Nice work Steve. Nice to see you pushing it in takes time to do but will last. Unfortunately it takes time and looks the same as the cowboys job when its finished. Thanks for the tips... pointing on my house needs doing and as am isolating again its one of the jobs on the list, I think I will struggle a bit on the front as the beds there are between 3 and 5 mm while the walls on the back and sides are the normal 10mm, I guess the bricks on the front are a bit taller, none of the beds look as if a line was used when they were laid as they rise and fall like a rollercoaster lol

Tidy job Steve you don't need me to tell you that. I use the hawk and blade instead of guaging/pointing trowel. Before tooling off with the half rounder. I go right side of the wall to the left and blade in off the hawk with the joint and kind of flick or as if I'm doing a ✔ ontoto the bottom arris of the brick above, so no smudging at all. For me its way faster 😁

Given that there are so many types of masonry walls, getting the pointing right is not quite so simple as it might first appear. Generally speaking, joints should be raked out to at least twice their width, mortar pointing is a sacrificial material and should be weaker and more vapour permeable than the bricks, and the finished profile should ideally match the original design. Mortar should also be compatible with the original materials and this is critical in the case of older solid walls built with lime mortar where the use of cement rich mortars inhibit evaporative drying and are too hard for soft bricks. If you require reliable guidance on repointing, do take the trouble to read the Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls) as this provides useful information, including when does worn pointing affect structural integrity.

Why are you working back hand? If your right handed you work right to left! You work against your work and your joints aren't full when you use a pointing trowel. Don't they sell flat slicker where your at

This is the way I was taught 36 years ago , same as setting brick always left to right . As for the pointing trowel you may not get the joints full but I do thanks
