Sethos is my favorite ping because it grows so fast, is hardy, and is so easy to propagate, while also looking beautiful. But I keep mine outside under a 40% shade cloth, so mine are a pinkish color.

They are really fun. I mostly grow them under window sills, but I decide to throw one under a light to see how it does. It has so many flowers growing out of it now and it's almost completely pink. Doesn't even look like the same plant! They are my favorite ping right now!

Hi I was looking for your video on potting the leaves. I have one of these plants and she told me when I bought it to keep it in container w about an inch or water. Will my plant be OK in this soil

Sorry also I have a blue purple light how long does it need under the light after dark. I also have some clipping I'm potting can I put those under the light as well?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub7 ай бұрын
The light should be okay, keep an eye on them. They should color up a bit, if they don't, you might need a stronger light. With water, I don't keep my pings in water all the time. They really dont mind drying out a bit between waterings. I have lost a few to rot with too much water. You do want to put the leaf pullings under the light as well.

What's your ratio for potting soil for these
@CarnivorousPlantsHub7 ай бұрын
I use my standard mix, which is close to 3 parts peat, 1.5 parts perlite and .75 parts crushed glass or sand.

Sometimes they take a bit to grow. The size of the leaves also change with the seasons. Lots of factors. The type of Butterwort could also impact size.

Is it normal that my butterworts dried up then they all disappeared into the soil in the pots? This happened when it got cold outside but I have the plants indoors.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
They shouldn't be drying up completely. They do require less water in the winter and sometimes go into a succulent stage. When they do this, they stop putting out fluid and might even stop catching bugs. They don't go full dormant but will go succulent mode in the winter.

What are the major differences between Mexican Butterwort and Venus Flytrap care? I'm thinking of getting one of these plants but I already have a lot of knowledge on caring for Venus Flytraps, so I wonder if in depth research on Butterworts are necessary.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub2 жыл бұрын
Not a lot, I think Butterworts are a bit easier to take care of. They can do really well in a window sill and don't require quite as much light as venus flytraps. However, many of them will turn pink and red when exposed to that much light. I have some that are doing amazing in the window sill, nice and green. I have another that is the exact same plant (split off from the other) that is a beautiful pink color since I have it with my flytraps. They do like soil that is a bit more chunky, more perlite or pumice with a bit more sand. They don't like to sit in a lot of water but like to be watered constantly. So something that drains well. They are a little more tolerant to water, so you don't have to have water that is 0 TDS. You can go as high as 100 PPM and they can still do pretty well. They are fun and amazing to grow, you will really enjoy it!
@chomperboi19102 жыл бұрын
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ok nice! But I have 2 questions. 1. If I have a Butterwort, should I let it flower unlike Flytraps? 2. Is the soil I use for Flytraps fine for Butterworts as well, or do they need something different?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub2 жыл бұрын
I have never cut a butterwort flower, I don't think they pull nearly as much energy as flytrap flowers. The soil should be fine. I usually use a slightly chunkier mix but have used flytrap mix when I need to, it's always been fine. The only thing I noticed is sometimes a few of the bottom leaves will rot if the substrate stays wet.
@chomperboi19102 жыл бұрын
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub ok thanks! If I can, I will try to buy a Butterwort if possible. Specifically the Mexican Butterworts.

Does long fiber spaghnum moss work okay? I wasn’t sure whether to just use that (what it came with) or use a custom mix. I would use coco coir instead of peat moss and does the sand type matter?

These were in the pots when I bought them. However, you can put them in whatever planters you want! They don't need deep planters, but if that's what you like, go for it.

Know of any Mexican Pings that can grow well in long fibered sphagnum moss for my terrarium?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub2 жыл бұрын
I think most would do fine in long fibered sphagnum moss. As long as their roots can touch something that absorbs water, they can usually grow there. I haven't grown them in sphagnum moss but I would imagine they would do just fine in it.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely top water them. Be careful though, the bottom leaves that touch the substrate are subject to rot. It's usually not a big deal as it rarely spreads to the whole plant, but top watering can definitely result in rotting the lower leaves.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub2 жыл бұрын
A good starter sundew is the drosera carpensis, they are easy to grow and will make you feel like a master gardener. Make sure to get a Mexican butterwort, they are pretty tolerant and don't require a dormancy. Just pick one that you feel is aesthetically pleasing and is the size you want. Be careful with sizes, photos can be really deceiving.
