Just want to say a big thank you. I just finished changing my stem seals today after following your diy instructions. I couldn't use the cable tie tip because my springs were too small to compress with just cable ties so I used a spring compressor to do that but I loved your tip about the magnetic socket and metal mallet. It worked beautifully. Thanks :) tell you what though, I have a D15 and changing 16 seals is so time consuming!

Good tutorial - I used I few times - First, use "Sintetic" rope like him - Don't leave dirt and it's more difficult to have a knot - Then the part of the zip ties, buy good ones or just buy a "Valve spring compressor" it's a cheap tool and very effective for hard springs.- Move the piston with the hand, and then you can put it in first Gear, to prevent go down again, when you are working in the valves doing force down.- When you finish, move the piston and then remove the rope.- Then always check the timing usually it's not going to move because you don't remove the belt, but it's double-check and VERY important, check the valve clearance, after finish in d16y8 are for example 0.20 mm for intake and 0.25 for exhaust.- If everything it's fine, just enjoy!

Actual genious, I have all the right kit to do this in situ in work in minutes, but for your average fellow doing this on the driveway this saves the cost of all those tools . Bit more time consuming but a productive way to spend a lazy afternoon and save some dough, nice one. And no need to disturb the timing belt. Or inlet exhaust and head gaskets.

THE ROPE IS USED TO HOLD THE VALVES UP IN THE HEAD. YOUR TAKING THE RETAINERS AND SPRINGS OFF TO GET TO THE SEALS WITHOUT THE ROPE THE VALVES WOULD DROP INTO THE CLYNDER. YOU DO ALL 4 VALVES WITH IT IN THE CLYNDER THEN REMOVE THE ROPE AND USE IT AGAIN IN THE NEXT ONE! PEOPLE STOP ASKING WHATS THE ROPE FOR!

Use security glasses and a spring compressor tool for 10$. Valve springs are tipically rated from 200 to 300 lbs, and you don't want that exploding on your face when cutting a zip tie...

He feed it down into the cylinder when the cylinder was at BDC, he then cranked it up to TDC which compressed the rope into the valves, he did this so the valve doesn't fall when he removes the valve spring keepers and retainers.

Doing this to mine rn and didn't have to worry about the string part, just turned the cylinders I was working on to TDC and the pistons caught the valves from falling

i wouldnt have believed the cable tie spring compression trick until i saw it. might i suggest that it is important to ensure the valve spring is at the top of the valve stem so those little collets/retainers dont go into orbit when you cut the cable ties.

No you turn the engine by hand on the crank no need to have it in gear. And about 1meter of ropes enough tie a big knot in it for 2 reasons 1 you know how much you feed in and 2nd so it doesn't fall into the engine.
@abdulakhtar858610 жыл бұрын
Why did you put rope into the cylinder ? whats that to prevent ? planning on doing my own stem seals this has helped alot but mines a B16A2 DOHC so it will be slightly different just been looking at a few videos to help build knowledge lol
@jasonbentley28199 жыл бұрын
+Abdul Akhtar When you put the rope into the cylinder, it will coil up so when you bring the piston to the top, it stops the valves falling down into the cylinder (:
@richardgordon33977 жыл бұрын
another way of doing it without rope is to use a air compressor and fitting that that threads into the spark plug hole and add air to about 10-15 psi ( you dont need a whole lot , don"t use all125 psi ) the air will hold the valves from moving ..they can't the pressure holds them up , and only release pressure after the valve spring has been fully reinstalled with retaining clip
@billdougan40225 жыл бұрын

If your valve keepers are not perfectly in place when you cut those zip ties the spring could launch into your face and hurt you bad! That's why it's safer to use the right tool (spring compressor) and slowly release the tension. Just trying to keep a few more working eyes in the world lol.

Crank so the cylinder your about to do is a bottom dead center feed the rope in about a meter, then crank it back round by hand not the starter untill you feel resistance just give it a little bit more just to make sure its tight then your good to start removing the valve springs. Once completed turn the engine back and pull the rope out. Hope this helps

I have a 2002 Altima 2.5 and its consuming oil like crazy. I replaced the valve cover and gasket with a new OE Nissan cover. The spark plug well had oil accumulating before the cover change. all nice and dry now. Have you ever heard of changing the valve guide seals with the head on? The car is NOT smoking and I think the oil is coming from an exhaust valve guide which is slamming the oil into the exhaust...unburned and has fried the catalytic converter. I do not want to replace the converter until I have the oil leak (valve guide seals) fixed. Do you know if the QR25 motor valve guide seals would/could be done this way?
