I did as instructed, and have success. Thank you! I was concerned in my humid climate that I would rot my cactus by using soil and water. 2 months and I have roots trying to bust out of the base. Great advice!

Great idea to grow these dry in a glass Lyn! This probably would have helped me save a couple of clippings a friend gave me in December. The ended up rotting because I put them in dirt during the winter season. I will def try this method in the future!

Opuntia are native here in south Texas. The best (only?) way to root an opuntia cutting is to simply leave one of the pads lying around. It will eventually put out roots, and then, buds for new pads. This also happens in nature all the time. When you see a big wild opuntia, there are usually smaller plants next to it that have taken root from pads that broke off the big plant and fell to the ground.

On Christmas Eve I found broken piece of a cactus that I've admired on my daily dog walk, especially when it flowers it has very large white flowers. Through your help and others in the KZbin cactus community I now know it's species and how to save it and make it grow as it's now January 2019 I now also know to get this Cereus Peruvianus indoors as I've had it on a table callusing over as it is two feet tall and about ten inches thick. I'm going to try the air rooting you've just explained but I'm going to have to use a large pickle jar for a glass container and wrap the base with enough burlap to hold it off the bottom. Thanks for your informative videos ! 🌵 Oops p.s. I forgot to tell you I'm in southern California and it's been in the 30 degrees at night. 🏜️

Excellent method. I'm trying it now. However I have one question how much sunlight should the san pedro cuttings be getting when they are rootless? I purchased some 12" san pedro cuttings in early November and still no roots!! Should they be under the lights or receiving sunlight or in the shade? They look very healthy dark green just like my others I just don't want to injury them before they get a chance to root. Please help!

Desert Plants of Avalon I am trying air propagation with cereus repandus (Peruvian Apple) but none of the cactus have rooted after 3 weeks. I have done the cuttings straight from a cactus so the bottom bit is very small and pointy. Spring has just started and the temperature is a bit warmer. How do you suggest I make the cactus root? Should I cut the bottom so there is a larger flat surface area?

@@thunderbirdice Hi it sounds like you have cut the cutting perfect, and air propagation works well with Cereus cacti, the roots will come out from the middle of the core of the cactus, as well as from the areoles around the cactus, it will take longer than 3 weeks to root though, and usually takes at least 6 weeks to 2 months are often longer even in Spring and Summer, :-D good luck with rooting and happy growing to you XXXX

i got in trouble in a dorm in college for rooting one of my 20+ orchids, succulents, trees, peppers, cacti, herbs in a shot glass (alcohol) because i ran out of plant pots. that case was a seedum adolphii firestorm cutting which is doing swell; however, its neat to see someone else doing the plant rooting in a glass method. also 3:42 reminds me of my shower plants since i usually brush teeth in the shower plus i had to pause to ask what is the orange/pink and green plant just right of center in the video? ... gotta describe the shower plants... the the Ionantha is putting off a baby i think because i accidentally left water in the center to rot it and i changed its display angle with tips pointing the ground 3 months ago. an aloe also grows in the shower window which is growing a new leaf each month or so. I cant wait to get a columnar cactus or two since all of mine are low growers and i'd like some taller than myself, like you have. i do have an oak tree and a lime tree which will do that but there's something about cactii I like bunches :) im over six foot tall so I better get growing those slow growers soon anywho your videos are super fun and your enthusiasm is a delight

If you have access to a plant that is still growing in soil, study the way the spines face and you'll be able to determine top versus bottom, if you can't you can lay it on its side and they will root and send up multiple Sprouts like that also

hello, i think i have an armed Cereus (have had that one almost all my life, over 20 years now). its about 50cm tall now, at the top its about 5-6 cm in width, but the bottom is half that width at best and is getting dark brown. how should i treat my cactus before it just snaps in half or falls over? :/

Do you think this would work well with me echinopsis lagenformis, or trichocereus bridgesii. Also is it important that the towel be tight or loose to the cactus skin. As you may know trichocereus bridgesii has long spines so i snipped off the spines and then wrapped it with a good bit of paper but i doubt there would be much air flow especially because the plant has pretty shallow indents between each rib

When I take cuttings of any cactus, I air-dry them for at least one week per inch diameter of the cut surface. For columnar varieties, I immediately hang them vertically with twine in a bright, warm windowsill. Most of the time they will start to form root initials while hanging, and really take off when they’re planted.

The glass jar rooting method is great for other types of plants as well, such a pineapple. Peel several bottom leaves from the pineapple ‘cutting’ until you have about 15 mm of bare stem, then sit it in the mouth of a jar. Add water, but keep the level about an inch below the stem. It will send roots out into the humid air inside the jar. No rot!

Thank you for the comments! I've seen the video before, but I watched it again just to be certain ; ). I find it a bit hard to see if the old man cactus is drying out, because it has all these white spines covering the cactus. That's why I thought maybe Lynn has a tip, because I saw in a video that she also has old man in her collection. Do you just give it a try or does it give you other signs? My big old cactus has begun to rot completely and I barely managed to cut some parts still green and alive today...still confused on what I should do right now! Hi there :-D yes you definitely need to wait after cutting it even from the main one, its important that you wait a few weeks until the cut part has completely callused over and formed a white skin before planting it up into soil and treating as a cutting, you dont need to water the cutting at all. You can rest the Domino cactus ( Echinopsis ) on top of a empty pot to allow the roots to form but you can still go ahead and plant it up as a cutting after a few weeks or when the cutting has totally formed a white hard skin from the cut, and then plant up and treat as a cutting, Good luck with your cutting XXXXX

@@IosifStalinsendsyoutoGulag Hi :-D I would keep it a little bit away from the window so it gets indirect sunshine and not full sun but bright enough so it gets very bright light, just until it forms a callus, once it has callused because your cactus is a globular one you can plant it directly into well draining cactus soil and then treat a a cutting, do not water but lightly mist the top surface of the soil only, and when you do only just enough to dampen the very fine top surface to help encourage rooting, but keep totally dry over the Winter as the cutting will still send out roots without watering, and then in Spring your plant should have re rooted itself and you can then resume watering as normal :-D Good luck with your Cactus and happy growing to you XXXXX

Hi Gustavo :-D yes these cacti will still re root in winter although at a much slower pace than Summer due to the lower available light at this time of year, You are so lucky living in Arizona and if you can keep your cactus cutting on a sunny windowsill it will help it to root faster, but dont worry if you dont see roots as its normal at this time of year, it may not decide to start rooting until the spring now, but it should root once the longer days start to come back from Feb onwards :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXXX

Hi there, they can take up to nine months or longer to root, but if you keep them in a bright well lit position they will root in time, patience is the key,it took about 3 months for some of our cereus cuttings to root this way. but it took almost 10 months to root our other Cereus cuttings but they rooted in the end, Good luck with rooting them and thanks so much for your comment and for watching and have a wonderful Friday XXXX

Patience is key, it can take months for some columnar cactus to root. The most critical part of rooting cactus is to make sure that the base of the cutting is fully healed or callused. I allow a week per inch of diameter of the actual cut surface. It doesn’t hurt to wait longer, a healthy cutting can live over a year with no roots. The method in the video is superior because it exposes the base of the cactus to slightly more humid and “comfortable” conditions which really encourages roots, but not rot. Coir is a popular rooting medium, but the base of the cactus is hidden, and monitoring moisture levels is tricky. Also, you’ll be lifting the plant every week or so to see if it has rooted. I simply hang my cuttings in a warm, bright windowsill using twine, and they root just hanging there. (Not nice roots like the video shows, just little 2mm to 4 mm nubs) The hanging method is very useful if you receive cuttings in the late fall or winter months.

Your name makes me think you are from a humid country. It might not work well in high humidity.

I did this in Ohio where it is humid, and after 2 months, I have roots starting.
