My local Walmart left a 36 inch black stone in rain and it oxidized as result. I was able to haggle them to 50% off.$120 for a brand new griddle with some rust on the griddle top. This video helped me tremendously make it look new again. Thank you!!!

Just made your BANG-GOOD (GREAT!) Mongolian Beef and I was so disappointed that my veggies had some black stuff in it which didn't happen to your veggies. I've only had my BS for a few weeks, so it's still working through the initial seasoning I suppose. Regardless of the black stuff, this dish was amazingly good! I kept debating on whether to sand down the BS like I do my cast iron pans and, since the solution came to me as I slept on it, I purposely searched for THIS vid on your channel. THANK YOU! This was just what I was looking for. I will tackle this job today!

Excellent video, I’m picking up a blackstone this week. Outside and unused 3 years. 100.00 of new 899.00. Needs this treatment and as on old construction worker wanted to do it this way but unsure. Thank you for letting me know I will be doing it the professional way. An old griddle down to bare is always best, then take care of when you own it.
@harmoncollege6 жыл бұрын
Good video, Hussey. That's the part that scared me when I got my 36 inch Blackstone a few months back, but I figured out a way to make things simple by taking tips from Todd Toven and a few others. My initial seasoning was three or four thin coats of cheap Canola oil, followed by a roll of sausage. After each cook, right after turning off the burners, all I do is gently scrape off any excess debris (and hit any sticky stuff with water), then wipe with a paper towel. Then I take two more paper towels and rub on a thin layer of Canola oil. THAT'S IT! I don't like cleaning either brother, but it takes maybe two minutes to do it that way. Then pop that hard cover on. I heat up on high for 10 minutes before each cook, and it sanitizes the top and starts to burn off that oil. I say keep it simple. :) Good luck with the re-season, looking forward to the video.
@thehungryhussey6 жыл бұрын
Chris, canola as a seasoning worked well. You could see in that's video much of the spots were hard to come off. The problem was me and I'd cook something with some acid in it and not clean it up well or none at all, and let it sit. Not good. Hope I didn't misguided folks in thinking of myself seasoning with lard as not to use canola though. I'm doing lard as really an ode to what our family did back in the day. Just to see how that goes.

Glad to see the term “jack leg” being used. I coined that phrase myself back in the 90’s. Of course I’m telling the truth. Out of that whole video why would I comment on this guy calling himself a jack leg? I too am a jack leg as I did this same thing to our griddle or whatever it’s called. Completely covered in rust. Been through two batteries on the cordless for about 2 hours. Almost done. Such a pain in the ass. I’ll get it later won’t be uttered out of my mouth when it comes to this grill again. F that. Lesson learned.

I just got a blackstone recently and decided to strip and it and give it a new seasoning. I've done cast iron reseasonings since I was a kid, so I thought I could do this. This is basically how I did mine, except I just used the wire wheel. The pencil pusher comment struck home; I haven't really used my hands very much since graduating college and last night I really found out just how long it'd been lol. What I wish I'd had was an angle grinder with a bigger wheel. I used grapeseed oil, since that's what I use for cast iron, and while it didn't get black everywhere, it's got most of the surface done. Going to try cooking on it today, and the rest just takes time and some effort.
@thehungryhussey2 жыл бұрын
I've done this a another time and used a angle grinder with a paint and rust wheel and that zipped the stuff off much quicker. Being a pencil pusher is tough bro. Haha.

Try washing next time with vinegar. It will eat the rust. If I were in your shoes, I would have laid a towel down across the entire cooking surface and drenched the towel with a 5% vinegar. Then you need to check on it every few hours and rub at the rust spots to verify that you've left it long enough. Once you're happy with the results, simply clean it with soap and water. I've soaked cast iron skillets in the past that were completely covered in rust and after 12 to 18 hours the skillets were 100 rust free. Depending on how deep the rust you have will depend on how long it takes. Additionally, on smaller items like pans, dutch ovens, or smaller griddles can be put in a self cleaning oven to strip away all the old seasoning so you can start over. Cheers and good luck!
@thehungryhussey3 жыл бұрын
Interesting take. May try that next time.

Hey Hussey, I love your channel and just want to add a tip if you don't mind. I didn't have the metal grinding wheels but instead used what I had. I used 40 grit on a corded orbital sander and finished it off with 80 and then 120. It took me about 25-30 mins. It was 2.5 years of caked seasoning with some deep rust spots. The 40 grit ate right through everything very quickly. I already watched your re-seasoning vid and am done for the night. Philly Steaks subs this weekend with white american cheese and caramelized onions on grilled J.J. Cassone rolls. Thanks

(The box for the new griddle was also at the trash site.) Got everything but the drip tray cup. :) That said, It does have rust spots on the surface. Looking for a way to strip the surface without all the work. Any suggestions?

Use an angle grinder with a paint and rust pad on it. Takes it off in 15 min or less.

Bro u need to invest in some grill bricks, cash & carry has them. U heat up the grill, throw some oil down, and brick it. We use them every day in the restaurant, works like a charm.
@thehungryhussey6 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that, someone else just told me about these too. I'm interested in knowing how they can be better than a drill at 1000 rpm with a wire brush? Guess they do work. Well, that's how you learn about things!
@ChezJohn6 жыл бұрын
Well, u use them AFTER your cook so it's ready to go for the next one. The grill will be hot, and the bricks are porous so they really get the tough stuff. Less time cleaning.
@jb_stn6 жыл бұрын
Those would probably destroy the seasoning no? Aren't they typically used on stainless tops?
@ChezJohn6 жыл бұрын
Yeah they'll strip it down to bare metal, but u should reseason anyway. I would check with the manufacturer but, they really are safe.

In the market for a Blackstone or a Camp Chef myself. If you clean and oil it well after EVERY use this won't happen, right? What happens during the winter when its not in use for 3-4 months (I would have it covered), will it get rusty from non-use? Thx!

hope to see the after like what you do before cooking on it...

Yeah, you just have to roll the sleeves up and get at it. Not fun, but good to have it back ready to cook.

Use grill bricks instead...amazon is good source, made of porous rock. Heat up grill, poor some veg oil on and scrub, then just wipe off.

For the sharp 45’ edges use a oscillating tool with sand paper attachment to get in corners just a thought you worked so hard cleaning it more patiences that I’d have I’m a land surveyor who draws all day so I know about pencil pushing and how tiering me-docker task can be when physical exertion is and with a new little one my heart goes out to u god bless and have a wounderful day
@HrWisch5 жыл бұрын
On top of the wire brush, a 1:1 solution of water and white vinegar helps a lot to get rid of rust. Sand paper should only be used if the rust already goes deeper into the metal.
@farwoodfarm92962 жыл бұрын
Its rolled steel, the sandpaper won't do anything to it.
@HrWisch2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should buy better sandpaper, not the cheap stuff for wood.
@farwoodfarm92962 жыл бұрын
@@HrWisch what I meant was if you go straight to sanding it’s fine. The sandpaper will work and it won’t damage the griddle.

Really, a great job at some good old fashion elbow grease, and like you admitted at the start of your video it all could have been avoided if you had just done the usual clean up after cooking. Takes a strong will to admit when you've made a mistake and then take action!

I just got mine and I use it down at my weekend place at the lake. How do I store it at the end of the season so I don't come back to this? Thanks in advance, Max
@thehungryhussey5 жыл бұрын
You'll want to make sure you clean and oil the heck out of it. You'll want a hard cover over it to avoid any moisture on it.

Ya done good brother. Go with Lard, heating the griddle to when it turns gray. Repeat. Make some groceries. PS. I'm almost afraid to look under the cover of my Blackstone 28". I'll handle what ever is there. Smart move using corded tools.
