Hello,
Welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel. Today, we're excited to show you how to easily cover an old canvas, so you can reuse it and paint over it at home. This is an excellent way to reuse or recycle old boards, or even turn boards into canvases for your acrylic or oil painting. You can use this to paint over oil paintings, acrylic paintings and more.
You will need:
- Old canvas boards, or wooden boards
- Fabric (can be old pillow case fabric, sheets, or textured fabric)
- Paint (non-glossy)
- Paintbrush
- Water and bucket or tray or water
- Old towel
- Scissors
- Gloves (optional)
- Something to cover your work area
Follow along with the video for each step! You can also use this technique for all kinds of fabric application to the board. Think about using differed scraps of fabric to make different effects. You can be creative with this, so have fun!
We would love to share more about art, such as art activities for children, adults and teens, and teach how to use different tools and materials in your artwork. So if you have any suggestions for what you'd like to learn, please let us know in the comments below.
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel,

➤ A little more about The Gold Coast Art School:
Since 1995, we've been teaching creatives how to successfully paint and draw (even when they think they can't!) We have classes for beginners and intermediates, and welcome advanced artists too. Many of our students love coming to our school not only for the depth of knowledge our tutors bring to each session, but for our relaxed and welcoming community feel. Our adult art students usually use oil paints, but we encourage any medium, including acrylics, pastels and watercolours. Check out our social media and website for info, or email/call us any time to chat to Jess and book your spot in our next class!

Awesome! Definitely give this a go when you can. It makes paintings even more special and unique, and you can tell people you didn't just paint it but you made the canvas too! :)

This is honestly the best tutorials I've watched on how to re use canvas. I've tried the sand over and paint method and that didn't work well for the next painting. Keen to try this method!

I just tanked a board that I was working on because I textured it with a homemade gesso and it went powdery on me after the first layer of paint. Too much water in the wash, I wasn’t thinking. However! I am so glad that I came across your channel. I now have hope that I can save most of the texture work. Thank you!!

This was great--thank you for making these, and for making it light and fun. I have a question: if you don't happen to have any cans of paint lying around, can you use acrylic gesso for this? And if so, could one also use clear acrylic gesso, with burlap underneath, to create a kind of toned, textured surface? Thanks again!

Hi Leha! I just went and asked dad, and he said: Yes to both. He mentioned that depending on the board thickness, you may need to paint the board first, before re-covering. This is due to the fabric pulling tension and could curve the surface, so you might have to make that judgement for yourself. He said that clear gesso is basically like a binder medium, and works just fine. Just take note of the end surface texture you want, as you may need to apply more coats to get it smoother. Also, the tone of the fabric can have an effect on the tone of your painting. Just another thing to keep in mind! 🙂 But have fun with this! Hope you have awesome success 🌟 Jess

Will this method work even on an old oil painting? Having heard from so many KZbinrs that acrylic cannot be used on oil, I am trying to reconfirm. Please answer. Thanks a lot for this very useful video: your technique has taken away a big burden off my head. Thanks once again.

Hello! Yes it absolutely will work on an oil painting canvas board that has dried. It is true that you generally cannot paint acrylic onto oil, if it's a normal wet painting situation. But if you're wanting to cover some old canvas boards to reuse them, you can use this technique even if the original painting was oils 🙂 Just make sure that the old oil painting has fully dried, which can take 6-12 months depending on the thickness of the oil paints.

some constructive criticism, I would enjoy this video 10x more if you shorten it and got straight to the point while still explaining in detail and giving techniques. I just felt the video was way too long and really struggled to watch the whole thing.

Hey Will! That's totally fine, constructive feedback is all good! Dad likes to go in-depth with his instruction (throwback to uni lecturer days, or maybe just part of who he is). But, we'll keep working on trying to make things more snappy. Cheers! 🙂 Jess
