Awesome video, guys! I got my son his first mtb in january of 2018 (he was 13). Three months later we were at our locally famous lift bike park, Spider Mountain here in Texas. Summer of this year we hit the road and went to Angel Fire, rode South Boundary while we were there, then to Purgatory bike park, then did the Whole Enchilada in Moab, Brian Head park in Utah, then stopped in Sedona on our way home. He's gotten to be such a proficient rider and we ride together all the time. As a sole parent I'm blessed that he loves it as much as I do.

Nice video thanks... The same tips apply when you take your kids skiing or snowboarding. And now my kids are young adults, the days skiing / riding are what they remember now and we still have great days on the mountain after all these years. This what what keeps families strong & healthy.

Easier when you have two boys that like to ride. My daughter doesn't like it so we usually throw in lots of pool and lake time with the family and she always gets a spa day when the rest of us are riding one day. Whistler is great for options for those that dont want to ride. Zipline or hike or something for a day of rest mid week also to break up the riding days. Nothing worse than riding on a day you're sore and bones are so rattled you can barely hang on to the bars.

Excellent tips all the way around And by the way your kids even ride better than I do Excellent parenting to you too When I was little the most I could do was just go in small circles now I ride constantly back and forth to work so mainly I'm a mountain bike roadie And sometimes when I do my bike packing that added weight sometimes helps and then again sometimes it hinders And sometimes with my mountain biking bike packing trips the weight has to stay on me even for what you're doing with these trails that you are showing here then there are some times I get way over my head but I still make them somehow and it hurts like crazy on my wrist because I don't have any risk the bones are gone and shattered

I like to also bring my daughter's xbox with us on longer trips because kids can't always ride all day for multiple days. If my daughter doesn't want to ride one day then she can hangout in the hotel or Airbnb and I'll ride a half day. This of course depends on your kid's age and maturity level.

This is a great video. I have so many more questions. I have a 7 year old that has been riding for a while and I would say is pretty good (Along with 2 of his buddies). They all are pretty accomplished MTB riders and race BMX. I am curious on your thoughts on riding in front or behind the kids? My issue on longer downhills or places where they can get some speed my kid doesn't self regulate really well. It has resulted in some scary off trail moments for him and me.

This is great advice! Do you think seven is a good "first park" age? My daughter will be six next season, and she likes riding (on very flat mellow trails she's tried), and we've been wondering about the bike park. Here in Maine our local options aren't as big or gnarly as Whistler, but I'm still kind of torn about it, in part because it's super hard to find a dual-suspension, hydraulic brake bike for a kid that size.
@jackkimble8392
@jackkimble8392 3 жыл бұрын
My personal opinion is that you should probably get them on a decent hardtail first and here's why. They will most likely not be doing the big stuff at the parks for a few years and by then they will need a new bike because they will have outgrown the old one. This means that the high cost of a full sus kids bike is not very justified, especially since you likely won't be riding the trails where you need a ton of travel with a seven or even eight year old.
@jackkimble8392
@jackkimble8392 3 жыл бұрын
Also, you could definitely take them to the park at 7 or 8 because most bike parks have a trail for everyone from easy to hard.
@carsonpearce5980
@carsonpearce5980 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, hard tails are a great start for any age and are a better price option too. Ive been riding a hardtail at a lift access bike park every season for the last 4 years and am only now trying to get onto a ful sus
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackkimble8392 She already has a decent hardtail (Specialized Riprock), but I couldn't find anything with decent brakes in her size. I'm more worried about that than the suspension.

I would love to get into mountain biking and my mom seems pretty supportive but I’m the only one in my family that really wants to do this and I myself am a kid and I will need a parent or a friend to go with me but I know my dad isn’t going to get himself a mountain bike just to go with me and they aren’t going to want me to go solo. Now my little sister might want to go with me but I don’t know how my mom would feel about just us 2 going. I have no clue what to do or how to even start learning and getting into this if my dad can’t take me to a trail because he doesn’t have the right bike. Can anyone please recommend something? What should I do?
