I love the idea of scheduling in fun activities, and yes, yellow is the perfect color for fun, for me anyway, pink would work too. But why does my 'fun' always turn on me and become a source of stress, obligation and misery? A few examples.... I got a puppy about 2 years ago, with visions of playing with him, daily walks in nature etc. I love him dearly, and take care of him properly, but it feels more of a responsibility now, than being fun, causing stress and guilt. Social games have become obligations, to log on regularly, to keep up and not let down my teams, guilds and 'friends' etc. They all started out as fun, but now I worry about not fulfilling requirements and obligations, and the consequences of forgetting to do something 'important'. My hobbies and personal projects are now like work, even though they started out as optional fun, but I beat myself up when I don't engage in them for lengths of time, mostly because of factors outside of my control. I can't seem to sustain anything as fun for more than a month or two.

Hi Jen, you posted this 8 months ago so I don't know if you'll even see this, but I relate to this comment a lot. I could have written it myself. I have ADHD and will always be bouncing back and forth between hobbies for a few months at a time. A couple of years ago, I made the decision to forgive myself for my brain working this way. I started adjusting how I took part in activities. If I join a social activity with other people, I don't make any long-term commitments because I know I likely won't be still doing it in 2-3 months. I also feel guilty because I'm not being a perfect puppy parent, but I try to remind myself that I am still feeding her healthy food, and giving her lots of affection, and a stable home. I may not always have the energy to play a lot or walk her every day, but I do what I can, and she's still better off with me than at a shelter or with irresponsible owners. She's healthy and loved and fed and warm and that's what counts. As far as hobbies and personal projects, I have a million of those, and 999,995 of them are unfinished. I have so many arts and crafts supplies gathering dust. But you know what, I keep them, and every now and then I use them, and that's fine... it may take me two years to sew a skirt, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that sewing is something I enjoy doing sometimes. I don't have to enjoy it ALL the time, and I don't have to produce a ton of clothing. It's not my job. It's enough that I enjoy it now and then. I just wanted to offer some solidarity in how you feel. Try to forgive yourself for how you are wired to enjoy things. You're not the only one, there are a lot of us.

@@leaha.6255 Thanks for this. I also have ADHD and, although I have a lot of passions, I find the idea of fun somewhat illusive and daunting. Honestly I think for me a lot of it comes down to being broke, so I struggle to relax, and also try to turn my hobbies and passions into income. Understanding this at least helps give me some compassion for myself too.

The piles are classic ADHD. And often needed. Out of sight, literally out of mind. So if you do find new places for things to live, make sure they have very obvious labels on the outside. If you want to be more covert with your labels, use a sticker system (or draw simple symbols on masking tape on the container/shelf/drawer) as symbols and make an easily visible key to all the stickers that you can refer to. AND keep an electronic written table of contents of where the things are so you can do a find command and it will tell you where those individual things live. If you move them, update the electronic list so the answer is correct. Electronic table of contents has saved my butt the last several times I've had to move to a new home. Also numbering all the moving boxes. Then the list says box 1: box 2: box A: I also find it helpful to say Box A: (brown rectangle - now in bedroom) So when do my find command tells me what container things are in, I can more easily find the container.

i’ve been getting so much anxiety about how much stuff i have and spending a lot of time mentally organizing, but then i get so overwhelmed by how much i’d have to do to get rid of everything i don’t want i just end up not doing anything. i also have so many bath products and stuff that are half used and i don’t think that’s something i can donate which is what i do with most of the belongings i don’t want anymore, but i don’t know how to properly dispose of this stuff in a way that’s good for the environment either. i’ve been stressing about how many things i have so much lately

Same. I mentally organize all the time. But looking around at all the massive amounts of clutter and everything that to physically get done, my brain just freezes. And even times that I try doing little bits at a time, it ends up pointless because there's still so much that those little bits end up a mess again within a day because I have an adhd 7 year old, a 4 year old, and a 2 year old tornado. I really need to just get it all done in one fell swoop, but I have laundry list of chronic conditions do even when I have the mental motivation, my body is almost never up to the task. And then the very few times I can push through and get a lot done, I end up paying dearly for it for a week after in fatigue and pain.

That most fun thing I have planned is moving out of the hellish house with the most obnoxious, inconsiderate people and moving into one with better people who I already enjoy more. I'm really excited to get and build a new desk before my new job starts next month as well. There will be more than just my one cat soon. So I've been (smoke levels permitting, I am in California) slowly taking things to my car and preparing myself. It's actually fun for me. I've just finished all of my laundry and tomorrow I will set aside all of the clothes I need for the next two weeks and then pack the rest because I'm MOVING WOOHOO~ :D Oh yes and I'll be buying rollerblades. We don't really have autumn here so it will just be hot for another month and I'll try to enjoy going outside again. We haven't had the ability to do so safely with the high particulate levels. I just opened my window for the first time in almost 3 weeks this evening which feels like a treat.

I'm on a vacation with a family member, which is supposed to be relaxing, but I feel more anxious than ever (being out of my routine and all) and very far from "just living my life." I'm scared that when I'll come back home, I won't be in the right mindset to step into all that I need to start doing, which is a lot...but I'm trying to hope for the best, since I know it's the only sensible option. I wish I could relax, but I don't even know what that word means.

I decide what things I want to organize first by how much it annoys me. It kinda goes like "Aahhhhgg, I hate the feeling of walking on crumbs, why can someone just clean up these crumbs already???... wait a sec, I can do that". It took me a while to realize that I could use my anger and hatred of being inconvenienced for the use of cleaning 😂, but it's so therapeutic to just get RID of the thing that annoys me the most by making changes. I've done this with shoes I don't use often that just always felt like they were in the way (even when they were in their "proper spot", they're now in a cubby hole that was not meant for them lol), I've done this with school papers, books, my dresser, etc... If something rubs me the wrong way, it needs to change and I will change it. I can't pick an organization system and put my stuff in it, I have to organize as things make me mad or uncomfortable. I'm not looking forward to going off to college because then I'll have to start all over again😭. Idk if this is a neurotypical way of thinking or not, I haven't been diagnosed with anything but I relate to a lot of what you say and it's kinda comforting to know I'm not just being weird about my habits.

My square 1 function was: 10 Pick up the nearest thing that is not yet in a collection/pile/final proper place. 20 Decide what collection name it should be assigned 30 If it's a new collection, Decide where that collection should be for now. 40 Put the thing with the collection 50 While there are still unsorted things: Goto 10 That got me to group things and made decisions about where those groups should be. By way of example, "memorabilia", was a good group: things from all over the house got brought together though I'd never really thought of them as related before. Suddenly I realised just how precious some of these things were! So my next stage was to repeat the process for things within the memorabilia pile and separate them into Memorabilia that were deeply precious, fond memory things, and meh. The meh pile could then be disposed of and the previously disparate things (that I now realised were sentimentally crucial) could be squirrelled away somewhere safe that I'll have forgotten by tomorrow and spend the rest of my life worrying about... 🐿️ But really, it helps... And also know that motivation follows action, so don't wait to feel motivated: pick something up... 💪

I have question. Do you have videoes or know of resources for coping with sensory sensitivities when you can't completely cancel out sound? Every source I find seems to try to eliminate the senses altogether. I have been to a handful of doctors, they all say I can't possibly be so sensitive, but sounds in particular drive me bonkers and it's gotten very bad in the past year. Any suggestions while I also keep looking for medical reasons would be lovely. (On this channel because I've suspected several years now that I may have autism, just has never been worth it or possible to try to get a diagnosis.)

If it's not on my calendar, the appointment/event/mtg doesn't exist. I also have a cheap hard copy calendar hanging on my door. I have to see the whole month on my phone and my door. While I'm not Autistic, I have ADHD, I've noticed that hoarding and problems with Household Organisation are common with Neurodivirgent people. I'm not sure if you watch How To ADHD, however, Jessica has a video tackling this subject as well, I'll link the video down below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp6mo2iqptmcg8k To be honest, hiring someone to help you with the organisation of your home is actually something I consider to be a good idea (as long as you're in a position to afford such a service). Don't force yourself to get to the point where you're experiencing a clutter overwhelm/meltdown situation before asking for help. I've noticed often with Neurodivergent people that we often wait until it's in the emergency status before asking for help, which can put us in a situation of unnecessary stress we could have avoided if we had just asked for help earlier. Prevention is generally always better than the cure. Take care of yourself

Does Autism get worse with age? Is it a different diagnosis if the subject meets most criteria but still communicates “normally”? Is it normal communication if the subject is drained after social interaction, most likely due to unconscious masking? Your vids are very well done. You don’t have to answer anything professionally, your best guess is fine. I tried other venues only to get met with anger and sarcasm about my questions. I also will appreciate what any of your subscribers may add. I am new to this. Caught between a psychologist saying Autism and a psychiatrist saying I don’t have a deficit in social interaction. Professional organizers can indeed be very helpful, but I would be careful in selecting them. I used to work for a high end organizing agency in New York, and they charged clients a lot for my services despite having barely trained me at all. They basically assumed I knew how to do the job already then fired me after a few months when clients complained that my work was too slow and inaccurate. I think you might have better results choosing someone self employed than going through an agency. Either way, before you hire them, I'd ask how they could create a system you could easily maintain yourself, not just something that looks pretty but is too perfect or complicated for you to actually use or requires them to come back regularly and maintain it for you.

What is my goal? Improve mental health. How am I going to achieve it? ... * cricket sounds * Does anyone have SMART goal example for improving mental health with the categories already filled in? I can't figure out any of the "letters", other than I know it's very relevant...

My suggestion: S - improve how you feel every day (and maybe view your circumstances as in a more optimistic outlook on stuff that happens?) M - do a feelings check with a feeling wheel each day (you can find them on Google) A - incorporate structures that help you feel better into your daily activities (e.g. take a walk, read sth fun or whatever you like), also schedule taking care of yourself (remember to drink water, have regular meals and sleep, shower, move/stretch your body) R - you already got that T - maybe a time frame of 1, 2 or 3 months and then compare afterwards to before you started (idk, I do this in a similar way and it helps, but I don't do it that structured and strictly. Guess I need to improve my self care routines aswell^^)

I don't rate SMART targets , Sam One template (SMART) on all the glorious #diversity , on all the glorious #neurodiversity of our #onesharedearth ??? Seems a little silly. Hiring a professional organiser? Okay. This worked for you 👍 You always recognise your privileges as per options given to you from gold and silver coins 💰 Colour-coding to thrive 👏 👏 👏

The UK does. This is, sadly, not the silliest thing about us.

So, if you cannot measure your goals, perhaps you might try a holistic measurement. You know, a SHART goal.

I wouldn't say I'm Nero divergent person. I would describe myself. Well on autism channels like this anyway. As a aspergers man now having the abilty to adapt to NT world. Even this year when the government decided to turn it into OCD parallel universe to what it was in February. A COVID secure parallel universe I just though as joke name. Or it likes the programme life on Mars. Where Sam Tyler goes back to 70's. It does feel like landing on a different planet at times from February.

I get so impatient waiting for people to get to the point . I find chit chat time consuming, and annoying. Although I myself, feel like I ramble on too much when I'm speaking... Anyway, could you make condensed versions of your videos?

With the 3 dislikes. Doesn't death make you sad? Or is it alexithymia?,(self promote great video on alexithymia). You find it easy to joke about the pandemic. With death before, I used to go into shock before. Like during 9/11 I was in shock I didn't know how to find the emotion of sadness. Then I just felt numb after shock is numbness. So if older relatives died in my family. I would be in shock back then. I cry later than most NT. I work a lot alexithymia since lock down. I do cry a lot more now. So I have become a attention seeking emotional now. I'm a emotional reck. So don't change Samdy you still struggle with alexithymia. It best to using a logical way out of this new pandemic world change.
