Never would have guessed you could troll with a bucktail and honestly I've never seen it on any other saltwater fishing channel. So, between the bucktail, the squirt squid and the big trolling skirt you have basically the entire range of bait fish sizes so no need to fill up the live well first. I love it.

Thanks a million for continuing to watch. The white bucktail jig is one of the most versatile lures. It can be jigged, cast and retrieved, trolled... and much more. I believe I've caught more with the white bucktail than any other bait or lure. And yes, usually I zoom right by folks spending time catching live bait. I'd rather get out and get into the bite. Thanks again for your support, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. Bucktail jigs catch everything, you won't be disappointed, especially trolling them... they cover shallow water over the reef and deep water for more pelagic fish. Good luck in your journeys. Tight lines & take care

Great video! I love how you detail everything down to even the exact rod/reel you use. I love buck tails, they catch anything that swims. I tie a lot of my own and often add a clump of saddle hackles so it’s basically like a Lefty’s Deceiver fly tied on a jighead. Really adds a nice action to the tail when trolling or straight retrieving. Another option is a flash tail, just a clump of flash left a couple of inches extended beyond the end of the buck tail. This also adds good action as well as the flash

Hi Heath. Really enjoyed this video. Particularly the knot education. I was taught to start with a Bimini twist for just about everything and go from there. However, your rig seems to be equally as strong and makes a lot of sense. Especially for lures like buck tails and such. I look forward to giving it a try. Been in the Keys for the last week. Water has been rough but fishing’s been good. Lots of Tuna, Mackerel and even some early Mahi. Be back in Pompano Monday and look forward to running into you on the water soon.

Thanks a million for watching and always being here. I truly appreciate your support. So, the spider hitch is also referred to as the "poor man's Bimini twist". I grew up on the Bimini twist, when I learned this combo about 20 years ago, I stopped tying the Bimini. I use this knot combo all the time, and your perception is spot on... It is just as strong. Glad to hear your Keys trip was a success... Look forward to seeing you out on the water likewise. Have a safe trip home. Hope all is well with your family. Tight lines & take care ;)

Hi Heath, Great information on the bucktail jig. Its probably one of the most versatile baits ever made. I like to add a Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet as a trailer. We made the move to Poplar Bluff, Missouri on Sunday, so I'll probably be doing fresh water fishing mostly. I still will be watching your videos. Please say "Hi" to Avi and the "Fishing Girls". Take care and good luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey, The whole fishing family says "HI Mickey" and they are glad to hear you made it to Missouri safe and sound. You'll be tearing up the fresh water real soon. Hope your new home is peaceful and treating you well. I've always fished the white bucktail, ever since I was a kid... I truly believe I've caught more on it, than any other type of bait or lure. That's why I always have one on a rod when I head out. Take care of yourself and your family, best wishes for settling in. See you Sunday :)

Hello - great informational video.... My question is will this system work on braided line as well with a flurocarbon leader?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes, it will most definitely work with braid to fluoro. I have a second small spinner that has braid on it... only difference is, I give it about a 25 to 50 foot leader, instead of 10 ft. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Great advice adding this to my trolling arsenal for sure. Can't i just use a spro power swivel to ensure the buscktail jig doesnt spin? I only have so much brain power for learning new knots and you taught me the clinch knot and i use that for almost everything now. Say hello to the " Slayer"
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a bazillion for watching and always being here. I truly appreciate all of your support for the channel, couldn't do this without you. Yes, you can use a swivel, however, when trolling the jig it doesn't spin, it trolls in a streamline manner, doesn't wiggle, pop or anything, just the little hairs flutter in the water. I live by the clinch knot, sure, other knots exist, but they are for other things... If you keep in mind, how you are fishing, what you're fishing with and you're setup, proper knot decision making starts to manifest itself, then again, I really try to not complicate things too much. Avi says "Hello Auqaman :)" Thanks again for everything. Tight lines & take care ;)

After watching your video this morning, I loved it and went out to pick up some of these Spro’s from my local cabelas. The guy suggested that 1/2oz was quite small and talked me into the 2oz, I decided to grab a 1oz and a 1/2oz as well. I’m going to be on a sailboat in BVI and planning to troll with these on a single line. Depending on the wind speed I’ll probably be moving along at about 5.5 to 6.5 kts. What size would you recommend for the white bucktail? Thanks!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Жыл бұрын
Don't listen to him about the size. I've fished many different sizes... the larger ones don't work... he's selling you what they can't get rid of. The 1 Oz and 1/2 Oz will do fine. but don't go any bigger. My favorite is 3/4... Good luck and be safe out there.

Could you use a wire leader to avoid losing jigs to cudas and other toothy fish?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Of course you can use wire. I will lower your hook up ratio due to the visibility of the wire, but you won't lose your rig.... that's the trade off.

Great Video one more time Heath ! My mainline on my light tackle set is braid. Should I use the same knots, but braid to Fluoraocarbon, then bucktail Jig ? Why is it I need a white Bucktail ? Other colors will not work ? Thank you for all the good videos and information.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. As for connecting the leader to your braid, yes you can use the same knots, spider hitch on the braid, no name on the fluoro, and end it with a clinch knot. You can also use an Alberto knot to connect the braid to the fluoro. If you don't know how to tie an Alberto knot, here's a link to a video where I show you how to do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3WQZHaYbc2DbcU Personally, I prefer the Alberto knot for braid to leader. Also, you're gonna want to increase your leader length when using braid main line. At least 35 to 50 feet. You need shock absorbency, otherwise the braid will yank the hook out of the fishes' mouth. When it comes to jig color, you can use whatever color makes you happy, I've found the white to be the most effective. I've fished with a white bucktail for over 30 years, and I believe I've caught more fish on it than any other bait or lure. Thanks again for your support of the channel. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)

@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Normally, I don't use wire leader with this application.. Yes, it's a calculated risk, but, I'll take the more stealthy approach and a higher hook up ratio, by using fluorocarbon. If you want to use wire leader, I'd tie a haywire twist directly to the lure, then another one on the main line end, use a swivel on the mainline to connect the wire. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)

What pound test do you usually troll these bucktail jigs with?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The main line is 12 lb test monofilament and the leader is 20 lb fluorocarbon. The set up I use is a small spinner, a Penn Spinfisher 5500 on a 7 foot Penn Battalion rod rated 12-20 lb class mono. I know it seems like light gear, but If interested in seeing it in action and how powerful it can be, here's a link to an episode where I catch a sailfish with it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn_ZfqKHbamFa6M Hope this helps. Great video Heath... I do a lot of inshore fishing for Speckled Trout here in Louisiana, we troll a lot of paddle tails on jig heads and hard baits. I have always wanted to try buck tail jigs. Typically we troll in 9-25’ depths with 12lb mono at speeds around 2mph I know you are an offshore guy but would you have any advice for me? Do I need a swivel? Or a series of knots like you showed in this video? Or would I be ok tying directly to the main line? Thanks in advance
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching, sharing your experience, and asking a great question. For me personally, I like the stealth factor the fluorocarbon leader adds, but, yes you can tie it straight on to your main line. No don't use a swivel, bucktails don't spin when trolled, so you're not looking to avoid line twist. You can definitely troll these at 2 mph or a little faster for your target species. I've always thought of trolling as the pursuit of fish that are actively hunting, so I try to make them chase me down. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. Tight lines & take care ;)

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thanks for your response, we have trolled with mono for decades with great success, we prefer mono for speckled trout because of the stretch with their soft mouths. Good to know they can be trolled without having them spin... excited to try this in the fall and winter!
