Heya Sandro, that's quite a lot of work and for those of us with without a sander, and fists of ham, doing that by hand would be a punishment. Wondering what's your thoughts on the off-the -shelf 'Headlight Restoration Kits"? I've been given the 'TURTLE WAX HEADLIGHT & LENS RESTORER KIT' but haven't used it yet. Looks like hard work and not enough materials to do it properly. Can these kits actually do more damage than they fix in the long run? Loving your vids btw. Been binge watching all afternoon. You have a talent for Cinematography, Editing and Scripting. If you give up detailing you should produce films for others. Super enjoyable content and I friggin hate detailing stuff, when I had coin I would just take it to a professional like you, but now the world has changed and you're saving my car from a miserable existence with your channel so thank you! :)

I have used that Turlte kit. While the result won't be perfect, it was more than enough for the car to pass MOT. One think though, is missing from the kit. The clear coat with UV protect. I would defenitely add that after the treatment. Otherwise benefits will be short lived.

I've done mine 3 times in 15 years. The last time about 6 weeks ago was no where near as aggressive as what I just saw. I did mine wet, starting with 800, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500, and finally 3000. Then cut them with the 3 grades of Scholl. I guess I was being cautious. Now I just polish them every couple of weeks with a machine the same as yours. Maybe I'll try Meguiar's Ceramic Wax over the top now.

I think this is a great tutorial but knowing my OCD I would still probably just buy new headlights and pull the bumper. For those that don't have the $ though, this is a great tutorial!

Sorry for the late reply haha, but just wondering where you get your trizact discs at? I’ve been using the clothe abrasive which I recommend for paint work but they don’t cut the headlights & I can’t find a distributor in NSW

The guys over at Paint Scratch recommend using clear coat after sanding instead of polishing. Do you have any thought about using clear coat?
@CarCraftAutoDetailing
@CarCraftAutoDetailing 2 жыл бұрын
There’s pros and cons either way. You should mask the entire car if your going to spray clear as it will travel onto other panels, and once that clear fades and fails like the original clear, you’ll see the sanding scratches once again and you’ll need to sand the clear off once again and re-clear them, but if it’s done right it can last many years or as long as the factory clear did. If you refine the scratches they’ll never come back, but you need to reapply your sealant/coating more often to prevent the yellowing returning, but in most cases you won’t need to sand again, just compound/polish and re-seal/coat them.

Thats a lot of work have you tried adding a coating like opti-lens at the end to prolong the results.

With the purple 3M discs, do you use a foam backing interface with it? Why do you choose to start so low at 180G? Is Menzerna FG400 with that yellow cutting pad (what brand is it?) enough to remove 1500G sanding marks? At 9:18, I can see swirls on the top right corner where the sun hits the plastic. How long does this entire process take you to do a set of headlights? What do you do to limit splatter and cleanup? As the engine bay and front end of the car would be covered with plastic slurry. Hope you can answer my questions as my process is similar to yours except I do 1000, 2000 and 3000G and then compound/polish which removes all swirling as well.
@derektruong6272
@derektruong6272 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks the the speedy reply mate. I do a lot of standalone headlight jobs and charge quite a bit for it so I'm always trying to go for 100% defect removal where possible. Do you think refining further than 1500g would remove the swirling? If I could eliminate 2000 and 3000g wetsanding in my own processes but still maintain a high % of defect removal then I'd much prefer it.

Well said Sandro. What's your opinion of the 3M purple clean discs? How much life does one disc have? Do you have to throw it away after one use?

Con Evans good thing I no longer wet sand any more . CG headlight restore works pretty darn well. It takes me 5 min with both headlights. I charge very cheap of 20$ but it's almost instant I can do it.

Why start with 180grit sandpaper? With the sevarity of those lenses you could have done 800, 1500 and ended with 2500 and gotten better results. With less money because you wouldnt have to waste all those pads.

Towards the end of the video he wrote to use an all in one polish that has UV protection or a sealant that has UV protection. This will keep this finish lasting.

What about using tooth paste? I don’t have all that technology with the machines and what not? Any poor mans tutorials would be great. I bought an older 2006 Audi A3 (drives like a dream)... Need a lot of work with paint fading and cracked leather chair, things coming off from ceiling etc etc. I don’t have the type of tools you have and wondering if things around the house could be used to do satisfactory enough of a job to bring some life to these areas. Thanks. J
