It's hard to imagine how much travel will change in the next 14 yrs. In previous decades, I had fun traveling around without get visas before going to countries. One exception is some years ago when I acquired a writing assignment on a recurring sports event in Japan. The Japanese Embassy in the U.S. gave me a 10 year Business Visa (a bit longer than my Passport expiration date at that time). That was the best visa deal I ever had.

GREAT strategy! Live/visit only where you're made welcome. I haven't traveled as extensively as you Dan, but I do the exact same thing. I've lived in 5 countries and will never get a "retirement visa". They tend to be complicated and expensive with rules that often change in all the wrong ways. Also, they tend to tie you down somewhat to one country.

I'm 100% all for slow travel. I spent 2.5 years in Europe before COVID drove me back to the states. I spent the lockdown in Serbia and it was fun/rewarding getting to know Serbs in depth. This absolutely ranks as one of your best videos. Now I'm heading to Mexico/South America in April for 2 plus years. I imagine you have spent anywhere from 1-30 plus days in a single rental. What's that "ONE WEIRD TRICK" to help you sleep when the mattresses are long past their expiration? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Hi Dan, Your passport is powerful. My password only allows me to stay in Malaysia and Thailand for 30 days. I heard that visitors can only enter, exit and re-enter Malaysia and Thailand twice within a short period. I have no idea about "within a short period". Therefore I always stay in Malaysia for 30 days, then go to Thailand for 30 days, and go back home. I will travel to Malaysia and Thailand again by the end of this year.

You will have days or weeks to cancel. Also when flying those airlines in the future your tagged as a preferred passenger. I have been globe trotting since 1983 when I flew to Singapore on a one way ticket looking for a job. I was instantly hooked. In traveling the world every year for 15 years before the pandemic I found I needed a Chinese Visa good for 10 years an Indian Visa good for 10 years a Brazilian Visa. Russia permitted Visa exemption s if you booked a Russian tour. You could save your old passport s and use these visas. The rest of the world you could either get stamped tourists visas complimentary or in worst case pay a fee on arrival. I was able to take a train to the Ukraine via Poland Romania and Bulgaria.

Great information, however - I do have some comments/questions; 1- There are different styles of retirement. I know that you really enjoy traveling but some retirees, especially older ones, prefer to settle down in one place and not move around every few months . Those ones - do need some kind of long term residency permits. The other question is - you mention that you are American and has a privileged passport, may I ask what passport does your g/f has ? I mean, such traveling requires both of you to have 1st class passports. To the best of my knowledge, many western male expats have 3rd world g/f. Still, great show and great info.

Thanks, Dan, for the good information. Besides the visa, there is another issue: the customer knowledge requirements of banks and brokers. Where did you deposit your shares? I spoke to Interactive Brokers: they told me that they require a permanent residential address and a corresponding consumption bill (electricity, internet, telephone). That's one of the bigger challenges keeping me still at home at the moment. Thank you.

@@VagabondAwake just a thought. As the USA is the most unpleasant and convoluted country I have visited, in regards to these issues (possibly on a par with Canada). I appreciate your videos and the great spectrum you are able to present. Just a quick response to the feelings you expressed at the beginning of the video. I think retirement on a tourist visa is a good solution, as long as you know you won't be a burden on the welcoming nation. Lots of things to consider for us potential retirees, but it's great that anything more than a tourist visa is not needed, if you have all your bases covered. The US and the EU are probably not the best in class, if you have issues with paying for the privilege of being a visitor for an extended period (but then again, it's only the really privileged that can even consider this as an option) Most countries can't be said to run visa programmes for profit, or to inconvenience anyone.
