While you're in there, check the large capacitors by the CPU, these also tend to go bad. On the 1.0 and 1.1 boards, re-flow the solder on the power connector on the power supply board.

Can you explain why it’s necessary to replace the super cap, instead of just removing it altogether? I mean, the cap isn’t going to power the RTC for all that long, especially with XBox’s that are in storage! So presumably still works fine without it, and for a network connected Xbox the time would just be NTP updated anyway?

Depends on if they’re bulging or not and impacting performance. The clock capacitor I’ve heard is the one that causes the most problems. You can replace it just fine, but it shouldn't be needed unless it won't keep time when disconnected from AC power. Be aware that, unlike what @user-yv4ey6yy6s says, the capacitor is *required* for the system to even start, so leaving it out as one could do with the v1.0 - v1.5 Xboxes is not an option. If you have trouble finding it, be aware Microsoft moved it with the 1.6 motherboard revision, and it is now located between the Xyclops chip and the IDE port.

You don't actually need to replace the capacitor. On top of my head, I can only think of 3-4 games out of 1000 that make use of the clock. And you can adjust it when you play them. The clock will still remember the correct day and hours as long as you leave the console plugged. One example is in Simpsons Hit n Run, the menu living room screen changes if it's halloween or christmas day. It doesn't really effect the game in any way but it's a cool immersion feature.
