As a salesperson I want to remind you, not taking 'no' for an answer is our job. And whether it's a soft sell or high pressure, we're good at what we do. Remember though, that you have permission to say 'no.' Many inexperienced buyers don't think about this during the purchase process. If something doesn't feel right to you, just say 'no.'

I would also like to say, if the dealer has installed add ONS, like mudguards, running boards etc, don't pay for those, they put those on you didn't ask for them, simply tell them to take them off and remove the 1200 price adjustment that came with it. They'll remove the add on pricing, but they rarely remove those installed items. Chances are they added these because that particular unit had been there too long and they wanted to dress it up to get it more attention. A five is a five even if it's wearing a new suit lol.

Your videos and website helped me talk a dealership down to get your suggested OTD price for a 2022 dodge durango citadel V8. I was also pre-approved by a credit union and had their 2.99% rate in my back pocket. As soon as the saleman said 3.99%, I pulled out my pre-approval paper and the dealership ended up giving me a 2.4% interest rate. I owe yall a couple thousand dollars easy lol. Thanks for doing these videos, they are very informative and helpful!

I have a neighbor who is not shy at all and extremely persistent. When we were in high school in the late '60's, one his favorite entertainments on a slow weekend was to go to car dealerships and get test drives, haggle over price, then tell them he'd "think about it." I pay him to buy a car for me from time to time. He gets me better deals than I ever could.

I've been told "the price is the price" before. I've noticed that that price is always considerably more flexible when I shake the salesman's hand, thank him for his time, and ask where the next closest(manufacturer) dealership is. I've yet to make it out the door without some kind of an adjustment, and there's usually some embarassed stammering when I ask how things suddenly got so flexible in the time it took me to turn my back.

I’m an RV inspector and people in our association are encountering more and more RV dealers that won’t allow inspectors on their lots. Some customers have walked away and bought at a different dealership. Some have stood firm and the dealer has “made an exception.” One big chain has started offering a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection for about $700 (Talk about the fox guarding the chicken coop. They tell customers that they know their products better than independent inspectors do!) Most dealers are flabbergasted to learn that a good RV inspection will take between 4 and 8 hours depending on the size and complexity of the rig. Two of my personal observations are 1) I’ve only twice inspected a rig with no significant issues - ESPECIALLY new RVs, and 2) When I show up with a box of donuts it leads to a much more cooperative attitude from the service department.

How about we just start walking away from these scumbag dealers? Ray is right about want vs need. Most don’t need a new car, they just want it. As a salesperson, consumers need to research their dealers better. Buying a car can be your second highest priced purchase. Do some legwork, ask questions, compare, check reviews, call, talk to friends. Do not buy a car without diligent research. Knowing the dealership can be more important than the car you want or need. Don't let limited inventory be the only reason you buy the car you're looking for. You can compromise on features, but not on the dealership you end up working with.

Although I agree 100% with your advice, it’s much easier said than done. A lot depends on what you want and how far you’ll go to get it. Especially with inventory where it’s at today (new and used) these scenarios don’t always make sense. If you want a used Raptor, for instance, and there are very few to be had simply walking away or trying to reason with them about future purchase when a dealer says “ the price is the price “ will not work. Most dealers, even in small cities don’t care that you could be a return, long-term customer. They are just happy enough to sell the truck to the next person through the door. It’s extremely short-sighted but so often true. I’ve tried extensively to build a relationship with my local ford dealer but they never budge. Buy all my fords at smaller dealers in the region because of this. Keep up the great content! I enjoy it!

Love Ray's tactful response. Keeping any emotions out of the exchange. A good way to gauge the demeanor of the salesperson, too. If friendly sales rep tries to change subject or fidgets with impatience while Ray responds, that's a cue this salesperson won't accommodate Ray counteroffers. Call it a pass and go to the next dealer, no point insulting him by asking for another sales rep. Or, if first impression of body language on greeting exchange sends mixed signals, abort the plan to sit down with this particular rep by saying just here on leisure day off/weekend driving by dealership. Look around for other sales rep if there are more customers in the showroom to occupy the one tactically rejected, and try again.

To their credit, every dealership I've talked to over the last few months has always answered yes to the question of "Can I take your car to get inspected?" If anyone ever says no, I would;ve walked out right then and there. HOWEVER, the problems happen when you take that inspection report back to the dealership. One dealership told me flat-out that they weren't willing to spend any money on the car regardless of what the mechanic discovered. (This thing turned out to be in such bad shape, the parking brake wouldn't hold it!) Another dealer offered to fix *one* issue, and only because I showed him a picture of me wiping fluid off a leaking rear differential. He wouldn't budge on the price or spend any more than that on repairs, so I walked.

When I said that was too high, the sales manager said then they couldn't do business with me and actually ended negotiations and walked away from the table. I guess because they gave me a $5 Starbucks they thought they could add $5k to the bill. They also prided themselves in being a "Christian" company, which they mentioned multiple times. I've been working with a couple of Toyota dealers who keep telling me they can "order me a car". I asked them, "I thought you couldn't order a car from Toyota, you got cars allocated to you?" They each became uneasy and avoided answering. I knew this because of your videos, thanks so much! The craziest thing is they want a $2,000 deposit for a car that sells immediately (on the off chance one lands in the showroom). The wait is 4-6 months, according to them. I don't see why I have to park $2,000 for a car that obviously is not a risk for them to have. Seems like a lot of money that the dealer gets to sit on while we wait for cars. I could see a token deposit, but that much is frustrating!

All of the new vehicles I’ve purchased over the last 3 decades has been with me politely making a final out the door offer, leaving my number and saying call me if your still sitting on this vehicle and while I’d like to give YOU my business I’m off to the next dealership to see what they have. I even did that on a truck that I had built to my specs because I couldn’t find what I wanted. This is a very different market but I refuse to pay sticker and certainly never a markup. You have to know the value of what you are looking for, it’s value to you and be willing to walk away.

I love Ray's approach. I have had good experiences with Ford dealerships being polite and business like. When I used a car for business purposes I leased a car and got a new one every two to three years. Later I could not write off the car and purchased them outright. I remember bringing in a lease car with tires past the wear mark, they said they would slap as set of used tires so I did not pay for new tires. That was a $500 to $600 savings. When I purchased a car it was a custom order at a flat $500 over invoice less any rebates. When I bring my car/truck in for service (at the Ford Dealership) if it is going to take a while they give me a loaner. They wash my car after service. Also, I have gotten competitive rates from Ford Motor Credit and the loan process is quick and efficient. I can not say the same for service on our Jaguar or Dodge Durango.

Five days later, the car engine exploded a half-dollar sized piece of the engine, all the oil flowed out, and the engine was ruined. So, it's after the dealer's three-month warranty. How would you approach the dealer about getting the thing fixed. Will a dealer feel any obligation to take on some of the loss?

Interesting suggestions. The one thing I would disagree with is what I would call the, 'Wimpy" strategy you suggest. 'I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." Give me a good deal on a car today and I'll buy another one from you in 2030..I think most dealers are going to go for all they can get today, and not worry about the next possible car sale. They figure you might just walk out the door and have a heart attack and never come back, or next time buy the hot new model car from another manufacturer. What if the dealer said, "pay me $2500 over MSRP today and when you buy a new car in 7-8 years I'll take $2500 of the MSRP for you?" Doesn't sound very enticing does it?? t

About 12 years ago I started using a broker to buy my cars. It's so much less stressful, and I've consistently been able to save money. Since brokers buy dozens or even hundreds of cars every year, they have a LOT more leverage with dealers - and there are none of the silly little tricks like adding $200 for Scotchguard, $150 for etching the glass, and charging $300 for paperwork. I just send an email to my broker that lists the car and all the options I want, the broker finds the car, gets a price, sends me an email, and I accept or decline. If I accept, I have the car delivered, do a final pre-purchase inspection, get the keys, pay, and go.

I have been watching some of your videos lately because I wanted to trade in my Jeep for a V8 instead of the V6 I had so I can pull a smaller RV, I found the Jeep I wanted on the dealer website and it was still in transit from the factory (2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit V8) I put a deposit on it so they wouldn’t sell it and I did end up paying sticker price for the new Jeep however I managed to talk them into giving me $6,000 more in trade in value for my 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee trailhawk V6, and when they tried me with a super high payment I said absolutely not I am willing to pay “X” amount each month and they got my payments lower than what I said I would pay! Thanks for all the great advice from the insiders!

I hate when they immediately ask what your budget is. How do you dodge that question because it's obviously so leading and it's what they're going to use to take advantage of you. I walked out of three dealerships last weekend. No one wants to negotiate with this market. Also, two I went to had screens attached to their computers that they were putting price and customer info into to look at pricing. How is that negotiating?! I wish the last one I went to that did that to me, who was incredibly patronizing, that I would have spoken up and said, "Is this how you're negotiating cars now, because I can just go home and do this on a computer myself." I'm curious what the response would have been there.

I wanted to trade up on my 10 year old pickup with 219k miles. Asked a dealer about 50 miles away to quote me a price on either of two trucks he was advertising with mine as a trade He said he wouldn't give me a quote, I couldn't afford one of his used trucks. I said too bad, I just cashed out a high yield short term investment and have $25k cash, more than asking price for either truck. We were about to move so I was willing to take trade-in value vs sell it myself. Bought a truck 2 months after the move.

But the thing is, there is NO "shortage" of newer "used" cars! There are thousands of acres of land in the USA where millions of unsold cars are lined up, 2018s, 19s, 20s and 21s, possibly some that are slightly older! If those idiot dealerships would bring those cars back onto their lots, the prices could be and should be, driven way down! Why do they have to lie about a "shortage" of inventory???

This is Orlando Florida I do not know about the rest of the country but this is what's going on here. A lot of dealers specify that if you don't buy it somebody else will. I have made six offers for a 2017 and 2018 Chevy Camaro V6 6-speed. For $20,000 out the door. Dealer specified to me that we are between 4 to $5,000 apart. My response to them is okay I am in no rush it's a car I want not a car I need. If you change your mind contact me. With the exception of one Camaro every single Camaro that I have looked at on lots of dealers are still there from 3 to 4 months ago. Don't know what your opinion is on that but if any of you got time chime in thanks.
