I lived in Thailand for over 10 years and traveled and lived for months in Cabodia, Laos, Vietnam before I returned home to my home country and met my future wife from the Philippines there and then I traveled with her there and lived there for 6 months before covid came, we traveled all over the Philippines when we lived there. . My overall impression of Asia is that as a retiree looking to settle somewhere in Asia, I would without a doubt recommend the Philippines. And this is not because I am now married to a Filipina wife. I was married for 8 years to a Thai too. I also speak fluent Thai, so it has been said, because you have to do this if you want to communicate with Thais. As I said, I had no problem with this. But Thailand makes everything so incredibly complicated for pensioners by constantly changing visa rules, only this is too tiring, when you are a pensioner you want to have a problem free life don't you. And there are many more negative things about Thailand that you only notice more when you live there permanently and then it's too late I think for most people, and many of my friends disappeared after the military coup in 2014, but since that times, it has only become more expensive to live in Thailand, I think, before you got 6 times at Bath, now it's barely 3 times. But in the Philippines you still get 6 times more for your money. And the living costs are at least 300-400 US dollars more to live on per month, but if this doesn't mean anything to you, that's fine. I also like that being able to communicate better with the person I'm with has a lot to say, as well as the fact that she has the same faith and values as me, this simplifies things like celebrating holidays etc. My wife is 25 years younger than me but she has a high education from university and come from a family with money, so I don't pay anything to her family, We have a daughter together who is now 2.5 years old and has moved back to my home country again, as I want her to grow up here at home. But to all of you who want to move to a country in Asia, I urge you to move to the Philippines. They actually have a separate program for retirees as well. And they all speak English.Good luck my friend.

From what I’ve seen in regards to accomodation it’s cheaper and far far better quality in Thailand at this point. The food in the Philippines is below average, and the cost of living has gone up significantly. Talking about how many peso or baht per dollar also makes no sense, it’s how much or how far each dollar gets you in each place. Just my opinion, I’m currently in the Philippines and wouldn’t recommend it for most retiring, at least the places I’ve been so far are very dirty and third world. Not without its charm but a huge culture change for most Westerners compared to Thailand. I do agree with the visa situation which is a far larger concern than I think many people understand until they have spent some time out of their own countries, in saying that the Philippines costs about $80 aud per month to stay here, so while it’s easy to get it’s a significant expense in both Thailand and Asia. The Thai retirement visas look pretty good though, 2k passive income or 23k in a Thai bank. I guess everyone sees things differently, I’m in Dumaguete and wouldn’t stay here long term unless I had no other option.

I basically weighed all of the pros and cons of SE Asian countries and based on my personal likes and dislikes, I chose the Philippines. I live with the Filipinos and have fully adapted to the Philippine culture, people, and life. I know that is not always possible living overseas, so I'm very aware that this is a great accomplishment. I was stationed in the Philippines for several years before I retired from the US Navy. While I was stationed there I took the initiative to learn how to speak the main language Tagalog via self-study and practicing with the locals and within two years I was semi-fluent. The fact that English is taught in their schools which is compulsory subject made my conversations much easier and I excelled at it. I have also traveled to Thailand on several occasions during my military career and I loved the people, the culture, the food and plenty of other things that I can't put my hands on. Tough choice but I would say the Philippines would be my first choice. That being said I would like everyone to know that yes I am a little biased but had the tables been turned I would have chosen Thailand.

Thats what i learned from him. We married 8 years now and we been together for 11 years we plan to retire in the Philippines in 10 years after my children graduate to high school. I'm originally from Europe. Actually, I'm a little biased because my wife is a Filipino woman, but due to the nature of my profession, I've spent my entire life in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The Philippines has by far the most welcoming and hospitable people, less crime (though this is arguable), the lowest cost of living (unless you reside in Metro Manila), and a top-notch tourism destination. What I dislike about the Philippines are the taxis and the irritatingly noisy motorcycles.
@SLOBeachboy

Actually the statistics show that the Philippines has a slightly higher crime rate than Thailand but they are both fairly close in this respect. As for the people being hospitable and welcoming I would say that both Thailand and the Philippines are just about equal in this respect as well. The biggest difference between the two is that virtually everyone in the Philippines speaks English and this can be a huge selling point. The bottom line of course is that asking which country is “better” is like asking which flavor of ice cream is best. In other words it’s purely a matter of personal preference.

When I decided to retire from work 5 years ago I was living in the Middle East, my chosen places to live was the Philippines or Thailand. I've traveled to the Philippines on many occasions and have been in relationships with Filipino women, I've also traveled to Thailand many times. After weighing the most important points that would meet my expectations for a quality lifestyle I chose to retire in Thailand. The reasons are obvious to me as I have had the privilege to spend lots of time in both countries. Although the number of reasons are several the top 5 reasons I chose Thailand are: Food, crime, quality of medical care, infrastructure and quality of life for the money. The cost of living is also a consideration as I find Thailand to cost less than the Philippines while offering a high standard of living for the money spent. The level of poverty in Thailand is no where near what I found in the Philippines and the Thai culture offers a type of beauty not found in the Philippines. Now that I have lived in Thailand for a few years and have watched KZbin videos put on by people living in the Philippines and speaking with the Filipinos living in Thailand I'm convinced beyond doubt I made the right decision to retire in Thailand. Just my perspective based on personal experience.

Hi Dan. My comments on Part 1. The Philippine tourist visa is clearly an advantage for low income expats. For high income expats, they can afford either country so it really isn't much of a decision factor. English is more widely spoken in the Philippines and I understand that that is very important to many people. It is also a helpful factor in relationships. However, I get the impression that English in the Philippines is more for the younger generation and that you could run into a language barrier more often than you might expect. Thais definitely speak a difficult foreign language. However, there are thousands of expats here with Thai wives and I've never seen a Thai expat wife who doesn't speak English so it isn't as much of a barrier as you may think. Age gap relationships are very much tolerated here in Thailand. I think the no-divorce situation in the Philippines skews the available single woman toward women in their 20's and early 30's so you may see that in the age gap relationships there. Thailand has single women of all ages so that there are age gaps but you see it a little different here. The religion/culture difference I think is very great as you described. The Philippines is going to be more familiar to westerners. Thailand is going to be more exotic. Looking forward to Part 2 (tomorrow)

Pot is now legal in Thailand, the choice was obvious for me anyway as someone who enjoys getting high without the harsh consequences the Philippines is know for. I went to a pub I now frequent down the street from where I live, the owner and some other patrons and I all shared a join at the bar while exchanging stories over a beer, I enjoy that option. Another plus is the diversity in climate options, Chang Mai for example being further north offers a more mild climate for those who are not a fan of the heat and humidity. Not to mention the typhoon risk you have in the Philippines. I lived in Florida for almost 20 years and know how disruptive to your life those storms can be or worse. I also like the proximity to the adjacent counties and the ease of not having to island hope to get to an international airport for flights. I am in living in Pattaya right now and can take a taxi to Bangkok for $40 or jump on the bus for $4. I have yet to visit the Temple region of Cambodia but will be going early next year, that is a quick cheap flight. There are many beautiful temples and historic sites in Thailand as well and I also like the diversity of wildlife available here if you have an interest in that. And just like in the Philippines there is no shortage of beautiful women who want to meet you. Both are beautiful but I am happily living in Thailand now and see no reason to move on. I am not saying one is better then the other I am just pointing out some of the reasons I am here. I recently spent 10 months in Medellin Colombia and that should be on everyone's list who wants to retire abroad based on my experience. There is a big beautiful world out there and if your still watching these video's from your home country let's be honest it sucks there compared to here so stop procrastinating get off your azz and move, life is to short and you are not getting any younger. Cheers....

It's kind of simple. If you are a single guy, and if you are looking for a twist of western women, with a grain of Asian fundamental, and if you have the money - and are looking for a younger women go with Thailand, being that it's almost impossible for an older man to find a younger woman, that you don't need to pay for in form of service. And totally out of the question if it comes to a relationship. Where if you are looking for a younger woman, and don't want to pay for your time together, but hope to find true love go with the Philippine woman. Though if you are looking for surroundings that are safe / like easy access to medical care and help when needed - And if you are looking for a place that have it all, and cheap living cost, transport and an easier way of life. Go whit Thailand. Been that the Philippines are still fare behind, and the cost of living are higher than Thailand. All this is in the eyes of a normal ground person / man. And not a guy with a lot of money in the bank or a 100K + youtuber, or an Online Worker.

Thailand for now has an edge in infrastructure but not for long. Non-stop development of modern cities and amenities countrywide will let Ph catch up or exceed Thailand in a span of a decade or less. Ph offers more diverse tourist destination with endless beaches of varied colored sands, endless waterfalls, cave exploring and spelunking, deep sea diving in various marine protected areas, a volcano inside an island inside a volcano, a desert area, a cool high altitude summer mountain region, surfing destinations, a volcanic lake adventure in Pinatubo, various islands to endlessly to explore and most important of all, easy communication via English proficiency or spoken by 90% of the populace. As you travel pan island, you see diverse regional culture and adventures offered from one locality to another. Various Internet server access countrywide is getting better with SpaceX now in the country. Upcoming modern airports and ports plus ferry and cruise ship travels are forthcoming. A country that provides health care workers globally is good news for foreign retirees too and majority of marriageable women are literate and educated proficient English speakers.

Thanks so much for your informative videos. I am curious if you might “drill in” on these subjects a bit more? For example, someone like me is more suited to larger city living such as Bangkok or Makati/BGC. When I am in Phuket I rent scooters all the time but I would not risk that in Bangkok and would rely on the rail system and occasional taxis. That is just one example but the point is when you mix city and island living you may end up with too many generalities. It would be more helpful to have comparisons of island living in both places and city living in both places. By the way, I really appreciated your food and visa comparisons. Thai visas are not workable without a visa agent. I love Thai food and really thought it would improve my diet. I can deal with the msg and salt (lots of extra water) but I was stunned to find out how much sugar they dump into their food. I saw some other more experienced expats that have a note written in Thai to request no sugar or other preference. Now I request no added sugar and can’t really tell the difference. Thanks again!

Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Philippines are good places to visit and hangout for a while to see if you like living there, the people, the food and whatever else you’re seeking. Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia are not so good imo and have no plans to return. Can’t speak about Indonesia as I’ve never been there. Thailand has air pollution issues January - May, and language is often a challenge and difficult to learn. The forests are dead, no wildlife. There are some nice beaches and places to stay, mostly on the islands and it’s packed with tourist. The availability of foods is great, dental and medical is great, lots of malls, the roads are good, modern buses for travel, the driving can be dangerous, beware the motorcycles, buying a vehicle is cheap and easy, the people are pretty easy going, low crime. Many choices for visas. Lots of air travel choice out of Bangkok. Malaysia is amazing for trekking and wildlife, food is good, great medical, never used the dental, malls, good roads, beware the motorcycles, good bus travel, people are friendly, helpful, cool and speak English. The beaches on the gulf side are polluted, same as Thai beaches. 90 days on arrival, they have a retirement visa, but requires a lot of cash up front, Lots of air travel out of KL. Vietnam is fun, the food was ok, but choices are tough outside of Saigon imo. The people are friendly and if they speak English are helpful. The driving looks crazy, but it wasn’t bad driving motorbike for me, lots of horn honking. Nice hotels, prices a little higher than Thailand. Visa situation for long term didn’t seem good. Philippines has cool people, very outgoing(ly) friendly and helpful, great musicians and music scene, the food is rough, and availability of fruits and veggies was tough and expensive comparably, restaurant food was not for me and expensive. Buy ingredients and cook at home if long term living. The roads are bad, 1960s buses. Rentals and hotels expensive for what you get comparatively. What I didn’t like is the poverty and petty crime. Blink and your phone, sunglasses or pack are gone. I need and want to spend more time there. Luzon vs Cebu? The language is not too difficult to learn. Just some of my thoughts.

Question for some of you long-term residents of these countries. Last time I was in Thailand and visited Philippines, I only booked a one-way ticket to PH so that I could keep my travel plans flexible in case I wanted to stay longer and explore. But when I went to check in for my flight at the airport in Bangkok, the airline would not allow it until I had booked a return flight and literally had to scramble on my laptop to completely guess when I should come back. I really hated that I could not leave it open, especially if I had wanted to go to a third country from PH, and ended up paying a change fee on my altered return date. So do you guys just book tickets and pay the change fees later or is there an alternative?
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake Жыл бұрын
Great question vanceman99, As you have probably heard we almost never buy round trip tickets. We move forward slow traveling the world. But some countries require a return ticket or onward flight. But the rules change all the time so don't assume what I am about to tell you is true for any airline or country. You have to check the night before. But is they require a return ticker or onward flight, here is what we do. If so, when you try to board your flight going to the country, with a one-way ticket, the airline will ask for proof of a return flight or an onward flight. We handle this three possible ways. If you can find a refundable ticket a few hours before you board your flight, buy that, and cancel after you clear customs at your destination. If not, buy an onward flight from one of the online companies that offer onward flights. They cost about $12 USD. Just Google the words "Onward Flights" and a few will pop up. But if you decide to buy the $12 onward flight, show up at the airport 3 hours early. We had one refused by the airline once. So that brings up the third way. When your $12 onward flight is refused, step out of line, and log on with your computer or smartphone and buy the cheapest flight you can find exiting the country. For example, we search online for the cheapest ticket to a nearby country, leaving that country. Then you lose much less money than you would if you bought a roundtrip ticket to your home country. Skyscanner is the best place to find cheap tickets in our experience. Some countries will also let you buy an onward train or bus ticket to another country which can be even cheaper. Use RometoRio.com to find those. Best, Dan

Those 'bias' towards each country will give a reason or two I am sure. The story will never end. It is just connecting a personality to a country. Eg many canadians and Americans go to Mexico. It’s my understanding that if you are buying a home or a condo in the Philippines, they waive the necessity to put money in the bank.

Are Malay women generally taller than women from Thailand or the Philippines? I think some women in far Northern Europe are significantly taller than women in Central America.

Qiang is unusually tall in SE Asia. She is 6 feet. That is why she makes a great runway model. She makes clothes look amazing.

@@VagabondAwake Yes she is a perfect runway model with a great facial bone structure as well. I live in the Midwest of the US. I'm tall for a woman at about 175 cm. I'm always thankful to see younger women around me who are 6 feet or taller. They make me feel good about myself as does Qiang. I hope you both stay healthy forever.

@@VagabondAwake I've spent time in Honduras and El Salvador. Some Mayan women I encountered there barely come to my waist. I was surprised.

Great video, thank you! Where in the Philippines is most like Koh Lanta, Thailand? I really liked that area, especially Long Beach. Also, can you extend the PH visa at the airport upon arrival? Regarding the Thailand retirement visa, it's worth mentioning that you must be age 50+. Alternatively, you can choose to pay handsomly for a Thai Elite long-stay visa at any age but you still need to do the 90 day reporting and renew it each year.

Palawan or siargao has many beaches, also cebu and bohol. Actually in 7k+ islands thats lot beaches you just choose where u want to stay. You can ask people in immigration in PH airport. As long as i know you can stay here 30days or if u want to be longer stay tell it to immigration you going to extend.

Great question Gif24 GT. In this video, I explain how to slow travel the world on a tourist visa for 14 years. It tells how much time favored nations can spend in each country without getting a visa before arrival. But do verify before flying because rules change all the time. Here is that report: vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-retire-on-a-tourist-visa/ Thanks for your great question, Dan

I would spend a little more time traveling in each country and your mind may settle on one. I am not sure the Philippines are cheaper. Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pofCpXWort6LiMk
