When I first started using the I Joists, in 1977, I was framing in Nebraska. They came on a railroad car @ 100 ft. and after we got them to the site, we cut them down to 60 ft. Great video!

OK, Your back and forth on the word leisure, gave me a flash back to high school english class. First day the teacher give the class a spelling test, he says, "Neither financier see either species of weird leisure." Had to write each word you got wrong 10 time. Stop giving me flash backs.🤣🤣

Timmy!!! Your saw blade is offset 1.5” from the edge of the table. You could’ve just wiggled the rim material youre standing on back a bit and used your saw and cut from the other side off your initial lines. Haha. Just being an goober. I’d have done the same thing. Hope to see you at a DMB show one day

I am electrician in Netherlands, l am involved in building wood skeleton houses often. We have different building codes here. But my employer likes to see your channel. Many products you use are not available here or we use different to code here. Please add metric on your videos. Keep up the good work 💪

21:50 the joists are resting on the pony wall, but if the pony wall is not level, the snapline transfers some of the belly/bow of the pony wall into a slightly inaccurate line. I think the major component keeping the rim proper and plumb here is that the rim itself is well cut and balanced, and that just sighting down the line lets you know if too much is out of sorts.

I also trim my joists this way. Shorter spans don't work as well in my experience. When the joist is lifted to finish the cut, the top cord at the opposite end pushes off the beam and this is amplified as the span decreases. Locking hangers can hold the new gap against the beam and it can be tricky to bonk the joists tight again. 14' is the minimum span I'll use this technique. These guys are great.

14:52 - Dumb question but I'm just a DIY'er. How are you holding and sighting the saw to get a straight cut? If *I* were to cut like that, it'd be a mess... Is there a pro tip here?
@jeremymdgt
@jeremymdgt Жыл бұрын
You can see a right angle referencing the length of the piece and your saw's table. It's a muscle but you can definitely train it. Listen to the sound of the blade and feel it. Straight is the easiest push, blades spin straight.
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers Жыл бұрын
not a dumb question at all. You learn to sight through the top mark and keep the saw base square to the material.

Very efficient I've told guys over and over you don't have to draw your square line all the way through the material start your cut and listen to your blade the path of least resistance and your straight and square always enjoy your videos

I'm building my first house with these and the plans don't call for any kind of band board other than the structural ply board. This boggles my mind. I can't, in any way see how it's a good idea. All of the weight is sitting on it since that's were the walls are going. If someone could explain it maybe I'd understand but it definitely doesn't make sense.
@AwesomeFramers

You should have your plans sent through your lumberyard to the I Joist suppliers. they will draw a lay out correctly. You MUST have rim with I Joists
@davegordon6943
@davegordon6943 Жыл бұрын
@@AwesomeFramers that's what I thought. It makes zero sense. It's 1 1/8 thick but still. Nowhere to nail the bottom plate of the floor above, no lateral strength. Lots of reasons why it's wrong. Looks like you used 2x12 for your bands. Do you ever use the structural ply board?
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers Жыл бұрын
@@davegordon6943 this layout called for 1.25" LVL for rim. It's an engineered system, the rim being deliberately taller than the I Joist to carry the wall loads

Cleanup? Instead of throwing all the pieces in the hole, why not throw all the pieces into one pile? Now you have to pick the pieces up a second time. You could have easily picked an carried all the pieces to the bin instead of throwing them in the hole.
