Thank you for sharing this. This is an environmental issue. We are throwing perfectly working devices into the landfill when they simply could be used again if we just replace the battery. I don't have all this equipment and expertise. I don't intend to do it myself. But if the battery in my headphones is not working as expected anymore, then I know that this is an option now. I'll just go to my local repair technician and ask them if they can do something like this.

Cheap soldering irons can be picked up for peanuts these days, and basic soldering isn't really a very hard skill to learn. I'd recommend anyone who's even the remotest bit interested in trying to fix their own electronics to just pick one up (and a small roll of lead based flux core solder*) and giving it a go. The first time you use it to reconnect or replace a broken wire rather than taking a device to a repair centre, the iron and solder will have paid for itself. It's just one more simple to learn skill that will save you money, AND give you a real world sense of achievement (Something sadly lacking in many peoples modern way of life). You'd be amazed at how many quite expensive pieces of electronic equipment have soldered in batteries these days (Most laptops now haven't even got "User replaceable" battery packs), so being able to assemble and replace custom battery packs is going to become a more and more usefull skill to have. (* A law was passed in several counties a while ago outlawing the use of lead based solder in manufacturing or commercial repairs. Because of this, lead free solder was developed, but it's horrible to use and isn't particularly beginner friendly. Lead based is the only way to go for a learner)

@@Reman1975Was that ROHS? In 2006-07, I worked in a factory that made printed circuit boards, but on the office end of things. My brothers worked in printing and in plating. I remember everyone who worked the HASL machine and the people who soldered components *despised* the lead-free product, and there were quite a few months of figuring out how to make boards come out decently with it.
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 9 ай бұрын
@@tropezando I've tried several different brands of lead free solder, and I've yet to find one that isn't truly awful stuff to use. Regardless of what additional fluxes I've tried, the stuff doesn't want to flow into joints like leaded stuff does. With practice you can get functional solder joints with lead free stuff, but it's significantly harder to get a professional looking result using it. I find myself lingering on every solder joint as I try to get it to "look right", but eventually the only criteria is "Is it holding the component securely? Is it conducting electric? Then it's soldered well enough !". If you're doing soldering work commercially, then UK law says you need to be using lead free solder, but for repairing/modifying/building your own stuff it's still perfectly legal to use leaded. It's easier to learn, and you can do the joints quicker with better results, so for hobby use, it's leaded every time for me now.

@@Mark-nw6lh in theory yes, as long as you never use the circuit to charge those batteries. You'd have to charge them separately. Charging them with a circuit that charges Li-Ion batteries from USB would blow them up (not just because of the voltage but because of the mismatched charging protocol). Great video. I just swapped the lithium battery in a set of BT300 headphones (Big Lots, $20). They wouldn't charge, the LED light wouldn't even turn on. After opening them up as you describe at :41, the rest was easy. The old battery was "puffy," so it was definitely dead. I'm not comfortable soldering on the circuit board, so I just cut and stripped the wires to solder them to the new battery wires. A little electrical tape, and tucked it all in. Back in service! The battery was HL602025 3.7V, (might also be PL602025 or LP602025). Amazon had a "Liter Energy Battery 3.7V Lipo Battery 300mAh Rechargeable Lithium ion Polymer Battery 702025 Lithium Polymer ion Battery", $9.99, next day delivery.

This video is brilliant. Straight to the point and clear. it gave me hope to fix the headphones I use for work. I opened the case to check the voltage on the battery and noticed this yellowish gum, it actually looks like dried glue, right where the battery was soldered to the PCB. I did some research and concluded it's not GS or RTV silicone adhesive because it's definitely yellow and slightly translucent, instead of white and opaque. What do you think it is, and how would you recommend trying to remove it without damaging the board? Thank you for your help.

Should've mentioned to use batteries with a built-in protection PCB (like the example ones you show have, where the wires come from). Bare Li-Ion or even Li-Po cells will overcharge and go boom. Otherwise good video though. @@ElectronicsComputers Thanks! I upgraded the battery in my Bluedio F2 headphones which I suspect was 400mah(it had no markings or a protection circuit) and factory spec 16h playback time to a larger 800mah battery from Cellevia. I have been using the headphones for 28h with no sign of them dying. More autonomy means less charge cycles which is really great. The old factory cell was swollen and smelled like bubblegum which suggests there was leakage going on due to the fact it had no overcharge protection and I regularly left them to charge overnight thinking there were cut-off circuits in place. So...cheap implementation from Bluedio for such a great pair of headphones. Thank you for the great information! Hi, great post. And I did the same thing on my SONY DR BT-50 earphone just recently. However, I am not quite sure on the part about voltage charger not concerned with mAh of the battery chosen for replacement. If mAh is irrelevant and only the nominal 3.7-V charging input matters (including its size, of course), then I was wasting my time seeking high and low for the replacement the same as the original one. Any clarifications are greatly appreciated. BTW, the my chosen replacement with the same mAh as the original SONY one ain't cheap.... 😫

All headphones during charging usually draw 500mA to 1 amp so even if you connect 2A charger it's not gonna speed up the process. If you install a higher capacity battery it will charge longer and vice versa. That's all the difference here.

Thanks for the video! I am a bit confused with the batteries... is it ok to use a "LiPo" battery? I mean, the links you provided says "lithium polymer lipo li ion" but im confused with the Li Ion and LiPo... Can i use the same charger or do i need a special charger for the "LiPo" battery? My headphones didnt come with a charger, so i use the same as my phone, but the battery is the same as the one you install but mine is 500mah also 1.85wh, should i search for one with this too?

Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries are absolutely interchangeability.
@runtissmodlab1492
@runtissmodlab1492 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsComputers you can use similar circuits but they do use different charge voltage, low voltage, and sometimes nominal voltage. Internally, lipo and li-ion batteries are completely different. In your video you said that these are "li-ion pouch cells" but they are actually lipos that have li-ion in the name to attract attention. just false advertising. if it were li-ion that size battery would be about 5-10x more mah than what you are using. Just clearing up some confusion.

@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 8 ай бұрын
There's no need to twist anything. Simply grab the edge of the earpad on the side where it is attached to the speaker cover and gently pull. Work your way around until it is completely unfastened from the cover. Once done, you'll see four screws; remove them, and you'll get access to the battery and PCB.
