Thanks for the video. Concerning your comment about not using a drill. I'm going to be replacing our shutters in a few weeks. What I plan on doing is using a power drill to screw in the screws until they 1/2"-1" from the shutter, THEN hand tighten. This saves you some time vs. hand screwing all the way.

Thanks so much for the detail on the screws instead of the plastic anchors. Builder used the plastic anchors and my shutters started coming off in a couple of years. It is very expensive to mount these shutters on my 3 story building (almost $500 plus). The key is to have good anchors. I was looking for an alternative anchor and you solved my problem. Great job!! Much thanks.

This is the way to do it. My shutters were using those plastic push in plugs that just use friction to hold them up. They came down at least once a year when there were high winds. Done with it. This time I'm going with anchors and panhead screws like you did. I am going to use everbilt black plastic screw caps on them to make it look finished.

How can I reuse the old holes? I have the shutters in perfect condition but the screws are broken, I would have to use the same holes for new screws but I fear they won’t fit coz the holes are wider now. Any suggestions? The glue you used would fill them and strong enough to hold new screws?

Great video, any reason you didn’t reuse old holes? Im going to be replacing some of my old shutters and was hoping to find the best way to reuse old holes. Any suggestions? Or just use top 2 like you did and redrill out the other 4? Thanks 😊

Hey Bo, the new shutters were a bit longer and that is why I needed to drill those bottom holes. Best of luck!

You can use the same plastic expansion anchors in the existing hole. Just realize that every time you go in and out of a hole it gets bigger so you may need a bigger anchor. He was using vinyl shutters so he probably wanted the fasteners to look symmetric and towards the ends. (Not to mention the concern of an existing hole getting bigger after removal as mentioned above.) so he drilled some new ones. If you are using wood shutters (you can build your own custom board-and-batten style pretty easy), then you can use the existing holes, and put the holes anywhere, countersink them, and calk and paint the holes so you dont see the screwheads. Good luck!

I just installed the exact same shutters. The fasteners that come with the shutters are super strong. I had to take one off because I messed up and I couldnt. Ended up drilling it out. Luckly the kit comes with one extra fastener
@EverydayHomeRepairs4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if those plugs grab on to the hole tight they can be tough to remove. If you need any extra plugs the big box stores usually also have small packs you can buy. Way to knock out the project 👍

Is a hammer drill the same as an impact driver?
@EverydayHomeRepairs4 жыл бұрын
Nope, impact driver I think just has a clutch which helps to "drive" in screws but a hammer drill has a small in and out motion which helps to chip away at things like concrete and brick while the chuck rotates. Also need the right type of drill bit like a masonry drill bit.
@2IGGYS20183 жыл бұрын
Hey man thanks for the video. How far do you drill into the brick with the 1/4 masonry drill bit?
@robrichman33145 жыл бұрын
I have similar shutters, just 2 screws at top and 2 at bottom. shutters keep coming off and i have drilled in to the morter section and now it is a bit 'destroyed' i guess so even the metal anchors don't bite anymore. since the shutters need to go in the same spot i can't really change the 'hole', any thoughts on how to refasten? Can i use longer screws and just go further, i am presuming i would hit some type of wood?. with the shutter being away from the brick, i guess you mentioned something about a block of plywood behind that i could anchor behind the shutter, then use that to screw in to 'wood' on the locations on the shutter top and bottom. thoughts?
@EverydayHomeRepairs5 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, are you using the standard plastic plugs or pan-head screws like I did in the video?
@robrichman33145 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Pan head screws. i first used plastic anchors... then switched to metal anchors, but over time the hole is getting bigger and morter more flimsy/wide.
@EverydayHomeRepairs5 жыл бұрын
Might be way overkill but you could look at masonry anchors or toggle bolts with washers depending on the exact scenario.

If you can't control the speed on an impact gun, get yourself a makita Impact with auto power.

Nice video, but the common mistake here is those shutters are way, way too narrow for that window. For something decorative on a home exterior, it has to look like it could be feasibly real.

There are zero reasons to replace eyesores like that. Remove them, and be done with it.
