If the sleeve is slipping, spread (pull) the bars on the cage to hold it. Feather out with the "coming off" direction, apply in the pushing on direction for best results

Good video! I don't usually roll out of a tray, so my method tends to be a little different, but the main points remain the same. Spread the paint evenly, maintain a wet edge, don't dry nap, and backroll each section before it starts to tack. Thanks for the great content, keep up the awesome work!

Yeah he didn't really mention backrolling, eh? I'll load the roller up then create a "V" shape like 3-4 feet high (in the middle of the wall, and also not much wider than the roller width, and that's when I'll roll onto the wall. Then I'll load up again, repeat, and then back roll those two sections that I just put on the wall. How do u go about it

I started painting my office a flat navy-blue color. My rolling technique was bad and it showed. Frustrated, I decided to watch one of your videos (different from this) where you talk about loading up the roller with enough paint and making sure to overlap the previous pass by 50%. Then I did the "layout" pass from top to bottom that you recommend with the handle to the right-side. BINGO! That was the instruction that I needed. Not having enough paint on my roller for each pass was my biggest issue, IMO. Now, my paint job looks professional and I'm no longer intimidated or frustrated by my painting abilities. Thanks!

The Idaho painter is the best, I've been painting and drywalling for over 22 years and I use these methods as well, I actually pull two wires slightly apart on some of my frames and my sleeve fits more snug, I actually have my elbow side of my frame on the dry side and when I'm laying it off in one direction after distributing I gently twist my frame to pick up any line's. When I'm rolling a second coat I intentionally leave a small run as a marker so I'll know what's wet and don't go back and try to lay off paint that's already drying causing flashing and uneven stipple. Of course when I leave the run for my marker I pick it out .

How many years have you been painting. I love this channel for good tips. 38 years and I've never seen anyone paint that way. I can take a sleeve out of a half used five stand it in the tray and plunge a handle in it, for one thing. That's a loaded roller, lol. I start by cutting in the wall so I can feather roll it out tighly, especially around switches and outlets. Start near the bottom and roll up the near the full height. Roll back down half the width of the roller and up again. Flip the sleeve to get a little more filling distance. My personal trick.... you're all welcome.... Develop an even roller with a smooth feather edge (rolling toward the sleeve on side) after filling in the space and carefully roll it out corner to corner. (in the sleeve "coming off' direction). At the end I back paint and finish into the painted end. Check the wall at an angle to be sure it's smooth. Done ! Flat is what I use to seal a patch...which will burn through any Semi Gloss. Last important tip.... With Semi Gloss... Don't let the cutting dry before it's rolled, or it will show lines.

That's what I always think of these videos. I've studied painting in trade school for three years before I applied for a job as a painter in Europe. That's how the system works there. Now I'm a Wisconsin Painter. It was 26 years ago, and now people might just get inspired, learn the tricks of the trade for free and skip the painters. Well, that's what youtube is about. Making money with the content. Everyone is making and saving except the painters. Sort of like revealing all the tricks of the magician, until no one shows up at the shows :) Chris and others also reveal how to tape properly, make perfect lines, etc. Now anyone can do a decent job. The only thing left for good painters is a good routine that helps us to be faster, more efficient, so if it takes 4 days for a diy er to paint a bedroom, they might think... you know what, I'm not saving much money if I pay myself $4 an hour to save the $450 that the painter would've charged. I guess I'm trying to be positive about this. :D

It's great that Chris takes the time and effort to post very helpful videos to help out the amateur painter. However, KZbin videos done by professional painters make any job look easy. If someone has very little experience, painting for them can be difficult and takes a lot longer than you may think. There's much more involved than picking up a roller or a brush and slapping paint on a wall. Preparing the walls or trim goes a long way in getting a nice finish Really good painters are underappreciated these days.

Sometimes, being a good painter means being a good un-painter. Don't find out the hard way, what side you should be on. One ruined article of clothes, a gallon gets bumped over onto carpeting or down the side of a house, can wreck your whole day......lol I brush, roll, spray, stain, varnish, hang vinyl, match colors, drywall and plaster...

we call that back rolling here in NC ! I prefer to cut in trim first then roll walls. Seems to be faster because you can paint fast on the trim then cut the wall into the trim.

I back paint the trim on doors and windows, but just the sides with trim paint (semi) Then I cut in the walls (flat) Easier to cut the wall straight, than a 1/2 inch trim. All same paint....same cut sides and fill the rest of the frames after the walls are done. Paint the door(s) last.

I lift the loaded roller over the tray. With a turn of my wrist I tilt the sleeve over clockwise And back a turn of the wrist Return to level and it will hold. Shift to the wall. Second speedy method is a careful spin of 1 or 2 revolutions. Then, the shift to the wall

Purdy makes a frame that holds the roller on both ends, and is adjustable from 12" to 18". If you paint a few projects a year, it's worth the $25 investment.

Solid! Nice and concise. but lead with the frame where the most pressure is. It’s 2022 and we are struggling to pull paint rollers off of frames over here. It matters because anyone with less experience in painting that doesn’t fully understand the importance of backrolling or how to do it properly will leave at least 20 lap marks on the wall your painting. For example, I have a guy named Jonny, after two years of painting with me; I can’t trust him for an amazing even finish because he doesn’t lead with the frame anymore. The extra pressure from that part of the roller is enough to create noticeable lap marks and flashing. Jonny needs retraining.

@@gshick true but 9” Wooster frame with a Wooster gt stick is so reliable and maneuverable. Add a 1/2” corona roller and Behr marquee… your talking only 50-65% of the speed of an 18”. Easier cleanup too with a jet hose.

after painting smooth sheetrock with semigloss for 3 years straight doing comercial jobs i learned real quick to put it on evenly almost like halflapping when you spray but with a roller otherwise you look down the side of the wall in the light and youll see every single line. smooth walls and semi gloss is one of the hardest things to make look good. that and brush and rolling steel fire doors with oil paint with a moe hair. i dont miss comercial painting one bit lol nothing but steel doors, doorframes and smooth wall semigloss lol and endless conduit which sucks too

Why wouldn't you cut in first so you can eliminate brush strokes with the roller as much as possible and have a more uniform texture? I don't know a single professional painter who rolls before they cut in. Also, 18 inch rollers all the way.

I’ve loved your videos! They’ve been really helpful to me as a DIYer. Question on outlets and covers and light switches - really nice houses I’ve seen have the outlets and covers painted to match the wall. I’ve read this can present a fire hazard. I’ve painted a couple of mine to match walls and they look GREAT. Before I go about doing all of them throughout the house - is there any chance it’s listed as some sort of violation in an inspection when we sell? As for light switches, should I avoid painting the actual switch since they are handled so much?

So, I’ve only painted a half dozen houses or so, but I am 100% positive that if I loaded my roller for each strip I would have an entire wall worth of drips! Let alone load each strip and use a 50% overlap! I know you know what you’re doing and others who post videos but stuff like this baffles me. I will load once every 2 or 3 9” strips or even three sometimes and I’ll come back half an hour later and find drips. I once went a bit heavy on a wall, but nowhere even close to what you’re doing and when I came back there were no drips but the whole wall looked kind of globby or saggy.

After using and washing them about 10-15 times the nap starts to get a little stiff, that's when I save those sleeves for oil primer, basement floor rolling, etc. when I use them one last time. I hate wasting so I wash them out meticulously until water comes out clean, but after they dry you can tell when the nap gets stiff, and starts to deteriorate and won't hold as much paint or won't do a nice even finish. On rough walls they're still ok even then.

Wow, is this the home owner class?? Roller frame should be facing the way your rolling, so your frame should be pointing left in this with slight pressure towards, ( strict your wrist left) to avoid marks

Hi there! I just found your channel and have been learning a lot. I was wondering if I could pick your brain about which airless sprayer to buy. I'm not a painter; just an ordinary DIY homeowner. I want to paint my house which is a 1600sqft ranch that has some additions as well as stain my cedar fence once every few years. We have about 400ft of the fence, so it's quite a bit. I guess I want something that's going to deliver a good product but also not going to break the bank.

Been painting 20 year's I don't face my frame backwards like you... in those 20 year's I've only had a nap come off my frame maybe 1 or 2 times if it was not tight enough put a bit of frog tape around the inside of your roller... You giving away all the tricks of the trade but as others have said they may be able to think the can achieve a finish like a pro but its not as easy as it looks unless you been doing it all ur life like us in the trade and people it is a trade. Saponification A reaction to soap or something that has otherwise contaminated the surface. Try washing substrates with Tri-Sodium Phosphate. Available in any real paint store.

A plastic tray like Simms with deep ribs helps. Typically you can allow several layers of paint to build up and then peel it clean. No liners, just a second tray. Quality roller cage like his Wooster is essential. Slimy drywall primer is sometimes a challenge and a cheap plastic grid floating on top will help.

If the first coat is not strong enough. Add a second coat for strength. A third coat and your work should be well done. There should be no marks or lines left after any coat. Take a look from different angles. Or improve the application tool/ technique.

Excellent advice. Too bad 95% of painters don't do it the proper way like this guy is explaining. Instead, they will try and get away with using as little paint as possible, quick roll job, grab the customer's check, and bounce hoping they can get to the end of the block before the customer sees the finished product. We write our own scope of work proposals now for our painters, we don't specify # of coats anymore, we say "full coverage of all painted surfaces". It's just a shame what this industry as devolved into, I wish there were more painters like this guy but it just comes with the trade I guess.
