad faster and with less mistakes.... The Universe listened, and sitting on top of the trash where hubby works was this 457. She looks like she's been used maybe 1 month!? I said, "Are you serious!?" Then plugged her in; motor, light bulb, foot press all appear brand new! With the exception of the busted plastic gear and the 4 foot-pads about to crumble due to age, I think it's exactly what I'm looking for. SO, I did get the Vertical top gear, 1 motor belt, 1 Timing Belt, some Tri-flo oil & 4 new foot cushions.... I'll be up and running soon ~ SO EXCITED! Again, thanks much!

You have been a tremendous help to many people. Thanks!!

When the gear starts to break apart, often the teeth will chip off and the machine runs "rough" as the gear starts slipping. The hook to needle timing can get off and start having skipped stitches. The needle can strike the hook. The hook can stop turning all together. On some machines the feed dog will stop moving. During all this the needle bar will still go up and down and the take-up lever still functions. You don't see it, but the timing belt starts turning erratically or stops altogether. If you remove the bed plate (think oil pan) you often find pieces of the broken gear on the bottom of the machine. If the gear goes out slowly the symptoms seem intermittent. If the gear fails quickly (often the case) the hook just stops turning right in the middle of a seam. Most of the machnes this happens to are in the 40 to 50 YO range and kept sewing long after the company was sold. Thanks for watching my channel. Take care.

I'm glad the video was helpful to you, and thanks for saving your 247. That model we call a "flat-top" and Singers' solution to the broken gear involved almost a total disassembly of the parts; about a 13 step process each way. I have about a dozen pictures of the flattop models, and others, that viewers made holes or cut the metal frames for access to the gear. It's a clever solution. You are the first one to explain to me about using a cap for your access hole. Now that is a great idea and good for preventing dust, etc. from entering into the machine. A salute to you for that idea. Until now, no one has posted a video of what/how they solved their problem, so I encourage you to do that. A short video explaining how you went about it could help others with the same problem. You can post videos to your own KZbin channel. Here is Google's help page explaining how to do that if you've never tried: support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop&hl=en Here is a nice 4-minute video with 1.5 million views showing the step-by-step process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWpY3Sde7h_d9k Thanks for sharing your idea on my channel and take care.

Hi Andy, in the midst of the pandemic, my wife has been making masks and scrub bags. In the middle of this the pinion stripped on her main 457. She is today back using it again thanks to your tutorial so you have played your part in the UK too! I couldn't get a Singer pinion and had to source from China. The pinions I got were slightly out of tolerance and the mesh was too tight- disaster! I ground a few thou off the bottom of the pinion and ground flat and it all works! I may replace with a genuine part when I can get one. Cheers from the UK!

Oh, nicely done, sir. Thanks for saving that machine! I have heard from people here in the US that a maker of that gear sells them with the metal base a little tall and others have had to grind them down a little. I would replace it when you can. They are cheap and not as hard to change as the vertical gear on the arm shaft so don't take a chance of harming that one. The 457K was made in the UK but I was still surprised at the number of comments and emails from "over the pond" when I started posting videos of the model. It's all good and I thank you for taking time to comment.

Repaired a Singer L47 and 457 thanks to this video. For the UK people here, you'll need an IMPERIAL sized allan key set to loosen the timing bolt on the 457 (£4 from Halfords). For the L47 or 247, use a screwdriver bit held at 90 degrees with plyrs to get the old gear screw loose without complicated disassembly. As I had no luck finding 247 gears in the UK (457 are easy to find) I can also confirm the chinese seller on ebay with 247 gears are selling the correct size part, you just have to wait 2 weeks

Picked-up a 477 today at Salvation Army. It has the exact problem but working to get it corrected. Nice to have the reference of your video to help along with the repair - thanks for taking the time to post the information. I'm going to look around to see if these gears are available in metal ... maybe I can get my husband to machine them for me. :) Even with this repair I'd much prefer an older machine than the junk they sell now. These seemingly insignificant 2 plastic gears could be the smoking gun that took Singer down from their hay-day. How unfortunate.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 5 жыл бұрын
Welcome. IMO, it was not plastic gears that caused the downfall of Singer, but the much cheaper machines from Japan and then Taiwan. As costs went up after WWll the price of an all-metal Singer was more than most people wanted to spend. My understanding is that Singer was sold to a Japanese investor around 1984. The plastic gears should last 25 years or more if not exposed to oil. You can download a 75-page pdf copy of the Original Singer Instruction Manual for Model 477 for free here: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/01c62c901c15f3202fc3263cd76cd27c3bc2f688_0.pdf Since you will be working on your machine you may find a copy of the 5-page parts diagram with numbers to be helpful. And if it is just too tight, put some vise grips on the shank of the screwdriver to use as a handle to turn the screwdriver with. Just this last week the timing went out on our machine, needle hitting metal. Found the top gear fine on one side and the teeth kind of mushy like old rubber on the other. No way for the gear on the horizontal shaft to engage it. No need for me to speed up the video, I paused it several times to look at our machine. I find it odd that the screw on the left goes into a speed nut rather than have the body of the machine tapped like it is for all the others. Our machine is in a cabinet, seems I might need my wife to hold the vertical shaft pulley while I put on the top gear, it is her machine so she can help ;). Our 457 doesn't have the top oil hole and has a plastic pulley on the bottom of the shaft. Part on order from Amazon. Amazing that these 45+ year old machines are still repairable. Happy you found the video. I've never replaced the gear while the machine was in a cabinet. Teamwork should do it though. My wife has helped me several times and maintains her 301A & 403A machines. I know you guys will be fine and back to sewing quickly. Thanks for the great comment 🙏

Andy, your videos are the very best, I was sewing last night with my 457 and it was running great but then no stitches, they I noticed that the bobbin wasn't turning any more, got up this morning and I've been following you video for the gear issue and yes, the gear is missing so many teeth (machine would sew for a bit and hit a place with missing teeth), I having trouble getting the little set screw to loosen. Thank you so much for all you do for all of us!!!!

A classic experience when the gear fails. I'm glad you found the video, Susan. Set screws can be difficult. Penetrating oil, heat from a hairdryer, tapping on the screwdriver while turning can help sometimes. I've been using a new (to me) tool called an IMPACT DRIVER that accepts screwdriver bits, 1/4" like I use, and you hold the driver into the screw and hit the other end. This causes a quick, hard, short twist and breaks free the set screw, or other screw. SOmething like this: www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W2503-Impact-Extractor/dp/B00MXFFPVY

Hi Andy and selador11, I got the gear off of the machine about 10 minutes ago!!!! I found this very old, beat up Stanley Screw Driver (made in the USA) and I had used Krud Kutter during the day today and that screw driver is such a mess (probably used it to open paint cans over the years) it's the only one I hadn't tried. I am so HAPPY, just waiting for the new one to come in the mail. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Sue

@@andytubesewing1953The machine was imported from Ingland in 1973 and I just ordered the parts from ebay. What kind of oil do you use or will WD40 do the job? Thank you.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 3 жыл бұрын
@@manueljorgebernardessilvap9358 Please do not use WD40 for oiling the machine. Ok to use to loosen a stuck screw. Sewing Machine Oil is good to use and has been used for 100 years with great success. Many of us use TriFlow Oil www.triflowlubricants.com/product/tri-flow-superior-lubricant-drip-bottle/ We think (hope) that the PTFE in the oil will prevent wear to metal parts. I do not put oil on any plastic part. I do not lubricate the plastic gears, but some people feel the need to grease the plastic gears. If you want to do that, use an oil that is known to be safe for plastics. www.triflowlubricants.com/product/tri-flow-synthetic-grease/ Synthetic Grease. Older style grease that is hydrocarbon-based can harm the plastic. Good Luck.

I watched this video because it popped up, I thought it was entertaining. I watched all the 401 videos, got mine running beautifully. Well, I am pretty glad I saw this, I'm now working on a Kenmore 1750 that belonged to my mother, guess I will refrain from getting oil or grease on it's one plastic gear!!!
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 4 жыл бұрын
I just don't put grease on a plastic gear UNLESS it interfaces with a metal gear, like the handwheel gear on your 401A or a plastic cmstack gear to the metal worm gear on the arm shaft. On those I use the TriFlow clear synthetic grease which is listed a "safe" for most plastics. Wait, Kenmore? What? Oh, it was free right? or you found it in a dumpster, right? Just kidding; Kenmore made some very nice, strong models over the years.
