Potting up some cactus cuttings from ebay! These are the Cereus peruvianus, or night blooming cactus, apple cactus, night blooming apple cactus, as well as the myrtillocactus geotmetrizans. The cereus was sold to me as a San Pedro Cactus, but after closley looking at it, i can tell it is not. I messaged the seller from ebay and they told me it was marked incorrectly and gave me the proper name which confirmed my i.d of the plant. I used a cactus blend potting mix made by miracle grow and amended the soil with fertilome orchid mix and perlite. Then I put a tiny amount of tomato fertilizer in the top of the soil just to give the new roots some calcium.

Get you a bag of decent soil, then get a bag of perlite, a bag of patio sand, then get a bucket full of little rocks. Mix them all together, *being very heavy with the sand, rocks and perlite,* then use it in your cacti pots. It allows water to flow through easily and dries quickly!! You don't ever want your soil to get wet and hold the moisture... it's a death sentence. Wierd how plants so tough will die so easy from water.

Thank you for this video!! About a week ago I bought three cactus cuttings. After watching, I’m now concerned about potting, as I do not want them to rot. Even thought they’d be inside, it’s pretty cold now in Georgia. Should I just put them in a pot with a little bit of soil? I can’t imagine they’d live until the spring without anything...right?? I have the same cuttings as the one you were calling San Pedros.

I was wondering what you thought of using bone meal instead of the tomato fertilizer for your cactus? Jobe’s has a 2-14-0 bone meal fertilizer (meant for vegetables, tubers, flowers and bulbs) with 15% calcium, but it lacks any sulfur. I’m still learning and have been relying on a highly diluted indoor plant food for cacti up until now. I’ve had to repot my Peruvian apple cactus a little late this season after it clocked in at growing nearly a foot a month since May and began to crowd it’s nursery pot. Thanks!

Hello thank you for the video. I have two Mexican fence post cuttings that I am letting dry out for about a week and then when I put them into some soil do I water them at all or no? Some people say to moisten the soil every now and then and some people say to not water at all so I’m confused plz help :)

We had torrential rains (for so cal anyway) over the winter and yet my cactus IN the plain straight miracle grow cactus mix (identical to the bag you had) ALL did wonderful ....not sure what the heck you even mean or know re that....my own experience has been to NOT have my cacti in all day long blaring sun ...my cacti are in partial shade and are growing like fricken WEEDS! Go figure right? Many started off as cuttings I stuck in a box for months....they were so dehydrated but just exploded to life when finally potted.....mostly it was the PC clone pachanoi ....my Bridgesii and Peruvian I grew from tiny imported little bare root seedlings ....I don't even know which is which but I am trying to decide if I should cut and replant cuttings hoping the cut bases will pup?? Anyone know? I would be so bummed if I hurt one after three years of nursing them from bare root babies

I prefer sand or gravel, partially because it also looks a lot better. However this guy was pretty heavy and I didn't think sand or gravel would quite do the trick unless I used a ton of it.

The heavy rains do make it tricky with a lot of cactus and succulents! Yes, a very fast draining potting mix, that dries out quickly would probably help with that. I have also seen people make tiny umbrella like covers for theirs, and it seems to work well for them.

Could I mix in some small lava rocks to my Miracle-Gro cactus soil (same stuff you're using here). Would this help it drain better? I found a very rotted out cactus on the street, so I cut the top off using a sterile knife. I then dipped the cut end into cinnamon as was recommended in another video, I will now allow it to sit and callus for a couple weeks before repotting. Also I did not cut it at an angle because I did not learn this was recommended until after I had already cut it, will this be a problem?

No, it will be just fine. Did you see the cinnamon trick from Ana at Cactus Caffiene, by chance? Lol! But yes, mix in lava rocks for sure!! I typically use little pebbles, but lava rocks are fine. I get a decent bag of soil, a bag of perlite, a bag of patio sand, and rocks (lava rock, In your case). I then dump them all in a bucket, being HEAVY with sand and perlite and rock.

I have a 14" cactus similar to the one you planted with the roots. It is much spikier and I usually use tongs to transplant it to avoid all the needles. How would I find out the name of it? I live in Ontario Canada and I usually put it and my barrel cactus outside in the summer in the sun and they seem to love it. They even seem to grow during the summer. They get rained on when it rains and they don't appear to rot.

Cut above the rot, let it dry back out completely. Make sure your soil is very airy and dry. Don't water until well after it starts rooting.

rally is best to use a soil made for cactus and succulents. Regular potting mixes tend to hold onto moisture, which can cause the cactus to rot. Just makes growing them easier to not have to worry about moisture retention. But, you can add perlite, gravel and sand to most potting soils to improve drainage and they will work well.

don tuse any kind with fertilizer pre added. its best to add your own good sh## you need to remove any pieces of wood, leaves anything like that that will decompose into nitrogen. they dont like it! For fertillizer i recomend usIng the brand Liquid Dirt from Utah. its expensive but you will neveR want to use anything else after you see how good it works...its truly pretty amazing, youll notice new growth so quickly !
