@@FlappyBellyIm a professional painter and this guy has made some really good points...but also doesn't address some important things... Hey Pearson, who is a professional painter can paint really quickly and straight without any tape... A regular diyer can save themselves a lot of time by taping...I never tape ceiling or door frames but taping The scene between the trim and the wall has more purposes than just creating a straight line (which I suggest getting a sharp edges technology tape. It will help you create a nice straight line even if you're not a professional painter and also save you a lot of time, particularly on your second coat) But the other thing that's almost just as important... In which he doesn't show in this video at all... Is that if you paint up and down with a 9" roller (or any size roller) They create little paint. Splatters from the paint coming off the roller as it rolls up and down... When the roller is at, its most wet from just dipping is when this happens the most... If you're not wearing long sleeves, you can sometimes feel it hit your arms ... Now these aren't big fat drips. These are little specks that are barely perceivable with the naked eye But if you get up close to your white trim, you will have little specks of your wall paint all over your trim if you didn't put some tape in between your trim and the wall... That said, that's the only part that I would advise regular homeowners and even professional painters to tape

I'm a retired painting contractor with 50 years experience. You without a doubt give the best painting tips on KZbin. Haven't seen one yet that I disagree with ...... although I might have put tape over the top of the baseboard to avoid those pesky little dots coming off the roller when the wall is a darker color. ;-)

Thanks to you, I have just about completed my first bedroom. I'm 70 never used a paint roller or sanded walls. We have a 120 yo home. The ceiling has not been touched by us , 35 year owners. Due to health problems, I got a painter in to do this. I used a sealer on the woodwork and it looks awesome. No paint on the carpet either! So this year, I've conquered the roller, sprayer, and caulking. Thanks to you. I'm so pleased I could be bothered to try. Have a bucket with warm water and rag nearby to instantly wipe any small error. After sanding, run your dry hand across the wall, if there is dust from sanding wipe the walls clean. Use a mildly sticky roller on your paint roller to remove loose fibers before using it to paint @ 15:49 he removes some fibers from the wall. Before you start cutting in with the brush, load up your roller and leave it in the paint tray (not in the paint area) and place the tray in a 13-gallon garbage bag (so it doesn't start to dry out), this preps the roller & gives time for the paint to soak in.

Just want you to know how much this video helped me, i started painting a couple of years ago when i found the house i wanted to rent the landlord had a leg injury and asked me if i would paint the house to cover the rent so of course was all in, I found out i have a good steady hand and was decent but had no idea of the fundamentals of being a real painter, ive painted over 14 houses for him now and have been struggling to find a good technique, he does have a pro painter-contractor on the job that i would love to learn from but i think he thought i was trying to take his work so he provided very little insight, so one day i look too ole youtube and find you and now im 10 times faster, the thing holding me back was that i was so slow it took me forever to paint a whole house, these tips have changed my world, tips like use the paint inside the brush, using hot mud to prevent flashing and quicker dry times, after this video i bought a hawk and a good brush and got a job done in a week that would have taken me months before, so thank you for the tips i could not find anywhere else.

I am a 15 year professional painter. I completely endorse this video. Great advice. But the truth is most homeowners just don't have the patience to do this. Some do. I've seen fantastic homeowner paint work and absolute disaster. I'd say the wet edge that you mentioned is one of the most important details you addressed. Rolling somewhat "quickly" helps the wet edge so it all drys uniformly. Another pro tip is try to finish each roll stroke from top to bottom so all the stipple matches. Also the lower the sheen the better the hide on imperfections or any high or low spots on the sheetrock seems. Love your videos. Well done

That is what I was thinking too. I'm a contractor and we don't usually sub out out interior painting. I don't know that I would suggest these techniques to DIY homeowners - it takes many hours of practice to cut in by hand like this. I still advise my DIY clients to tape+caulk most cut-in lines, especially between two high-contrast colors. Yeah, it takes more time but they are not on the clock - they will get sharper lines than hand cutting IMO

Jeff - I SO OWE YOU! 10 days ago I painted my Closet-To-Voiceover Room conversion project w/ 2 coats of primer (over new plaster). Today, I laid down my first color coat. I have never felt so satisfied and accomplished as I do right now. The sanding step ( never did this step until this project) and 2nd color coat have yet to be applied. AND MY ARMS & BACK FEEL GREAT (that’s a first)! I have been amateur / DYI painting our homes for 35 years. I got pretty good at taping rooms over that time. That said, I HATE taping, the time it takes, the removal process, and (even with Frog Tape) my still not superior results. This is the first time I have ditched the tape and tried to freehand cut my edges lines. Learning curve for sure, but already I’m getting as good if not better results. Likewise, we have always used either bargain or mid-range priced paint. We went higher end this time. That change, with breaking free from the tyrant of the “W-Method” (that I had been told for years was THE way to make a DIY job look good) has made a paradigm shift in my results and my enjoyment! Tomorrow is sanding and second coat. I would normally be looking for an excuse to “let the paint cure a little longer.” As it stands, I can’t get to sleep and I’m fighting the urge to go check my room again! Your videos, tips, expert advice that is easy to understand and follow, have been a game changer! God bless you, Guy!!!

@@ELthatsLoreel Like anything, you get better with practice. Tape drove me crazy. It caused me more problems by ripping off paint when I ripped it off, or as others said, paint bled through in parts anyway. When I make a mistake, I just wipe it off with a wet sponge or cloth and do it again. I also will sometimes use an old credit card and hold it perpendicular to the wall instead of taping, and move it along as I paint. (I only do this if a particular area is causing me trouble. ) You cannot rush this or do too much in one day or you get sloppy and tired. You can also hold the bristles and paint down first, then across to remove those downward brush strokes.

I was so shocked at the price, respecting the professional work of a painter though at the same time. I watched this video and even though I have painted myself for years and years, I thought the time had come to ask someone else to do it. I am not young and the task was going to be daunting to say the least. I began last week in the hall. I cannot tell you how this video has changed my feelings about painting. I have never used a pole and that's why I hated the thought of re-painting any room. Well, what a transformation!!!!!! I cannot honestly believe how easy it was to do. I followed all your instructions and did it slowly and calmly. I am so impressed with you and myself! Thank you so very much for doing these videos. I bought a good quality paint and roller and didn't use any tape. The paint glided on like cream. I have now moved on to paint part of the lounge and the kitchen. Little by little it will all be done. 😄 Don't know if I can do the ceilings though!!

I'm a newly minted retired nurse too. Congratulations on your career and enjoy your renovations. I am currently repainting all the interior walls of my house and followed this fellow's video to a tee and was disappointed in the finish. I chose a Velvet paint over an eggshell, so im not sure if this made a difference. My walls had a "stripey" finish which was especially noticeable on the walls with the most sun exposure I.e. my whole living room. My elderly father was a contractor and according to him, has painted thousands of walls and I should have asked him for his tips and tricks first, but I turned to youtube and this video and i noticed your "nurse" comment at that time. I've re-done my paint job with my Dad's advice and I'm so happy with the results. ( I had to completely and thoroughly sand and prime the walls as the stripey finish would have haunted every layer of paint) The only tips I'm keeping from this video are how to cut in the ceiling and around the trim. I didn't need to tape off anything and only had to wipe up a couple of spots where I goofed and got a little paint on the trim. My Dad's advice: Wash, patch and sand areas if needed. Put a light coat of primer over the spackled areas. Lightly sand the walls with ~150 grit sandpaper and wipe down with a clean microfiber mop head. Prime the walls with primer ...very important step and don't skip it according to my Dad Lightly Sand between all coats of paint with 180 to 220 grit paper and wipe away the dust again with the clean microfiber mop. I know this fellow in the video says wiping after sanding not needed ever but why get dust and such stuck in your paint finish. Divide the wall length horizontally in 3 sections and about 4 feet vertically. Apply paint with a 6mm to 10 mm roller ( the video says 18 mm but this gives a thick heavy textured look that i didnt like and the smaller pile roller gives a smoother finish) In the ~3x4 foot sections going from the ceiling to the floor, Apply the paint in a M then roll over this M horizontally in a zip zag motion Do this to the other 2 sections below your first section. Once all three areas are done now lightly roll in one direction from the ceiling to the floor covering your last roller mark a few inches. Work quickly. Now start on the next 4 foot piece of wall and repeat. Honestly, I actually used less paint with this technique and the painting of the wall went quicker then the video's techniques and best of all...No stripes in the finish! Hope this unsolicited advice helps you avoid the costly time and money mistakes I made this week. Best of luck in your retirement and your painting. 💗

In particular the 360 degree sander, magnetic paint brush pots, sanding between coats and most of all first time I’ve used the extender poll for the roller [I forgot to buy the stand which I’ll do next time] which was a game changer for me ! Also, after the first coat / edging cutting in I did a wall at a time so for the second coat, edging one wall then rollering it which gave excellent results. We think it’s the best paint job we’ve ever done plus we saved $1,800 in labour costs. Thanks again Cheers Declan - Brisbane, Australia.

I wiped all my walls before I painted them by I didn’t think to sand them. They have two coats but I have plenty of extra paint would it be worthwhile to slightly sand it by hand and do one more coat? It’s my finished basement and it looks fine there’s some grip but you have to get up really close to see it. Also I have a 5 gallon bucket so it was hard to precisely pour only what I needed. So I’ve had the excess pain sitting in the roller contained under a plastic bag and little chunks started to dry. What should I do get rid of it?

If you sand the wall before painting or in between, turn off the air conditioning. Fans etc also off. Wait an hour before you start sanding the wall so that the dust does not fly in the air. So I just painted my room, following the video. A couple of obervations: - Clean the dust off the wall after sanding - USE PRIMER (i'm not sure if this is how its called). This layer of primer will make your paint stick and will allow the paint to be spread evenly. Otherwise its all gonna be a disaster. - Stir up the paint with a stick before pouring - Use good tools

Some paints don’t require primer or have primer in them. I just painted my new home in sherwin Williams emerald satin. No primer but applied two coats over the cheap flat white the builder used. I sanded and patched holes and other stuff. And the paint job came out beautifully. The most important part is rolling in the same direction and backrolling to even out the paint eliminate roller lines. The final job is beautiful, No lap lines nothing it looks professional. The only thing I’d add is to backroll the cut ins with a roller while the paint is still wet to change the texture and minimize brush lines.

One of the things that I have seen contractors do that makes finishes in new homes look amazing, is the painters went around and used a latex caulk at every joint in the baseboard and moulding and window casings. They then spray a primer on everything, then tape off all the trim and apply the finish coat and then paint the trim. The result makes it look like the mouldins and trim work is formed right into the wall and gives look of extreme quality. It is a small thing that has a very good result. Well worth the additional, yet minimal, extra effort.

@JBtacoma
@JBtacoma 2 жыл бұрын
I dont recommend an amateur painting a 40 foot tall foyer themselves, but if you absolutely want to then... Yes, push broom from top to bottom to knock loose dust remaining off, 180 or 220 but very light sanding. No need to put much pressure on the wall. Do ceiling first if you're painting that as well then work top to bottom on the walls, one at a time. When putting the ladder on the walls make sure your first coat is completely dry before you move to the second coat. Also, invest in some foam ladder caps for the top of the ladder and wrap them with clean soft rags to keep them from marking the first coat. Foyers are no joke, and can be tricky moving a ladder around in so be very careful.

I appreciate the tips you gave in this video, I used them to do the second coat of paint in my new apartment and the experience went from shoddy and tiresome to efficient and rather fun.

This video came at the perfect time. I used this and your ceiling painting video to repaint my living room/dining/kitchen this week and it looks SO GOOD. Thanks for making painting easier and way less intimidating!

One of my favorite tools for cleaning dust/webs from walls, windows, cabinets is the Webster on a long pole. You can do an entire house in an hour. Mechanical advantage with that long pole.

Great video. One thing I was surprised by is that there's no cleaning needed after sanding. Doesn't sanding dust cling to the wall and then affect the finish of the paint when it's rolled onto it?

Yes, it does. I also found that odd.

My question too!! Cleaning walls - assuming that’s not needed if sanding but there has to be some kind of wipe with a moist cloth after sanding…??

That was going to be my question also. I haven’t read all the comments so perhaps I’ll find the answer below.

I came here to ask this as well. In all the painting videos I haven't seen him clean after sanding, but maybe that's being done off camera? I just would love to see that addressed, and if I'm missing something.

They have microfiber dust catchers that can fit on top of that sanding disc that he's using in this video. You just wipe the walls down with it the same way they were sanded. The only dust left is that which isn't on the walls.

We love everything you do! An update on our painting adventures. We purchased everything you said and followed your instructions and discovered a paint brush is an instrument. I’m the right hands it will produce beautiful music. In the wrong hands , all the notes hurt your ears. When we attempted to paint a black wall next to a white one…. We had to go get tape. I am sure with enough practice we would be able to do what you showed. However we only had 4 times to practice. Lol. Thanks for all the info.

Don't feel bad about that. I paint for a living and I use tape sometimes too. You will find that some corners are really easy to paint a straight line next to and others are really difficult. There's nothing wrong with using tape when the brush alone isn't working.
