Here is a hack. If 1st gear is tough like a car, just rev it really high, and then drop the clutch. You will burn out in 1st gear, then switch really quickly to 2nd. After that? You are golden my man. You're welcome!

And a tip that my instructor taught me: use the rear brake first, then the front brake while pulling the clutch to stop.

Great bike (I have a z400) and great to teach someone how to ride, except for that clutch. It is so weirdly light you can't feel a friction zone, you have to use your ears for engine note and your sense of movement. I will swap out for stiffer springs and hd friction plates some time.

Its a 400cc ninja. Good bike but really small, revs rather high due to small engine. My beginner bike at school is a Z650.

In this variation of motorcycle transmissions I guess you could say, neutral is situated in between first and second gear, so that's why you push the gear lever down to get to first gear, neutral is a position in the gear box where no gears are selected so the engine isn't able to send any power to the wheel, so the gear setup is this - 1st, Neutral, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and sometimes 6th, you usually leave a bike in neutral after you stop so naturally you'd start there, it allows the drive wheel to roll freely without having to hold in the clutch, the other gear setup is - Neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on

in a lot of bikes the pattern is 1 down mid neutral(half click) rest is up till top gear..well in some old commuters its 4 gears all up
